AC Schnitzer has showed up at the Geneva Motor Show with not one, but two fresh-off-the-press upgrade packages for 2011.

Not wanting to look completely unfriendly to Mother Earth, AC Schnitzer has taken their expertise to the Z4 and BMW’s EfficientDynamics system, working over a 320d mill to go under the Z4′s hood. The 2011 AC Schnitzer 99d gets a 70-hp boost to 190, hits 60 in 6.9 seconds, releases a scant 99g of C02 per mile and returns a handsome 63 mpg in the European cycle. That, according to Schnitzer, is better than any BMW on the market. Unfortunately, the 99d is just a concept, and won’t be available to the public any time soon.

For the family minded executives attending the show, AC Schnitzer started with the 2011 BMW 550i, bumping the car from 407 to 540 horsepower. According to Schnitzer, the result is a 4.5-second 0-60 sprint and a whopping 198 mph top end. The engine exhales through a new set of the tuner’s own mufflers capped with chrome surrounds. The resulting executive express has been dubbed the ACS5 Sport S.

Hauling all that energy to a stop is a revised set of brakes sporting eight-piston calipers. Outside, Schnitzer went all-out to ensure that the car would be stable at its newfound velocity. The laundry list of exterior mods includes a front spoiler, carbon ducts for the brakes, new engine bay vents and, of course, your choice of 20 or 21-inch AC Schnitzer custom wheels.

Small business hiring has markedly increased in the past three months. The turnaround in small businesses hiring, which creates a majority of U.S. jobs, is seen as a possible turning point for the weak labor market. While hiring in large companies has been relatively flat, a three-month surge in small business hiring is being credited for lowering the U.S. unemployment rate nearly an entire percentage point.

Small business hiring statistics

Hiring at companies with less than 50 employees has been increasing over the past 12 months. From December through February, small business hiring has increased by more than 100,000 jobs per month. In that time period, the U.S. unemployment rate has dropped from 9.8 percent in November to 8.9 percent in February, according to the Department of Labor Statistics. Of the 217,000 jobs created in the U.S. in February, 46 percent of the hires were by small businesses. Payrolls at large companies have only grown by about 10,000 in each of the past three months, just 5 percent of the total jobs created for an employment sector that accounts for 16 percent of non-government jobs.

A turning point in the labor market?

Small business hiring has been increasing, but it still has a long way to go to fix the devastation wrought by the recession. Between April 2008 and February 2010, the small business sector cut 2.7 million jobs. Until December, small business hiring was lackluster. In the past year, 607,000 jobs have been created by small businesses. But the recent surge has analysts optimistic that the trend will continue. Over the past five months, employers have consistently reported that they plan on hiring more employees, according to the National Independent Business Association. A turning point in labor demand was also indicated by a survey conducted by Discover Financial Services, which reported that 11 percent of small businesses planned to hire in February, up from 6 percent in August. With five number one singles, fourteen Top 40 hits, and four number one albums, the Eagles were among the most successful recording artists of the 1970s. At the end of the 20th century, two of those albums — Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) and Hotel California — ranked among the ten best-selling albums ever, and the popularity of 2007′s Long Road Out of Eden proved the Eagles’ staying power in the new millenium. Though most of its members came from outside California, the group was closely identified with a country- and folk-tinged sound that initially found favor in Los Angeles during the late ’60s, as championed by such bands as the Flying Burrito Brothers and Poco (both of which contributed members to the Eagles). But the band also drew upon traditional rock & roll styles and, in their later work, helped define the broadly popular rock sound that became known as classic rock. As a result, the Eagles achieved a perennial appeal among generations of music fans who continued to buy their records many years after they had split up, which helped inspire the Eagles’ reunion in the mid-’90s.

With the Eagles having officially disbanded in May 1982, leaving behind eight Top 40 hits that followed the release of the spectacularly successful Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, Asylum Records naturally compiled a second hits collection for fall 1982 release. Seven of those hits were included (the exception being the seasonal “Please Come Home for Christmas”), along with three LP tracks, one each from One of These Nights, Hotel California, and The Long Run. Disdained by longtime fans and by the Eagles themselves, the collection was perfect for listeners who knew the band through number one radio hits like “New Kid in Town,” “Hotel California,” and “Heartache Tonight.” It also spared them having to buy mediocre albums like The Long Run and Eagles Live just to have copies of the best-known songs from those releases. No wonder, then, that over the years Eagles Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 achieved multi-platinum status.
