The general cricket discussion thread

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 12:57 PM PDT

Why this thread?

So often, we have some random thought or point to make/discuss , and I personally sometimes skip it as I feel it is not worthy of a new thread & feel its unfair to hijack an existing thread...

Would recommend creating new thread for any big news & as usual we have threads for specific series/tournaments.. This is for something general random posts related to cricket...Kind of the Cricket Offtopic thread...

Will start with one post

gender division in two opposites is grave mistake

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 10:35 AM PDT

some excerpts from man is the extension of woman by Dr. Makarand Fulzele........

..External genitalia - labia fuse to scrotum and the clitoris extends to become a penis. The ovaries and testicles are basically same. But one is exposed to certain temperature for a particular period to grow into ovaries. Whereas testicles are cooled within time to maintain their integrity. To put it into scientific language, all humans are females to start with. Some develop further to become male. Man or woman is born. At puberty fully grown man or woman develops libido. At menopause, both female and male) estrogen or testosterone resources are finished and physical changes towards opposite gender start appearing. `So our life also runs in circle. We start at birth and then from infancy, become young. Then a full-grown woman or man is developed. One lifetime is consumed. The menopause is reached towards the end of the life. At this juncture man or woman is getting converted into the opposite sex. Before the changes are too prominent to be ignored, the man or woman is dead. They go to the grave with the secret!'

Can the fast internet be stored for future use?

I got myself an internet connection not too long ago. They allot 5GB, and then the speed reduces (Unlimited). I just wanted to know whether it's in the realm of possibilities to switch to slow version now and start using my 5GB later on, in the month?

Cheater Idea

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 09:05 AM PDT

On 14 Feb there was special offer of Internet. 1.5 GB 2G data for 30 days for Rs. 99 only. So I recharge with the same. but cheater IDea given me only 450 MB 2G data for 15 days.

So  I have lodged complaint about data benefit which was not given.

But today I got sms mentioning that my complaint is cancelled.

Idea  cancel the complaint without providing any solution. I have talked to customer care executive, he said system is slow and he can't give reason why complaint is cancelled blah blah blah. Even after talking & explaining the matter with customer care Supervisor  (she keeps me waiting for 23 minutes & then disconnect the phone). Now I am not able to dial 198 as Idea barred my number from calling,

WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT IDEA PROVIDING? IS THIS THE WAY IDEA TREATS CUSTOMERS?

Please suggest me the future course of action for the matter.

MTS 3G PLUS - EVDO REV.B vs. AirTel LTE 4G

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 08:23 AM PDT

Hi Guys

Checkout the MTS 3G PLUS speedtest in Bangalore. The connection seems to be extremely reliable and Stable.

In my opinion, MTS is performing much better than AirTel 4G in Bengaluru.

850 Mhz penetration inside buildings is brilliant. EVDO REV.B UPGRADE (A.K.A 3G PLUS IN INDIA)

MTS should add 1 more carrier of 1.25Mhz to achieve 14 Mbps, instead of just 9 Mbps.

I'm waiting for Support from DFS CDMA Team to Flash my Ipad Air sprint CDMA (without using a SIM card) Reliance RCOM has taken the wrong path in opting for HSPA+ technology with CA (carrier aggregation) They could have upgraded the existing CDMA network to EVDO rev.B by adding carriers.

HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3545 AIO Printer

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 07:04 AM PDT

Check HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3545 AIO Printer Deals on: Flipkart | Amazon

---

My aging HP Photosmart 8158 printer finally gave up yesterday and sister needs printer frequently now a days.  I already had HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3545 AIO Printer in mind.  Finally bought it today for 6k from a known vendor who supplies computer products to our company.  This printer retails at 6.7k on Flipkart, so this was an excellent deal.  Some features mentioned below.

    [*]Wireless connectivity.
[*]HP Ink Advantage cartridges (HP 678 Black and Color)
    [*]HP ePrint support.
    [*]Apple Airprint support.
    [*]HP Wireless Direct support.
[*]Automatic print on both sides support.
    [*]Scan through web portal.
[/list]Took a couple of prints and all were good enough.  The automatic print on both sides amazed me as I have seen this only on high end laser printers.  Scanned some old photos and it looks great too.  Printouts fired from my mobile/tablet works fine using the native print support in android 4.4 but the print comes comparatively slower which is probably because it prints on 'Normal' or 'Best' mode and in mobile I couldn't find an option to toggle this.

