Hacked my cheap USB hub, now works as Powered HUB

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 12:37 PM PST

of all these days I was using USB hub for only connecting a device but once I moved a couple of things

to this Cheapo Hub, everything was getting connected and then disconnected again and again,

reason was obvious USB power available from Laptop was not enough to drive all these devices together.

So I opened my Rs.100 Hub and inserted a few components and Now Its working fine with multiple devices running at the same time.

Powered by our evergreen Nokia Slim PIN charger  :peaceful:

Now Connecting without any error USB Mouse + android + chill pad (thermal master) + a USB Pen Drive/Laserjet , all together never worked earlier on this HUB, they worked like a charm.

if anyone else here has D.I.Y. itch like I have, please feel free to post your questions.

I used following parts
1 x Blue 3mm L.E.D.
1 x 33 ohm 1/4w resistor
1 x IN4007 Dioide
1 x Nokia power jack (female)

Total cost Rs.5/-

The diode is used in +5V wire coming from PC USB port, so power from external source is not sent back to laptop which would
have resulted in hardware malfunction.

Nokia BL-5C

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 11:22 AM PST

Nokia has issued an Warning that the Batteries BL-5C are going to cause problem to mobiles and also persons if overheated. just read these few lines .. this news is being telecasted on all news channels.. and nokia is goign to replace them if anyone has it.

http://www.nokia.com/batteryreplacement/en/

Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the Nokia-branded BL-5C batteries subject to the product advisory could potentially experience overheating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge. Nokia is working closely with Matsushita and will be cooperating with relevant authorities to investigate this situation.

Dear Nokia Customer,

This is a product advisory for the Nokia-branded BL-5C battery manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006. This product advisory does not apply to any other Nokia battery.

Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the affected batteries could potentially experience over heating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge. Nokia is working closely with relevant local authorities to investigate this situation.

Nokia has several suppliers for BL-5C batteries that have collectively produced more than 300 million BL-5C batteries. This advisory applies only to the 46 million batteries manufactured by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006. There have been approximately 100 incidents of over heating reported globally. No serious injuries or property damage have been reported.

Consumers with a BL-5C battery subject to this advisory should note that all of the approximately 100 incidents have occurred while charging the battery. According to Nokia's knowledge this issue does not affect any other use of the mobile device. Concerned consumers may want to monitor a mobile device while charging that contains a BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory.

While the occurrence in the BL-5C batteries produced by Matsushita in the time-period specified is very rare, for consumers wishing to do so, Nokia and Matsushita offer to replace any BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory.

The BL-5C batteries which are subject to the product advisory were used with the following Nokia models or separately as accessories:

Nokia 1100, Nokia 1100c, Nokia 1101, Nokia 1108, Nokia 1110, Nokia 1112, Nokia 1255, Nokia 1315, Nokia 1600, Nokia 2112, Nokia 2118, Nokia 2255, Nokia 2272, Nokia 2275, Nokia 2300, Nokia 2300c, Nokia 2310, Nokia 2355, Nokia 2600, Nokia 2610, Nokia 2610b, Nokia 2626, Nokia 3100, Nokia 3105, Nokia 3120, Nokia 3125, Nokia 6030, Nokia 6085, Nokia 6086, Nokia 6108, Nokia 6175i, Nokia 6178i, Nokia 6230, Nokia 6230i, Nokia 6270, Nokia 6600, Nokia 6620, Nokia 6630, Nokia 6631, Nokia 6670, Nokia 6680, Nokia 6681, Nokia 6682, Nokia 6820, Nokia 6822, Nokia 7610, Nokia N70, Nokia N71, Nokia N72, Nokia N91, Nokia E50, Nokia E60

"Nokia" and "BL-5C" are printed on the front of the battery. On the back of the battery, the Nokia mark appears at the top, and the battery identification number (consisting of 26 characters) is found at the bottom.

If you are interested to know if your battery is part of this product advisory, please follow the two steps below:

1) Switch off your mobile device and check the battery model. If your battery is not a BL-5C model, you are not included in this product advisory and your product will not be replaced.

2) If your battery is a BL-5C model, remove the battery and check the 26-character identification number from the back of the battery. Enter the identification number in the field below and you will be advised if your battery may be replaced.

