The highest download speed you ever reached

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 11:47 AM PDT

Once at a friend's place (hostel) there was an unsecured wifi network, and I downloaded at almost 1MBps. I would often go to his place to download. But, after 1-2 months the network became secured and so it was the end of delight. So, anyways what is the highest download speed you have ever got?

MS staff

There was a pilot flying a small single engine charter plane, with a couple of very important executives on board. He was coming into Seattle airport through thick fog with less than 10m visibility when his instruments went out. So he began circling around looking for landmark. After an hour or so, he starts running pretty low on fuel and the passengers are getting very nervous. Finally, a small opening in the fog appears and he sees a tall building with one guy working alone on the fifth floor. The pilot banks the plane around, rolls down the window and shouts to the guy "Hey! Where am I?" To this, the solitary office worker replies "You're in a plane." The pilot rolls up the window, executes a 275 degree turn and proceeds to execute a perfect blind landing on the runway of the airport 5 miles away. Just as the plane stops, so does the engine as the fuel has run out.

The passengers are amazed and one asks how he did it. "Simple" replies the pilot, "I asked the guy in that building a simple question. The answer he gave me was 100 percent correct but absolutely useless, therefore that must be Microsoft's support office and from there the airport is just a while away."

Is Windows a virus?

No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:
They replicate quickly Okay, Windows does that

Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so okay, Windows does that

Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk Okay, Windows does that, too

Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems Sigh... Windows does that, too

Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware Yup, that's with Windows, too

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature

So, Windows is *not* a virus

Frequent Disconnection / ADSL blinking Issue on MTNL Broadband

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 10:57 AM PDT

Hi,

I am a user of 849NU plan of MTNL Triband service since August based out of Navi Mumbai.

All of August, i was very happy to have a lovely connection and good speeds, with a pretty good tariff.
But now since the past 15 days I am suffering from very intermittent net connection.
Although I am connected to the internet, sometimes the webpages take ages to open, and never open, while at other times it opens instantly. Also downloading has the same pattern, sometimes I get very good speeds of upto 200 Kbps, while other times there is no download. Although all download sites show good Triband Speed, but it is the intermittent connection that is the problem.
This problem has crept up in the last 15 odd days, and I have tried everything but no change has been noticed.

Has anyone else faced a similar problem, and if yes, whats the work around. The people at MTNL classify this as a slow connection problem, but that is exactly not the issue, as I do get good speeds intermittently.

Somebody please help me.

Minimum internet plan required, only for video calls and some browsing.

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 10:56 AM PDT

Hello friends,

One of my neighbors is looking for an internet plan. They are an elderly couple, recently their son from abroad sent them a tab that has only wifi connection, so that they can have video calls with them when needed. They dont have any pc or laptop. My guess is its the first time they would be using internet.

Since I use spectranet and its quite good at my place i suggested them the same, where as their friends and relatives gave them other suggestions. They are yet to make a decision.

So my question is, in terms of speed what is the minimun speed plan required to make video calls over skype and how much data one would consume over calls with little browsing in a month? I need to know so that I can suggest them a limited plan that is economical as well.

Thanks!

Why this thread?

So often, we have some random thought or point to make/discuss , and I personally sometimes skip it as I feel it is not worthy of a new thread & feel its unfair to hijack an existing thread...

Would recommend creating new thread for any big news & as usual we have threads for specific series/tournaments.. This is for something general random posts related to cricket...Kind of the Cricket Offtopic thread...

Will start with one post

Airtel called me today and said since I'd taken Smartbytes for 12gb last month, they wanted to offer 125 fup plan(80gb now) at the same speed(8mbps) for 50rs extra.

I also heard they are giving 3g at 2g rates in my area these days.

Rush (Hollywood)

Release Date: September 20, 2013
Studio: Universal Pictures
Director: Ron Howard
Screenwriter: Peter Morgan
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brьhl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara, Stephen Mangan, Christian McKay, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Jamie de Courcey, Pierfrancesco Favino, Natalie Dormer
Genre: Action, Drama
MPAA Rating: R (for sexual content, nudity, language, some disturbing images and brief drug use)

Plot Summary:
Two-time Academy Award® winner Ron Howard ("A Beautiful Mind," "Frost/Nixon"), teams once again with fellow two-time Academy Award® nominee, writer Peter Morgan ("Frost/Nixon," "The Queen"), on "Rush," a spectacular big-screen re-creation of the merciless 1970s rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda.

