MS staff

There was a pilot flying a small single engine charter plane, with a couple of very important executives on board. He was coming into Seattle airport through thick fog with less than 10m visibility when his instruments went out. So he began circling around looking for landmark. After an hour or so, he starts running pretty low on fuel and the passengers are getting very nervous. Finally, a small opening in the fog appears and he sees a tall building with one guy working alone on the fifth floor. The pilot banks the plane around, rolls down the window and shouts to the guy "Hey! Where am I?" To this, the solitary office worker replies "You're in a plane." The pilot rolls up the window, executes a 275 degree turn and proceeds to execute a perfect blind landing on the runway of the airport 5 miles away. Just as the plane stops, so does the engine as the fuel has run out.

The passengers are amazed and one asks how he did it. "Simple" replies the pilot, "I asked the guy in that building a simple question. The answer he gave me was 100 percent correct but absolutely useless, therefore that must be Microsoft's support office and from there the airport is just a while away."

Is Windows a virus?

No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:
They replicate quickly Okay, Windows does that

Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so okay, Windows does that

Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk Okay, Windows does that, too

Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems Sigh... Windows does that, too

Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware Yup, that's with Windows, too

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature

So, Windows is *not* a virus

SELLING TIME

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 11:07 AM PDT

He may not have confirmed anything about the Independence Day sequel, but Will Smith is attached to star in another upcoming sci-fi thriller, Selling Time. The story will center around a man, presumably Smith's character, who is offered the chance to relive and potentially change the worst day of his life in exchange for seven years off his life expectancy. The film doesn't have a director on board yet, although several big names are reportedly interested. The film has had a rocky history, and has been in pre-production for years now, with Spike Lee attached to direct at one point, and Smith even signing on and later dropping out due to schedule conflicts.
The plot of Selling Time seems like it could result in either an exciting original film or one that's a retread of Seven Pounds set in a sci-fi universe. Unfortunately, the film's inability to hold onto a star or director doesn't bode well, which is a shame because Smith really needs a hit film. Despite being one of the most famous and well-liked movie stars in the world, Smith has found himself on a losing streak in recent years, and his films have stopped making the money they once did. His latest attempt at both a big-budget action film and a sci-fi thriller was After Earth, which was a critical and financial flop, and its failure is sure to make audiences skeptical about Smith starring in a similar project.

TP-Link wireless router with MTNL issue

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 10:34 AM PDT

Hi,

I have an existing wired MTNL modem and internet is working fine using that.

I bought a TP-Link wireless router (Router No. : TD-W8151N) and trying to set up the wifi at my home .

Issue :

Internet is not working on connecting the ADSL cable (from telephone line to router) and ethernet cable(from router to laptop).

Status of lights on the router :

Power : Solid light

ADSL : Solid light

WLAN : Flashing

LAN : Flashing ( In the booklet its written that it should be a solid light if corresponding port is connected to the laptop but this is not happening)

P.S. When am connecting the ADSL and ethernet cable with my existing modem its working fine.

Also am able to open the routers default webpage i.e. 192.168.1.1 but I think I should proceed with this setup once I have the normal wired internet working.

Any help with this?

My Email To BSNL (Got A Response! Need Your Help!)

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 10:22 AM PDT

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking on this forum for a very long time now and I finally made a throw away account to pass on an important message to the community.

Recently, after having gotten really frustrated with the entire FUP/pseudo-high-speed-broadband thing (and the lack of meaningful alternatives here in Chennai), I looked up all the email IDs of BSNL managers and sent them an email requesting a single thing - offer us a 1Mbps no-FUP plan around the Rs. 1000 mark.

Now, in the email, I said that a lot of people were very frustrated with the status quo and that a lot of people are actually demanding something like this. This evening I received a small reply stating -

Respected Sr.Officers

Kindly see the trailing customer mail. Forwarded for your kind attention and to take-up with Corporate office if required, please.

The customer mail-id is : <redacted>

----------------------------------------------------------

Now I think it would mean something if everyone here could also mail these folks asking for the 1Mbps thing. If they see enough support they just might do it!

