Switching from MTNL to Airtel IPTV

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 12:36 PM PDT

Since MTNL is closing its IPTV operation, I need to switch to other providers. Can somebody suggest me if its worth trying Airtel IPTV or should I go with DTH (TataSky, Videocon, etc)?

Airtel uses the same STB (UT Starcom MC1088l) as the one used by MTNL. Can I continue using the same STB from MTNL or do I need to purchase a new one for Airtel? Do Airtel provide STB on security or rent or do we need to purchase it ? Can they re-program my old STB ?

Reliance ADSL vs Metro Ethernet

Reliance ADSL vs Metro Ethernet
What's the maximum speed a modem(especially Reliance modem) can handle?

If the future update is like 8/16 Mbps can the modem handle it or its a must to have Metro Ethernet for that speed?

How Airtel handles this issues?

Latency of gaming servers on BSNL FTTH Broadband?

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 12:33 PM PDT

Hi,

I don't see another FTTH thread even though BSNL is offering it too so I'll ask here.

It would be nice to know and perhaps sticky what sort of latency FTTH users are getting to popular FPS game servers in Asia. Latency is everything here.
A simple traceroute will do, but the output of pathping works too. This is best done late night to see the lowest latency.

I have listed some servers for Team Fortress 2, I can add Counter Strike GW too:

203.116.80.199:27016
111.118.186.226:27016
216.12.220.168:22075

The port numbers are there in case you want to check latency in Steam, else ignore it for traceroute.
If some of you could measure and post this with the city you are in, I would be grateful.

ACT Broadband Bangalore Reviews

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 12:32 PM PDT

Hello Readers,

My name is Vivek Sinha Anurag and i am going to post some "great" work shown by Act Broadband.

I applied for ACT Broadband 5 Mbps plan [its having cap value of 35GB after that speed will reduce to 256 kbps] by calling their customer care on 16th Aug 2011. I was surprised to see their lightening fast response as the representative came to my doorstep the very next day and on 17th Aug 2011 Mr Ashitt O.S. collected the money and documents and told me that withing 5 days i will get my connection and i even got sms confirmation that my request no is 142263.

Now the real story started. Even after 6 days no one ever bothered to check my request so i called customer care [ 080-42840000] to remind them and i was told that i will get it withing next 2 days. I waited for next 2 days and called them again.

I was surprised to learn a new technical term from them that they are "Uploading network" hence its taking time and soon i will get my connection. Since my work was getting affected because of their delay i applied for a BSNL connection too. Now today is 5th September and i am still waiting for the connection and to my surprise i got the BSNL broadband last week.

I tried escalating this matter and asked the customer care for any high level contact and they said that i need to mail helpdesk@acttv.in. I emailed them but i got no response.

Please note some points regarding ACT broadband before applying ACT broadband
1. They dont have nodal officer/appellate authority [against TRAI rules and i have already escalated this matter to TRAI officials with the help of pgportal.gov.in]
2. They have a customer base of 2500 users in bangalore and they are not able to manage even this small number.
3. They DO NOT PROVIDE STATIC IP [even if they claim to do so]
4. Their customer care service is useless. All you will losse is your balance by talking to them
5. They can "Upload network" [You can imagine the understanding capability of their technicians]
6. They are fast in collecting money but lazy in delivering service

Final conclusion: To be on safe side stay away from them else you will suffer like me. Morning shows the day and even before using their service i am suffering. Don't know what will happen when i get the connection and i face any problem that time.

1.6 MBPS speed on 2 MBPS plan

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 12:31 PM PDT

Is this normal? According to the technician it certainly is but is it the same for everyone else using the 2 MBPS (512 KBPS post FUP) Tata Docomo Broadband plan?

MTNL Broadband VDSL2 User Experiences

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 12:23 PM PDT

I wanted to start a new experience thread simply to discuss MTNL VDSL.

Some things to consider before/after taking a new VDSL connection

SNR margins (SNRM)
Below 9 dB : Poor experience with lots of HEC and CRC errors. Line will disconnect frequently.
9   - 11  dB : Ok but not ideal. Disconnections will be there if some unexpected variance is introduced by rains, humidity in the wire.
12 - 16  dB : Ideal and realistic value. Expect almost no disconnections as the line has more wiggle room for tolerating variances.
17 dB and up : God Mode. Lucky few get this on VDSL synced at 30 mbps and up. So far I have seen various stats and no one has reported this SNRM (That is because VDSL sync rates are always higher)

Higher you sync rate, lower the SNRM will be. Lower the SNRM, lower the connection reliability. Lower reliability means frequent disconnections. Hence ISP's have a setting in DSLAM to artificially increase SNRM value for a particular phone line. Hence you sync at lower rate and line automagically becomes stable.