Assam wants its own timezone one hour ahead of IST

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 10:24 AM PST

India gets its second time zone as Assam turns its clock ahead by an hour | NDTV.com

Preparations are underway in the north-eastern state to advance clocks an hour ahead of the standard time followed across the country.

"Such a time zone already exists in tea gardens . People will become more energetic and we will save on energy consumption too," state chief minister Tarun Gogoi said.

The government says the logic is simple: in Assam and other north-eastern states, sunrise happens as early as 5 am and it is pitch dark by 5 pm in the winters and a little later in the summers.

So sticking to IST means a loss of daylight hours and a decrease in productivity. For instance, a farmer in Assam is ready to work a good one hour before her or his counterpart in a state like Gujarat.

2 things...

From what I understand, India should have 2-4 timezones based on how wide it is. If not... Why don't they just change office hours from 7-4 instead of 9-6 to boost productivity? :|

Zee Dish TV support people are scammers

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 09:57 AM PST

My uncle shifted his house last week and called DishTV for sending someone to remove the dish and then reinstall. He was quoted 300rs for this.

The guy who came, pulled the wire roughly from the LnB without bothering to unscrew it.

That evening during installation, I happened to be at his new residence. I asked the guy to install the LnB alone on an already existing TataSky dish cabled to the TV port in the hall. The guy tried to con me saying the quality of the signal or strength in his meter is only 50% and he cannot use the LnB, will have to pay 650 for a new one. I told him this is bullshit as it was working perfectly this morning. He then showed me the broken end of the cable that he had pulled claiming the cable was rusted and hence the LnB is bad. I persisted and told him it will work, first fit it and then if it doesnt work will buy.

He said he is unable to even find the signal as it is so bad. I asked him (nicely) to use an existng LnB of his and then replace it with our LnB. On doing this, to his consternation, it worked very well. He kept muttering that we will run into problem etc. Finally he said the fee is not 300 and 425.

I am shocked at this level of fraud and am considering moving out of DishTV to Videocon - as Videocon is cheaper, more HD channels and STB works out free on an annual plan.

I also recall, these a$$holes had made me change my LnB in a similar manner when I called them for adjusting the dish direction a few years back...

Am writing this down so you guys are aware of the level these guys stoop to...

MS staff

There was a pilot flying a small single engine charter plane, with a couple of very important executives on board. He was coming into Seattle airport through thick fog with less than 10m visibility when his instruments went out. So he began circling around looking for landmark. After an hour or so, he starts running pretty low on fuel and the passengers are getting very nervous. Finally, a small opening in the fog appears and he sees a tall building with one guy working alone on the fifth floor. The pilot banks the plane around, rolls down the window and shouts to the guy "Hey! Where am I?" To this, the solitary office worker replies "You're in a plane." The pilot rolls up the window, executes a 275 degree turn and proceeds to execute a perfect blind landing on the runway of the airport 5 miles away. Just as the plane stops, so does the engine as the fuel has run out.

The passengers are amazed and one asks how he did it. "Simple" replies the pilot, "I asked the guy in that building a simple question. The answer he gave me was 100 percent correct but absolutely useless, therefore that must be Microsoft's support office and from there the airport is just a while away."

Is Windows a virus?

No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:
They replicate quickly Okay, Windows does that

Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so okay, Windows does that

Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk Okay, Windows does that, too

Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems Sigh... Windows does that, too

Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware Yup, that's with Windows, too

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature

So, Windows is *not* a virus

Shared new product idea with D2h

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 09:31 AM PST

Dear fellow IFB-ians, I have shared the following new product idea with the Videocon D2h team. Can you please go through the following and help me know if it is a good idea?

Appreciation for good services and a proposal for a new product

Dear Videocon,

I am using your Videcon DTH for quite some time now and I am a fan of your products as well as services.

I am writing this email to share with you a new product idea.
I am not sure at which email ID I can share that is why sharing on customercare@d2h.com, can you please forward this email to the relevant team which can take this request further?

The product I am proposing is triple-in-one offer comprising of the following components in a single console or enclosure:
1. Satellite HD DTH Setup box
2. LED Video Projector (>300 Lumens and WXGA resolution)
3. On board multimedia player (Android)
4. On board stereo audio with decent sound (<6 watts RMS with woofer for good bass)
5. Single RF remote for controlling all these components
- And make it as portable as you can.