I've pasted the text of the mail I sent, below -

My name is <redacted> and I am a resident of Chennai who has been using BSNL's broadband services for many years now. I have been using your broadband services since as early as 2004. For as long as I can remember now, my internet's average speed has been somewhere in the region of 512 Kbps (Kilo BITS per second). Yes, BSNL does offer "high speed" plans but these are crippled since BSNL implements a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) with caps set at data amounts as low as 8GB. In today's world there is not much you can do with 8GB at ~1Mbps (1 Mega BIT(s) per second).

I am an ardent gamer and I love watching videos on youtube and I skype a lot. With the kind of plans you have, I can do none of these. For example, I regularly connect to servers in Europe and the kind of latency your network provides (~300 ms ping on average), a lot of what I try to do (play games) actually just fails most of the time. Maybe for people like you, games might be for kids but for me it is actually a very serious pursuit. And for people like me, the kind of service BSNL provides is inadequate. Given the lack of private players in the industry with reasonable plans, I am forced to stick with BSNL.

I would be really, really happy if BSNL launches a simple broadband plan at Rs.1100 which offers a 1Mbps (1 Mega BIT(s) per second) plan with NO Fair Usage Policy (FUP). What this means is that you don't throttle down the 1Mbps speed down to something absolutely meaningless like 256Kbps (Kilo BITS per second) once you cross some threshold like 10GB. This is a demand a lot of people from the metros have been making for  a very long time now. The internet won't wait for India. In today's situation your connection speeds are barely enough to load images. If you don't believe me, you can try this for yourself. Go to imgur (a popular image hosting site) and try to load the images there from some random BSNL connection at an average household. You'll realize what a huge pain it is waiting for images to load because it is a 256Kbps connection. Of late, with rapid updates to email services (read Gmail and Yahoo!) it has become near impossible to login to check emails too. Point in case being the fact that Yahoo mail takes a ridiculous amount of time to log in if you're on a connection that's slower that 1Mbps. The simple truth is that this is not an issue about "Indians don't have much to do on the internet" but that the content (because of quality upscaling) on the internet has grown in volume. So while a 8GB FUP cap might have made sense way back in 2007, it is absolutely meaningless in today's context.

If you don't trust what I say, please visit this popular Indian broadband related forum named India Broadband Forum. Look at the kind of opinion people have about BSNL's service.

I sincerely hope that someone or the other reading this email pays heed to it and takes PROMPT positive actions regarding what I have said. I wish my dream of a decent internet connection comes true. Yes, India has a lot of people who have never even seen computers but that doesn't mean those who have computer access shouldn't have decent access to the internet.

I have no intent of offending or slighting anybody. I have written such a blunt mail in hopes that it will carry across the chagrin I experience on a daily basis.

Kind regards,

<redacted>
-----------------------------------------------------

Please help! I think it's time we tried something.

BTW, this is not spam.

I made a throwaway because I don't want to sign up on the forum. But I am a regular visitor here though. : )

Hello Chromaniac, iChaitanya (I hope I spelled that right) and the others who keep this place alive.

South Africa penalised for ball tampering

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 10:22 AM PDT

http://www.espncricinfo.com/pakistan-v-south-africa-2013-14/content/current/story/682501.html

South Africa were penalised five runs for ball tampering and the team was the subject of a hearing after play on the third day of the second Test against Pakistan in Dubai.

The ICC confirmed that the penalty and the change of ball after 30 overs was due to ball tampering. "As per 42.1 of the ICC playing conditions, the umpires replaced the ball and fined South Africa team five penalty runs for ball tampering," an ICC spokesperson said.

The incident took place at the start of the 31st over of Pakistan's innings, two overs after tea, when umpires Ian Gould and Rod Tucker called South African captain Graeme Smith for a chat. The fourth umpire, Shozab Raza, brought a box of balls onto the field and a new one was selected for use.

Cancel old service complaint

Posted: 25 Oct 2013 09:54 AM PDT

on 31 august, my broadband was not working so I filed a complaint on selfcare portal, which had this status "Assigned to DE", but I was never contacted by anyone from bsnl and my internet just started working the next day, so I didn't bothered to look at it again...

now today my landline as well as broadband is not working again. When i tried to file a complaint on selfcare, it showed me that i can't log another complaint until my previous one is resolved, which still had the same status as it was almost 50 days ago..

so, is there any way that i can just cancel my old complaint and file a new one???

I really wanna avoid going to the bsnl office to file a complaint coz according to my past experiencewith them, each and every person there is a typical government employee(lazy, ignorant and complete as**oles)
