Clearly you have not read this plan.

Unfortunately, it pins much of India's broadband-fix on 3G, and in metro on building a government owned FTTH network everywhere.

The problem with this is that it still needs to be built, and the government still needs to mandate all of the things outlined here - local governments are still continuing to charge hefty fees on right-of-way, so for 3 lakhs worth of cable we/they still have to pay 20, 30, 50 lakhs even 1 crore per KM for the ROW: this, even though theoretically under the old telegraph act, it's supposed to be basically free!!!

Recently there was an issue whereby I think it was Pune was charging 4500 per meter for telecom companies but only 1500 per meter for power companies.

There is also the recommendation that India move away from DSL over to Cable on the cable TV networks, which would seem to suggest in many cities that the local cablewala will be relied upon even more (and who wants that?)

There are already 9 submarine cables going in and out of India, 3 of which have been opened in the last 18 months. Since VSNL owns all the landing stations, this may be somewhat problematic, even if it will be Pacnet's own gateway.

There is nearly 25 Terabits of capacity available on all of these cables, yet the lit capacity across them is measurable in gigabits, and WAC will add another 6Tbit/s or so but for it to reduce the prices providers are going to have to actually buy the capacity, so the prices are going to have to be really quite special, and even then, realistically I'm not expecting Tata and Bharti to respond with revised tariffs until WAC is closer to launch.

Meh. Duties are not so much of a problem. Yes they seem high compared to the price-tag on the device, but when it comes to the cost per customer, the change will be negligible: a few rupees per month at best, and there is still some requirement that something like 30% of the equipment purchased be manufactured by an Indian company. In our network, I expect that will end up being dead equipment and thus dead cash.

I've already revised the tariffs and will continue to do so until launch day, but I am not legally allowed to launch yet. Even if we don't change any prices from what we'd previously announced for the time being, I think we're pretty good value for money overall - we're not charging exhorbatent rates for data (less than Rs15/GB) and our flat-rate plans are very well priced considering the speeds we're offering. If you don't think so, I challenge you to find me a regular tariff that beats us GB for GB or mbit for mbit.

Graphics card and motherboard repairs

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 12:00 PM PST

Hello
Firstly, I apologize in advance if this question was covered in recent past. I have just joined the group. I live in London, UK. I wish to know name (and contact details) of very reliable places in (ideally) Mumbai or Delhi where I can have high end g/cards and m/boards repaired. This will be on an ongoing basis, so it has to be some who I can trust to get the job done. Your suggestions will be most appreciated.
Many thanks
Ajay

Airtel IPTV vs Airtel DTH (vs Tata Sky) - 40"LCD

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 10:36 AM PST

How is the audio/video quality of Airtel IPTV compared to any DTH in general?

DTH operators compromise audio/video quality to accommodate more channels since that have to put out every channels simultaneously of a limited bandwidth. But thats not the case in IPTV. Here only the channel is being watched is going to be streamed. But still IPTV operator can compromise quality to accommodate more number of customer in a pipe.

To be specific, in DTH not ALL channels are having stereo audio. How is this in IPTV?