Making a product having all the above said feature will help in:
1. Reducing multiple power supplies
2. Reduce redundant electronics components
3. Single remote for all the components
4. Portable product which can be used any where be it a living room, drawing room, lawn or a terrace

I am sure if this product is made available to the consumers in less then 20K INR it will revolutionize the Indian television market in India.

Please do share your feedback if you liked this product idea.

regards,
Sachin

Hathway needs Cable Connection to give Internet?

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 09:26 AM PST

Apologies if duplicate, i did not find a thread which discusses this.

So I wanted a new internet connection in Goregaon East and I applied for Hathway. They Initially they took the form and cheque, and promised to do the installation. However, later they called back and said they cannot install broadband since "I don't subscribe to a cable connection from them". They did, however, promise to refund the money.

This sounds like an extortion scheme to me. As a customer, I should be having a choice to subscribe to internet without subscribing to cable connection (Yes, I know I am in India, but still....). I am not sure if such extortion is even legal?? Just wanted the advice of this forum on if I can do anything (more than angry tweets) to get these horrible guys to do something, or do we just have to take this lying down???

It's now 2 weeks I am trying to get a broadband connection in Goregaon. Can't believe I live in India's biggest metro....

ShopClues makes it extremely hard to delete your user account

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 08:04 AM PST

I was recently prompted by a friend to shop at http://www.shopclues.com/ for their 'Sunday Flea Market'. The items of interest mobile phone covers. There was a code which would get you a cover for Rs 63+ shipping. I created my login then went about selecting the relevant mobile covers, the quantity, added the promo code which showed it was valid. But it did made no difference to the overall billing amount which was Rs 758/-. Now it should have been only 63*2+29=155. So I cancelled y order, I tried again later & got the same result. That was when I decided to delete my a/c but to my shock I could NOT do so, I went thru the FAQ's here's what I found.

'Deactivate my account

Please contact us at shopclues.com/support'

Now this is pasted from their site

But if you go to the above mentioned link there is no way to contact them. When I mentioned this to my friend, he tried from his a/c & it was the same story so he volunteered to post on their FB page (I don't have an a/c) but the shocking thing is that his post can be seen only by him. It cannot be seen by anyone who is not logged in OR by other FB members who can login & go to this page. I am now stuck as

  • I cannot delete my a/c (I find this totally unacceptable)
  • Cannot remove my personal details like name/address/cell no. OR even change those details from their site
  • I cannot communicate with them in any way, if I don't have a pending order with them (I assume this is possible if you have a pending order)
  • If you post on their FB page it's not visible to anyone else. For those who want to check look at their post which says 'Last Sunday of 2013 29th Dec 2013' (I don't want to post their FB post pic here. Don't want to give them free publicity)

So guys I posted about  my experience of this here to caution anyone who is tempted to shop there. :(

Need advice on *FUP* free Internet Connection.

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 07:37 AM PST

Hello everyone! ,

I apologise for any mistakes that i make as i am new to the forums. (But following it from quite some time now.) I am from Kolhapur,Maharashtra and I currently have BSNL wired broadband with the ULD 950 plan.(4 mbps till 8 GB and 512 kbps beyond). I am having no problems with it so far and it has been quite reliable. But i am a type of downloader and 8 Gb is just..* :anger3: *..Those 8 gigs get used up between 2nd/3rd of every month...Video streaming, windows updates, :pirate: ,etc etc you just can't live with 8 gig in this digital age! The 512 kbps post fup speed is a joke.I connect 4 to 5 devices through wifi and 512 is not enough for all these.

Now i seriously need something truly unlimited and i am literally fed up of this fup! There are really not ISP who provide BB at my area. Airtel/Reliance is not present, Docomo is there but my area, although in middle of city,is not feasible! There's no other ISP's and i am unable to know what should i do.Then i come across BSNL EVDO which has a unlimited plan for ₹ 750 and has speeds upto 3.1 mbps.

Should i take a EVDO connection? How will i share the usb connection through wifi? I am a gamer and i know that Evdo, which is through cdma network would give me too good pings. So i would like to keep my current broadband and lower the plan to ULD 525 and then add Evdo for downloading and all that stuff. Is this correct thing to do? Where would i get the evdo data card and modem? Should i buy the modem from BSNL or buy something like micromax/huawei? I have already registered at uddan.bsnl.com for a new evdo connection. Suggestions from you guys are really needed. Thanks in advance!