Attenuation may not be that important after all. It reduces sync speeds over a distance but is not an indicator of connection reliability. (You can roughly calculate your line length from it. Do it here)

Apply for VDSL connection only if you are within half km. Otherwise you will get ADSL like sync rates.

I will update this entry with some of our findings. Since VDSL is somewhat new to India, this thread can help some early adopters.

Currently the speeds are decent for fast servers. But single streams are slow due to a bottleneck somewhere.

The horror called Delhivery

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 11:14 AM PDT

I placed an order for Micromax Canvas 2 Plus via Snapdeal this Sunday. Since this was my first order from them so I thought of going with COD option. The order was dispatched on Monday via Delhivery. Item reached Delhi on the Tuesday night(6th). Since then its roaming across several of Delhiver's offices. Yesterday I contacted them to enquire about my delivery. The lady at the phone specifically mentioned that the delay was caused because the package got misplaced. Its natural for me to get suspicious. I wanted to open the package before handing them over the money.

Anyways, today afternoon the package landed finally at the center nearest(Janakpuri Hub) to my home. Phew. I had already called them before to enquire upon which I was reassured that it will be disapatched as soon as it arrives at their Janakpuri hub. It landed there at 3:15 pm. By 5:10 pm it had not arrived. I called them again and learnt from the talks behind the handset that there was no one to deliver it. WOW. :o I heard the following conversation:

"Yaar us phone waale package ka kya hua? Badi transaction hai. Yaar koi hai ni deliver karne ke liye. Yaar jaldi karwa. Okay."  Awesome attitude from a company which is specialised in handling logistics for e-commerce companies.

Now I got a bit angry. I called them again at 6 to tell ki bhaiyaa agar aaj de rahe ho toh theek hai warna apne paas rakhna. Because I won't be able to collect it tomorrow. He said, sir we will deliver it. Now uptil now the status page kept saying that its at Janakpuri center. Just 1 minute after the call, the following status appeared:

Dispatched | Aug. 8, 2013, 6:10 p.m. | Dispatched for Delivery | Janakpuri (Delhi) | Delhivery

Wow. It worked. Around 6:20 I got a call from the delivery boy who was asking, sir package leke aa jaaoon? I literally facepalmed and said yaar ab bhi puchega. He said, sir I had to confirm since its a COD Item. He also mentioned that he will be able to hand over the package only when I will hand him the money. I said I will check the package first since you had yesterday mentioned about it getting misplaced. I mean how can I? I had the cash with change with me ready but I wanted to be sure. I said, anyways come and we will see.

Around 15 minutes later these messages were posted.

Returned | Aug. 8, 2013, 6:29 p.m. | Wanted to open the package before payment | Janakpuri (Delhi) | Delhivery
Dispatched | Aug. 8, 2013, 6:30 p.m. | Consignee did not have cash | Janakpuri (Delhi) | Delhivery
Pending | Aug. 8, 2013, 6:26 p.m. | Consignee did not have cash | Janakpuri (Delhi) | Delhivery

Blatant Lies. How do they know sitting at their office that I don't have the money? Also the item never got dispatched. Liars. That's how they washed off their responsbility and put the whole blame on the customer. I just wanted to confirm. Its okay if they can't do that. I understand but atleast stop lying. I called them in anger and asked how can they lie. They had hardly any justification. More so because I was angry I was not even in a mood to listen. I said I am complaining to Snapdeal and their superiors. He said, Kardo and disconnected.

I called Snapdeal and explained them the situation. He said me to wait for 1 more day. And just now Snapdeal has closed the order saying "Item returned by customer."

Facepalm.

Lessons Learnt: COD is a mess. Avoid Delhivery and Snapdeal.

Making my life hell, MTNL you should be sued!

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 09:12 AM PDT

Hey Everyone,

So I've been trying to get this problem fixed for six months now!