The epic action-drama stars Chris Hemsworth ("The Avengers") as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Daniel Brьhl ("Inglourious Basterds") as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives.

Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed—handsome English playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda. Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, Rush follows the two drivers as they push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. If you make one mistake, you die.

Also starring Olivia Wilde ("TRON: Legacy") and Alexandra Maria Lara ("The Reader"), "Rush" is produced by Andrew Eaton ("A Mighty Heart"), Howard, Academy Award® winner Brian Grazer ("Apollo 13," "A Beautiful Mind"), Eric Fellner ("Senna," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy"), Morgan and Brian Oliver ("Black Swan") and executive produced by Cross Creek Pictures, Exclusive Media, Todd Hallowell and Tim Bevan. Universal Pictures will distribute the film in North America.

Windows 8.1 (Windows Blue) Updates

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 09:01 AM PDT

What to Expect (And What We Want) From Windows Blue

More tile sizes: If Windows Phone can support three tile sizes (small, medium and large), then Windows 8 should absolutely support them, too. The tiles are much larger on Windows 8, so smaller sizes would be easy to tap with a fat finger. It will also make for a more personalized Start Screen, which the Windows 8 Modern UI is all about.

Updated Mail: The Windows 8 Mail app needs some extra power. Simplicity is great, but some basic additions would help it be a more useful tool. Microsoft should add support for POP3 accounts and incorporate features available in Outlook.com like drag and drop. A report from ZDNet suggests that this might come prior to the Windows Blue update.

Ability to use multiple browsers in Modern UI: This is a small request, but it addresses what can become a major annoyance in Windows 8 if you ever use more than one browser. Right now, even if a browser is available as a Windows 8 app, it will only work in the Modern UI environment if it is set as your default browser. If it's not your default browser, then it will open in the desktop. That goes for the built-in IE10 browser and other offerings like Google Chrome.

Boot to desktop: This is one of the most common Windows 8 demands, especially for business users. It should definitely be an option for Windows 8 Pro users, who do most of their work in the desktop environment. It's thoughtful and will make a large number of users happy without much work. But it should absolutely not be an option for Windows RT, where the opposite should be true.

Make it possible to manage everything in Modern UI: Alternatively, if you want to stay in the Modern UI 100 percent of the time, Microsoft should let you stay there 100 percent of the time. Especially since the Modern UI is the future of Windows. Microsoft should have the Task Manager, Windows Explorer and Control Panel available as Modern UI apps. You should be able to change your screen resolution and manage your files without being forced to the desktop.

Pathetic technical Support from Bharti - Airtel

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 07:50 AM PDT

I'm finally writing to explain how frustrated I'm with the technical support provided by India's leading DSL provider Bharti - Airtel. I originally started having problems with my DSL on 14th September 2013 (Saturday) that the DSL light started blinking (It usually stays on) and I could not browse the internet, Called the customer service and got an interaction ID 38556828, I was so happy to get a callback from the technician with next 3 hours. I was not at home that time but let him in to work on the problem. He called me back in 15 - 20 minutes to inform that the link seems to be down and he would get it checked from the backend and let me know. He did not answer the same day and the next day. On Monday the 16th Sep when I called the customer service I was surprised to hear that the ticket was closed without the resolution on which I suggested to get it re-opened which no one could since they were well in SLA. I got a new request raised (38605272)  to get the connection cancelled. Someone from retention called me back in just 2 hours and mentioned that they would raise a priority ticket (38615858) to get the connection fixed the same day which I agreed to and he closed (Cancellation ticket 38605272 ). SLA which I received on SMS was to get the issue resolved on 17/09 (14:00 Hrs). No one called me back till 17th evening and I had to call the customer service again for getting this cancelled. 38657068 was raised on 17th for the cancellation request, I again got a callback within 2 hours from the retention department in Gurgaon mentioning that he would personally take care of my problem today itself and opened another ticket 38615858 with the SLA of 18/09 - 11:00 Hrs. As always the Engineer did not care about the ticket, no one called and the issue stayed Unresolved with me down for 5 days.