Overall a pretty solid printer for the price.

LPG cap hiked from 9 to 12; Aadhar-linked subsidy scheme suspended

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 06:52 AM PDT

government on Thursday suspended the ambitious scheme to pay LPG subsidy in cash to consumers directly

Announcing the decision taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily said raising the quota of subsidised LPG to 12 cylinders from nine at present, will cost Rs 5,000 crore in additional subsidy annually."

There were certain issues on implementation on the ground because at places the seeding between Aadhaar number and bank account was not completed. Therefore to ensure that customers are not at inconvenience in the interim it has been decided that a committee will be constituted which will review only the implementation of DBTL. Pending the review, consumer will get subsidised cylinders as he was getting earlier," he said.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 06:35 AM PDT

Since late last year, rumors began firing off about a potential "Transformers" sequel or sequels, and they ran the gamut. Paramount might film two sequels back to back. Michael Bay might return for both. Jason Statham may be the new star. Rumors came and went, but perhaps the biggest question lingered: Will Bay return to direct?

Goodbye BSNL

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 06:14 AM PDT

Goodbye BSNL! I finally have an viable option and can consign my BSNL broadband connection to the garbage. To be honest the service was not too bad - I had the 8 GB @ 2Mbps plan and by and large connectivity was okay. But the speed was never up to the mark. And on the few times I had problems, their customer service was so bad I felt like ripping the phone lines out of th wall. Firstly, they only work from around 10 AM to 5 PM. So what happens if there is a problem outside thosehours and urgent work is held up? And if you do call during working hours, it takes ages for anyone to answer - the average is the phone rings for about 10 minutes. And once you get an asnwer the oeprator is least interested in hearing about the problem - she is in a rush to give you a complaint number and go off.

But what made me decide to finally give BSNL the kick was a couple of weeks ago when the connection kept going on and off every few minutes. After the usual headaches I was able to maek a complaint in the morning. When nothing was done till late afternoon I spent another half an hour tryign to call them again. When I got through and said that nothing had been done about my complaint, the operator said that there is nothing she can do and gave me the number of the local telephoen exchange and said I should phone them. That number was, of course, always busy.

Another ongoing issue with BSL is that at fixed times everyday - aroud 5 PM and 10 AM in my case, the bandwidth dropped considerably. Other sers tell me that this is because BSNL allows public sector clients to use excess bandwidth - its a government to government thing and the hell with private users.

There are other service providers who offer up to 40 GB downlaod (upload not taken into account for calculating usage) at speeds of up to 15 Mbps. There is no reason why anyone should use BSNL. I am happy I got rid of this third rate organization.

Manmohan Singh

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 04:17 AM PDT

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh will hold the additional charge of the Information and Broadcasting ministry during the indisposition of Priyaranjan Dasmunsi. Dasmunsi had been admitted to the hospital following a heart attack last month. He shall continue to hold the rank of a Minister in the Cabinet, but without portfolio. Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma will assist the Prime Minister in handling the I&B Ministry's affairs. Sharma had been asked to take additional charge as Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting on October 18, 2008. A communiqué was issued by President Pratibha Patil to this effect on the advise of Dr Singh, which said the PM will hold charge "during the period of indisposition of Dasmunsi or till such time he is able to resume his work as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting."

BSNL recharge on unlimited plan

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 02:49 AM PDT

Hello,

Just got a evdo prepaid card and SIM. I paid 1199 and they gave free 399 rs amount in the account. I asked them about the unlimited plan and they told me to recharge another 400 rs and it will become unlimited. So I went to paytm website and recharged 400 rs and now the balance is approx 915 rs. But still when I browse, I get SMS like "your balance is deducted so and so"..

If I'm on unlimited plan, why do I receive such sms?

Also how to confirm that I'm in unlimited plan.

when I went to register http://genext.bsnl.co.in/cdmaprepaid , it sent me a PIN number to my CDMA number, but I didn't receive it still, so cant use that site at the moment.

Please help.

Nextra Fiber Broadband Review

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 01:34 AM PDT

This is a short review of Nextra fiber to the home (ftth) broadband for anyone else wondering whether they should take the plunge.
I had earlier thought to wait for a week and then post but seeing how i had time on my hands and how stable and smooth everything is going I am doing it now, will post any negative developments here if they do occur.

