Detroit Preview: Mini Paceman concept relieves Countryman of extra doors Posted: 20 Dec 2010 10:19 PM PST Filed under: Concept Cars, Detroit Auto Show, Coupe, Crossover, Mini Mini Paceman concept – Click above for high-res image gallery How many Minis is too many? Mini’s about to find out as its product portfolio expands faster than a jilted lover’s waistline. The hatchback that (re)started it all and the cabrio that followed shortly thereafter have since been joined by the Clubman wagon and the Countryman crossover, with WRC and Dakar rally versions, speedsters and coupes and more in the production pipeline. But that doesn’t even take into account some of the concept derivatives that haven’t (yet) made it to production, and this is the latest. Called the Paceman, it’s essentially a Countryman minus a couple of doors. It’s set to be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January as a concept car, but could very well make it to production as well. Taking a page out of its parent company’s BMW‘s playbook, Mini calls the Paceman a “Sports Activity Coupe” (sort of like the BMW X6) and insists it’s the first of its kind in the small premium segment. A “first” is pretty easy to achieve when you define the category yourself, but to our eyes the Paceman, with its sloping white roof, looks set to take on the likes of the three-door Range Rover Evoque, only smaller. Under the hood, Mini’s fitted the JCW turbo four with 211 horsepower, mated to the same ALL4 all-wheel drive system used in the Countryman. More details are available in the press release after the jump, along with the initial images in the gallery below. We’ll be on hand at Cobo Hall to bring you live impressions from NAIAS, so stay tuned. Toyota will offer first plug-in hybrid cars Posted: 20 Dec 2010 07:57 PM PST To save the environment, more and more auto makers are moving into making hybrid-electric vehicles the type of vehicles that can feed on bio oil and use batteries alternatively, which the main objective is to improve fuel efficiency. Now, Toyota, as the leader of green auto makers, has announced that it’d build its first plug-in hybrid car by 2010. The plug-in hybrid is different from the current hybrid models, which allows recharging of the batteries from any ordinary power outlet. Conventional hybrids are recharged by power generated by the wheels. The plug-in hybrid vehicle that is to be developed by Toyota, will run on lithium-ion batteries, instead of the nickel-metal hydride batteries that power the Prius and other Toyota models. The plug-in hybrid and lithium-ion powered vehicles are said to be capable of achieving fuel efficiency of 99.9 miles-per-gallon in electric mode. But it can only go up to 7 miles on pure battery power. Toyota will unveil the models that will have plug-in hybrid versions available at the 2009 Detroit auto show. The new lithium-ion-equipped vehicles will first be made available to Toyota’s commercial customers â€" such as government agencies and corporations. The announcement of Toyota is seen as a strong competitor to GM, which has also announced that they’d produce their own plug-ins around the same time. |

Audi R8 V10 Racing Edition Privé’s 2011 Vehicle of Choice. Posted: 20 Dec 2010 03:19 PM PST Anderson Germany has unveiled the reworked Audi R8 V10, christened the 'Racing Edition', that comes with changes to its exterior, interior as well as the engine. The modifications resulted in an increase in engine power to 585 hp or 436 KW and reportedly allows the vehicle to achieve a top speed of 203 mph. The stock version of the car can reach up to 196 mph. Privé International has chosen this vehicle as our vehicle of choice for 2011 which comes conveniently equipped with Privé’s corporate orange & dark gray colors. This will be the car we will use for participating in; The Gumball 3000, Bull Run, and Gold Rush Rally. For the exterior, carbon fiber has been used for most parts including the front apron, the discrete rear spoiler, rear diffuser, rear window bordering and the exterior mirrors. The modified R8 rides on the custom 19-inch lightweight carbon-coated alloy rims that sports an orange pinstripe and use 235/35 tires for the front axle and 295/30 tires for the rear one. A new concept termed valve commanded exhaust system has been used to make the car lighter. This reportedly makes the car lighter by 37 lbs than the factory unit. Meanwhile, the V10 engine has received new ECU software, sports air filter and an exhaust system that feature special valves, allowing the driver to adjust the sound. Further, the interior has been refurbished with carbon fiber and given a leather finish and orange stitching. Door trims, radio frame, ashtray, gear stick frame, hand brake knob and steering wheel all have been included in the package for a carbon make up. |
Red Bull Renault RB6 Season in Review: The Evolution of a Champion Posted: 20 Dec 2010 02:42 PM PST In five very short years Red Bull Racing has achieved what neither Jaguar or Stewart-Ford racing could in almost ten, win either a driver’s or constructor’s world championship title. Jaguar bought out the struggling Stewart-Ford team. Then, in 2004, Red Bull came in and bought the defunct Jaguar Racing team. The thought was, amongst the Jaguar members, that nothing would change. But to win a championship, something which Jaguar had not been able to do, it was obvious things would have to change. Many people were replaced; Christian Horner was brought in as Team Director, and from the very start it was apparent Red Bull would be a competitor to be contended with at each race. Ever since its first race at Melbourne in 2005, when David Coulthard was able to shoot up into 4th place at the first corner, run as high as second and end up finishing the race a surprising fourth, it was clear Red Bull meant to contend not only for good finishes, but victories. But when Adrian Newey came on board, despite the early struggles, it also became clear Red Bull would, at some point in time, become a champion. |