Ever since January 2013 my line gets disconnected every 3-8 minutes.

I've called the helpline and everything, they claim to have done whatever they can apart from changing the lines since supposedly the lineman is 'Not Responding', yes that's right since the last six months the line man just decided he does not want to do his work.

Is there any, I mean ANY alternative to this nightmare!

Due to this issue I've not been able to take a single call (international on my lync) from home,

and surfing the net is so incredibly frustrating.

Seriously considering switching to Airtel, because for some cryptic reason there is NO, absolutely NO other ISP willing to provide a connection in my area (Juhu, J.V.P.D.).

Spearhead was willing to but they wanted 5k connection charge and a 1 year commitment, good luck with that.

My Stats:

ADSL Firmware Version : FwVer:3.5.10.0_A_TC3084 HwVer:T14.F7_1.0
Line State: Showtime
Modulation: ADSL2 PLUS
Annex Mode: ANNEX_A

                                     Downstream      Upstream
SNR Margin :                  44.5                     8.0 db
Line Attenuation:            20.0                   15.3 db
Data Rate:                      2048                 1021 kbps

I don't hope to gain anything from posting this,
besides just venting my frustration.

Can't access DD-WRT interface

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 08:56 AM PDT

This is not a case of a bad flash because I flashed my router months ago and it worked fine until today when I changed the modem connected to the router.

Here's what I've tried so far:

30-30-30 reset

Powered off the router for a few minutes.

Connected the router to a different machine.

Disconnected all cables except the power cord and the ethernet. Still no go.

What should I do next?

P.S: I can't telnet into the router either and pinging it returns a "Transmit Failed, General Error"

Weird BSNL Broadband Connection Problem :(

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 08:46 AM PDT

Hi,

So, I am getting a weird problem with my BSNL Broadband. My password has been reset to "password" but its not working and I am getting error 691 (id/pass error). But I am putting all right info as I am not a new user but 5 yr old BSNL user.

So, it all started when there was some problem in my line and SNR value went down to 6. And then both phone and broadband were dead. DSL Link was not stable at that time. So, I complained and got my line rectified but still DSL link was not stabling. Then my local exchange change some jumper or etc. Then the link got stable.

But now this error came ERROR 691 and that too when I never changed password and it was saved in modem from before.

So, I thought maybe some generic error,  I call customer care to reset my password. But even after then it wont work.

I tried using all passwords i.e. my old one and the new reset password but its not working at all. All I get is Error 691. :(

So, anyone please help me how to solve it? What could be the possible reason behind this? Coz the exchange people told me that they can see that password was reset succesfully but still not working.

My exchange people have no idea why its happening. They don't even know whats SNR Margin value. LOL :P

Currently my SNR is 7 but the link is stable. Only error is that dialing problem - ERROR 691.

ACT broadband Bangalore worst service

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 08:41 AM PDT

I am a customer of ACT broadband for last six months, i opted for 15 Mbps 40 GB plan, from 1st of this month i started experiencing .38-.44 mbps speed, i lodged a complaint and the feedback i received are really funny

1. I utilised 40 GB in four hours of previous day , i don't know whether that is possible by anyone to use- No auto updates are on and i requested them, which website or to which ip the system was connected and used this ? No reply from them

2. Then the customer service executive told, i might have used a router without password, the funniest part is There is no router at my home and i connect the cable directly to one PC

3. I also heard similar issue from my friends, ACT is not a reliable service provider, This is the problem with the unknown brands, you get a grievance redressal .

I DON'T SUGGEST "ACT BROADBAND" IN BANGALORE FOR ANY ONE LOOKING FOR A NEW BROADBAND CONNECTION

Thanks,

Ashok

So often, we have some random thought or point to make/discuss , and I personally sometimes skip it as I feel it is not worthy of a new thread & feel its unfair to hijack an existing thread...

Would recommend creating new thread for any big news & as usual we have threads for specific series/tournaments.. This is for something general random posts related to cricket...Kind of the Cricket Offtopic thread...

Tata Sky DTH now replacing MPEG2 STBs with MPEG4 STBs for free!

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 07:59 AM PDT

We are replacing close to 5-6 million MPEG-2 SD STBs at no cost to consumers over the next year. All of this is coming in from internal accruals.