It was a high time on 19th when I finally decided not to stay with the Service provider who cannot provide SERVICE so I called and was informed that he is not senior enough to raise a disconnection request and that he would get the request escalated which I denied mentioning not to escalate since I do not want to use AIRTEL anymore.

Multiple tickets 38777910 / 38817618 / 38848744 / 38980044 have been raised since then with NO LUCK at all. A Service manager called me from his personal cellphone on 26th September (Which I liked) that he is personally taking care of my problem and would follow it up and get it resolved the same day. Which did not happen even while I'm writing it on 27th September about 16:00 Hrs

Suggestion for Printer Server cum Router

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 06:29 AM PDT

I have a SCX 4300 Samsung printer at my place which does not support WiFi printing. I also have a 450TC1 ADSL2+ router on my airtel broadband but the WiFi range is very poor on it.

I am thinking to purchase an equipment which can solve both purposes whereby 1) it becomes a print server for my printer and I should be able to print documents from any machine wirelessly and 2) it doubles up as a WiFi router to extend range of WiFi and let me transfer files on the WiFi itself instead of using my internet GBs.

Can Wireless transfers be done using 450TC1?

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 06:03 AM PDT

I have an Airtel broadband connection. As I understand Beetel 450TC1 is a modem cum wireless router. I was wondering is there any easy way to set up wireless transfers between two computers in the same household one having win XP and other Win 7.

I don't really want to use internet for such purposes for 1) it is a slow process when huge files are involved and 2) it will unnecessarily waste my internet GBs.

Rate applicable post data transfer quota

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 05:51 AM PDT

Please tell me what this Rate applicable post data transfer quota is?

I want to know about an Airtel plan, ROTN Max 175 GB which is 2 Mbps for 175 GB and 256 kbps with Rate applicable post data transfer quota of 60 ps/min

What is this rate applicable post data transfer quota? it says 60 ps/min? Yes, its says 60 ps/min and not 60ps/mb.

Does this mean that after the monthly data quota is over you will be charged 60 ps/min despite bandwidth speed being lowered to 256kbps ?

Another Question :-

Hello. I have an Airtel Broadband plan Max 175 GB. 2 Mbps for 175 GB and then it goes to 256 kbps post that with Rate applicable post data transfer quota as Nil. I only upgraded to that plan a few months ago.

But when i checked the Airtel broadband tariff section the plan (Max 175 GB) i am using is no longer there and instead they have a new plan (ROTN Max 175 GB) which is almost the same, same price, same data limit, same everything except that it has the Rate applicable post data transfer quota of 60 ps/min.

Does this mean that i will be automatically be changed to that plan? I don't want to change to that plan, i want to keep my old plan. Can Airtel forcefully change me to that plan since the old one was discontinued.

What is ROTN ?

Please help me.

I ordered Biotique soaps from HK last week amongst other items. Each soap is Rs 70 and I expect them to send me normal stuff which I get in store. Instead they have shipped me 15 month old stock with the wrappers a mess and the soap damaged and powdery. Looks like they buy scrap and resell at MRP. I bought Brut soaps too, but those were fine. It was the Biotique ones that were a waste. Suggest you guys be aware before ordering here.

Hathway in Kolkata - Help with STB

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Recently Hathway launched in Kolkata. Our LCO changed to Hathway and installed a Skyworth C9000 STB in my house. But there seems to be some issues with the STB.

The EPG is only updated for 10 hrs. In some channels I can only see the channel number but no channel name. But one can see the video and audio. In one case the same channel is present in two different channel numbers.

Do I need to re-tune the STB?

There is no menu option in the STB to re-tune.

Can somebody help with any HOT-KEY option?

Need Suggestion for a backup broadband in Gurgaon

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 04:53 AM PDT

I have a small office setup at my home in Gurgaon and completely rely on Airtel broadband.

Of late I am seeing deterioration of Airtel services in my area where it goes down every 10-15 days for 5-8 hours at times. I am planning to get a backup internet service.

What do you think would be the best and affordable back up internet service for my case where at least 2-3 users should be able to connect to the internet wirelessly.