When will BSNL launch new plans ?

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 07:31 AM PST

hi Guys,

Its frustrating that BSNL is yet to launch truly unlimited 1/2/4 Mbps plans for < 1500Rs. Its perpetually offering 512Kbps speeds from last 4-5 years. Not only that, they are not even offering speed boost say after 6pm like MTNL does. Its not only about downloading torrents. Even if i want to watch Youtube files, I am not able to with 512kbps. They should start offering speed boost to 2/4Mbps at 6pm to 8am slot if offering the same at daytime is not possible. What can we do in this situation ? Can we all raise a CRM ticket at selfcare portal to demand this ?

Sanket.

Nokia Siemens 1600 router doesn't work when Wi-Fi is enabled

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 07:05 AM PST

Hi Everyone,

I am facing a problem with my Nokia Siemens 1600 router ( 4 years old).

Scenario 1:

Ethernet Cable plugged to the router + Wi-Fi is enabled

When the Ethernet cable is plugged into the router and also when Wi-Fi is enabled (Wi-Fi enabling/disabling through http://192.168.1.1),  all the LED's except Power LED goes off. Then DSL will be blinking for few minutes and it will turn off... again it will blink and goes off.. this cycle repeats without making any internet connection.

Scenario 2:

Ethernet Cable unplugged from the router and Wi-Fi is enabled

When the Ethernet cable is not plugged into the router and when Wi-Fi is enabled modem will be connected to Internet and I can surf the internet through my smartphone without any disconnection.

Scenario 3:

Ethernet Cable plugged to the router and Wi-Fi is disabled

When the Ethernet cable is plugged into the router and Wi-Fi is disabled then I can access Internet from my PC without any interruption in connection.

Bottom Line of my problem is I cant use Wi-Fi through my smartphone and Internet through PC at the same time.

Either one must be disabled to get the other working.

Please help me. What is the Problem here. I couldn't find out.

I am unable to get any help from BSNL people. They simply closes my complaint without solving.

FTTH from early 2014 by BBNL

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 06:46 AM PST

A BBNL technician recently told me that FTTH will be introduced soon ( possibly by Jan/Feb 2014 ).

With 'fiber to the home' I am hoping consistent speed ,bettery quality and hopefully lesser down times.

Existing modem will be replaced with a fiber optic modem and the technician says it would be a free replacement. He also said that faster speed plans apart from the current max of 10 mbps ( unlimited download ) are also in the anvil.

Cheers to BBNL!

Currently on a 10 mbps( unlimited download ) plan.

Internet down since this morning, anyone else with same problem?

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 05:18 AM PST

Hi,

I'm on an MTNLMumbai 999 Unlimited connection and I usually have no problems with my net. But today morning, when i tried to access the net, nothing seems to be connecting. I'm trying to figure out if anyone else is having these issues and what I can do to resolve it.

Here's what I've tried so far:

Opened router page: Page opens with speed details, SNR, etc. but the status is showing 'not connected'. Specifically, the IP address, Gateway, and DNS fields are 0.0.0.0

Pinged gateway and IP: Both pings were successful. DNS server pings were not though.

Restarted PC a few times: No luck

So far, i've logged a complaint on MTNL's website but I don't know what else to do. Can someone help me out? Should I call up the exchange or something?

I'm connected to the Union Park exchange and I can't seem to find the exchange number to call them.

As for the Lenovo S930, that has the same etched body style as the Vibe Z, but fits in a 6-inch 1280 x 720 display instead. It has a MediaTek quadcore processor and is 8.7mm thick, however, with stereo speakers and Dolby Digital Plus audio.

The Lenovo S650 has the same processor, thickness, and styling, but gets a 4.7-inch 960 x 540 display instead. Both the S650 and S930 have an 8-megapixel main camera with flash and 8GB of internal storage, as well as dual-SIM for having two SIM cards in a single phone.

Finally, the A859 slots somewhere in-between, with a 5-inch 1280 x 720 IPS LCD display. It too gets a MediaTek processor – in this case the 6582 – running Android 4.2, along with an 8-megapixel camera, 8GB of internal storage, and a 9.2mm thick chassis that Lenovo will offer in black or white.