Minimum speed offered is a fast 10mbps, i have subscribed to 10mbps 80GB FUP @ 1899 as going further up was mostly a waste for me with just 5 internet sharing devices, with most of the heavy lifting being done by the desktop.
An awesome difference from adsl is upload and download speeds are nearly the same..

Post FUP is a manageable 512kbps up and down...something i griped about a lot with airtel with its 256kbps.
A minor detail is that the fup data is calculated on a prorated basis-Even though i subscribed on the 30th, my billing cycle is 20/19 and the data in my balance was 53.xxGB and not 80 which was to be used till the 19th.
There would also probably be monthly fluctuation for the 30/31/28 days (unlike airtel with constant 80GB).

I was on airtel bb for the last 5 years with speeds progressing from 256kbps to 512 to 2mbps to the final 4mbps (when 8mbps suddenly became feasible for my area faced with competition from nextra) for the last month of its usage.
Airtel was much better than what i had been used to before, but with its own often deeply irritating flaws and crappy experiences. It will not be missed .

Installation

Fiber had already been installed upto my house leading upto an ericsson modem which has outputs to a lot of stuff, the society intercom being one of them.

Installation was just a matter of connecting the ethernet cable to my own WiFi router, registering this router's MAC with nextra (something that needs to be done again if you change your router), and setting the internet connection mode to DHCP.
The tech exec was quick to show up and the connection was up and running within 18 hours of document collection.

You immediately receive a password for the nextraworld website on your registered mobile number.

Initial Issues

Websites sometimes would fail to load and show up as a blank page instead, a deeply irritating issue which will scare you to make any sort of financial transactions with the connection (even though i know there are safeguards in place).
The exec was helpful enough to troubleshoot and gave an assurance it will be fixed within the day. Posted about this on another thread.

The issue seemed to originate with nextra's banner ad injection on webpages sometimes. It was being used to show the customer promotional offers and other information for the connection. Something that I did not like one bit.

Called up the cust care, the operator was quick to understand my problem and did not deny the practice or give any mindless reason like malware. Assured that it would be forwarded to the backend and be deactivated.

Sure enough I received a call from the backend from a well spoken exec and he confirmed my request for disabling this 'feature' a final time and that was the last I saw any injections or that issue of websites not loading.

It has been smooth sailing ever since.

General usage

Pings

I am not an online gamer, I am content with single player mode Dirt 3  so pings are not a very big issue for me.

They are better than airtel, unlike what i stated before in another thread when i hadn't tested so thoroughly.

Below are some comparative shots for a general idea-

Posted Image Posted Image

Posted Image Posted Image

Posted Image Posted Image

Posted Image Posted Image

Speeds

Speed is not very noticeable for lighter websites, though 1080p youtube now plays effortlessly and switches seamlessly to this mode and bitmeter reports full 10mbps when doing so. Something that is very important for me and that rarely happened with airtel.

A 1080p youtube screenshot with bitmeter graph.

Posted Image

Uploading is a similar story, dropbox uploads are speedy as well using nearly all of the bandwidth.
Torrents from IPT yield full speed of 1.1 to 1.2MBps which i use a lot for tv shows (I don't abide by copyright laws for them ).

Stability

The connection is stable as ever but can only comment on this after some time.
I have the modem and router hooked up to an APC home UPS i had lying around uselessly to avoid a disconnect in the time it takes for the society gensets to kick in.
However, I have yet to see its results, the airtel connection would not drop with this setup, not so sure about fiber.

Despite the earlier hiccups nextra did live up to my expectations. Airtel was very cooperative for a change for registering my disconnection request, and it would be done so within the week. Adios airtel.

Bottom line: I can never go back to adsl again!

Need help with Beetel 450TC2 modem

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 11:26 PM PDT

I recently got Beetel 450TC2 wifi-modem with my Airtel internet connection. I can connect to internet via lan wire but they have implemented enterprise wifi security for wireless connectivity. Basically, one has to register his/her devices via their website and only then he/she shall be able to connect to internet. Also it has a limit of only 4 devices via wifi as websites registers MAC of each device. If one has to add a new device he has to de-register previous device. In short it is "crap worthy". I tried to change the wifi authentication mode by login into the modem via 192.168.1.1 but it is locked (uneditable). Is there a custom firmware/ open source firmware/ other tricks that can be used to remove this bullshit authentication mode? Only in India can a company (Read Airtel) sell you broadband at a high cost as well as restrict it usage.