But you need to wait for one more year to see many new channels

We have been adding channels in a phased manner; the process will now be accelerated with the MPEG-4 STB. By June-July next year we should be able to revise our channel offerings to consumers,

My experience with Tikona

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 07:54 AM PDT

Have been reading lots of negative reviews about Tikona lately... And wanted to share my experience regarding their services. I've been using Tikona for around one and a half year now, and it been quite a pleasant experience... I am not saying that don't have any issues or problems, but which broadband service doesn't? They have been providing me with the promised speed. Apart from a few downtimes initially, that is when I took Tikona, their connection has been quite reliable. Their customer service, I observed, have improved quite a bit since I first subscribed to them. Not the cheapest but, you surely get what you pay for. Attached is the screenshot of the speed test of my connection.

Best thermal paste for dell laptops ?

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 06:32 AM PDT

Hey guys,

Long story short, i got this "super solo" silicone compound for free with my new 1TB 2.5" drive and it sucks ! Also, 1TB drive is thicker (12.5mm) i am also gonna return it. Since i applied this "Super Solo" paste, CPU temps has risen by 5-8c. This compound is white in color versus my old "dried off" grey compound that was applied before.

I went to 10 different stores and everyone was selling this Super solo, i asked few of them why don't they sell those high quality thermal pastes and i got same reply " there is no demand ! " or " Customers don't bother"

Only option left is to shop online, i googled around and found artic silver  and deepcool thermal compounds available in ebay. What do you think is best ? My budget is around 500 bucks!

Unable to ping / ssh between two computers over Beam Tele wifi

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 06:26 AM PDT

Hi,

I am subscribed to 25 mbps plan from Beam Tele. I have no issues with the speed nor with the FUP which is 70 Gigs. My problem is since I have a wifi router provided by Beam, I wanted to share data between my laptops over ssh. However, I am neither able to ssh nor I am able to ping over Beam connection. However, if I switch to my other connection (BSNL) I can easily transfer files between my computers over ssh.

Beam customer support is not very helpful. I am hopeful that I will be able to find help in these forums.

Ashes 2013 (Aus v Eng)

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 05:35 AM PDT

http://www.espncricinfo.com/the-ashes-2013/content/current/story/644797.html

Mickey Arthur has been sacked as Australia's head coach less than three weeks before the start of the Ashes. Cricket Australia is yet to officially announce the decision but the chief executive James Sutherland and general manager of team performance Pat Howard are due to hold a press conference in Bristol on Monday morning (UK time) to confirm the move.

Darren Lehmann, the successful Queensland coach, is considered a leading contender to replace Arthur at short notice. Lehmann is in England having just finished a tour as mentor of the Australia A outfit and has won rave reviews for the tough and somewhat old-school approach he has taken with Queensland since he was appointed in 2011.

But whatever the case, the axing of Arthur has left the Australian camp in a shambles on the eve of the Ashes campaign. The squad was due to meet in Taunton on Monday ahead of their first tour game against Somerset, with some of the players having been part of the Australia A squad, some having been playing in the Champions Trophy and others having been warming up in county cricket.

Surprising move just ahead of the Ashes...

The first build out is a look at what will become Opera 17. Features might be turned off if they are not ready when 17 is promoted to Next, but on the other hand Developer stream is almost living on our master branch so you'll not only get bug fixes but also feature improvements.

Features that are on by default:

Start up mode option - What should a fresh session contain? Last session, speed dial or a set of pages.
Pinned tabs - a nice beginning of future tabs improvements.
Rocker gestures - (left->right click, right->left click)
Extension APIs - more API stuff to play with: bookmarks, commands, omnibox, webNavigation. (currently no API-article, but it will come)
Search engine manager - You can finally add DuckDuckGo (or other sites) as a search engine :)

There's also a few extra goodies turned off by default because they are not ready yet. They might, or might not make it to 17 depending on how well they work.

People join army to die according to a minister from Bihar

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 04:42 AM PDT

Bihar Rural Works and Panchayati Raj Minister Bhim Singh on Thursday stirred a controversy with his insensitive remark on Army jawans. When media persons asked why no JD(U) minister was at the funeral of jawans who died at LoC, he said, "people join forces only to die."
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was quick to reprimand his colleague and asked the minister to tender unconditional apology.
BJP lashed out at the minister and said "people of the country will never tolerate such insults to the martyrs".
