Toyota will offer first plug-in hybrid cars Posted: 09 Dec 2010 11:20 PM PST To save the environment, more and more auto makers are moving into making hybrid-electric vehicles the type of vehicles that can feed on bio oil and use batteries alternatively, which the main objective is to improve fuel efficiency. Now, Toyota, as the leader of green auto makers, has announced that it’d build its first plug-in hybrid car by 2010. The plug-in hybrid is different from the current hybrid models, which allows recharging of the batteries from any ordinary power outlet. Conventional hybrids are recharged by power generated by the wheels. The plug-in hybrid vehicle that is to be developed by Toyota, will run on lithium-ion batteries, instead of the nickel-metal hydride batteries that power the Prius and other Toyota models. The plug-in hybrid and lithium-ion powered vehicles are said to be capable of achieving fuel efficiency of 99.9 miles-per-gallon in electric mode. But it can only go up to 7 miles on pure battery power. Toyota will unveil the models that will have plug-in hybrid versions available at the 2009 Detroit auto show. The new lithium-ion-equipped vehicles will first be made available to Toyota’s commercial customers â€" such as government agencies and corporations. The announcement of Toyota is seen as a strong competitor to GM, which has also announced that they’d produce their own plug-ins around the same time. |
EVO drives the new Lancia Stratos Posted: 09 Dec 2010 10:51 PM PST Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupe, Performance, Europe, Specialty, Design/Style Pininfarina Lancia Stratos – Click above for high-res image gallery It’s a shame the Pininfarina Stratos probably won’t see widespread production. The car is hewn straight from the naughtiest of our automotive dreams, and with some of its aluminum bones borrowed from the Ferrari 430 Scuderia it promises to be as fun to fling as anything with four wheels. The crew at EVO was lucky enough to weasel their way behind the wheel of the lovely one-off, becoming the first journalists to do so in the process. That sound? It’s the noise our boundless jealousy makes when agitated. EVO was able to take the car out for a couple of hot laps around Circuit Paul Ricard, and the verdict is that, as you might expect, the car is plenty nimble and just as quick. There is some indication that the vehicle’s short wheelbase would likely make for some hair-raising antics at higher speeds, though. EVO even goes so far as to say that the vehicle has a completely different personality compared to its Prancing Horse donor. Even better, there may be a very small production run in the vehicle’s future. Sign us up. Posted: 09 Dec 2010 06:11 PM PST Throughout its production, the Miura received constant updates, first with the P400 S model, and then best of the breed, the P400SV. The S saw an alleged 20 horsepower increase, better brakes, and chassis stiffening, and was built from late 1968 to 1971. The SV, which debuted at the 1971 Geneva Auto Show, had modified bodywork-mostly distinguished by the headlamps’ lack of ‘eyelashes.’ The Miura SV on exhibit-essentially an S with SV bodywork-is likely the first production prototype presented at Geneva. |
