AT&T Sponsored Data Platform

AT&T Thumbs Nose at Net Neutrality With 'Sponsored' Bandwidth Scheme | Threat Level | Wired.com

AT&T announced a new scheme today that allows app-makers and websites to pay for the bandwidth you consume using their services — a move digital rights activists say breaches the spirit of net neutrality. AT&T, however, touts the program as a "win-win" for business and consumers. Ralph de la Vega, the company's chief executive, says applications with a "sponsored data" icon will allow consumers to "know the data related to that particular application or video is provided as part of their monthly service."Other wireless carriers are likely to follow suit, Bergmayer said. Verizon was reportedly in talks last year with ESPN over a similar program.

Applying for 100 Mbps 5299 Plan. (175GB)

Please advise if I should get Airtel ? and which router/modem?

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 08:25 AM PST

Hi all,

I stay in Thakur Village, Kandivali (E), Mumbai. I have been using MTNL triband for the past 3 months, and I am frustrated. I used to have Hathway as well, but had billing problems with them as well.

Long story short, I am contemplating Airtel broadband - "New Turbo 25GB ( 4mbps - upto 25GB - 512kbps later @1199/-pm).

My questions:

1. How is the performance of Airtel broadband in Thakur Village/kandivali ?. I have been reading mixed reviews and confused how will it perform in the area where I stay.

2. I have a 4BHK, and I was thinking of getting TP Link TD-8968 Modem Router. Will it work with Airtel?

The reason I am thinking of purchasing this, inspite Airtel guys saying I will get a free wifi router is because I want good coverage throughout my house.

I am confused between 3 models :

  http://www.flipkart.com/router/compare?ids=RTRD4KY4UNGYCZFG,RTRDET9AGHDZE6HM,RTRDGGQ754BDWH7U

Which one should I buy? Or should I stick with the free one, and only buy if not satisfied with the free one?

3. What does the antenna capacity - MIMO/3dbi/5dbi compare when coverage is concerned. Which is better?

Thanks.

My experience with ACT BB

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 08:21 AM PST

Feedback whether positive or negative should be passed to the appropriate person. That's what I believe in.

This is the timeline of how my installation experience has been with ACT BB.

11 Nov-2013 - I applied for a new ACT BB connection today in Kundanahalli Gate, Bangalore. I will keep you posted on the developments.

11-Nov-2013 - Cheque payment made to Sales executive, Babu Reddy, details filled on form and submitted to him.
ETA - 3 days for wiring and connection to be activated.

12-Nov-2013 -
I got a call from ACT technician today that cabling would be done by end of the day. Got a confirmation call from Customer Care at 1543 hrs, IST today that connection will be activated in 2 days. So far, so good.

12-Nov-2013 - At 1616 hrs, IST I receive a call from Mukund who is the ACT technician saying that the wiring has been completed to my apartment on the third floor and i would be receiving a call today at 1700 hrs, IST for username and password. Mukund confirms that I can use my internet connection from tonight.

I would term this as awesome service from an installation perspective, although I would have to wait and watch how stable the connection is post installation.

12-Nov-2013 -
Cabling has been completed and just received the credentials for my broadband account at 2059 hrs, IST through email and the registered mobile number. A confirmation call was made from the customer care before the account got activated.I am still out, so I gotta go and check how the connection is. I will keep you posted.

I have connected the cable from ACT BB to my Netgear WGR614 router.

http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/netgear-wgr614-54-mbps/4505-3319_7-21218238.html

In case, someone wants to have the contact details of the sales person & field engineer of ACT for Kundalahalli area, let me know.

Speed test shows rocking upload and download speeds. I am on Act Force plan.

3096404549.png

12-Nov-2013 1159, IST - First level checks indicate amazing speeds with YouTube where I can watch videos without buffering in Full HD.

I will keep posting various workloads I consider to be bandwidth intensive and would update this thread.

Any downtime or disconnections will also be reported.

ShopClues makes it extremely hard to delete your user account

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 08:16 AM PST

I was recently prompted by a friend to shop at http://www.shopclues.com/ for their 'Sunday Flea Market'. The items of interest mobile phone covers. There was a code which would get you a cover for Rs 63+ shipping. I created my login then went about selecting the relevant mobile covers, the quantity, added the promo code which showed it was valid. But it did made no difference to the overall billing amount which was Rs 758/-. Now it should have been only 63*2+29=155. So I cancelled y order, I tried again later & got the same result. That was when I decided to delete my a/c but to my shock I could NOT do so, I went thru the FAQ's here's what I found.

'Deactivate my account

Please contact us at shopclues.com/support'

Now this is pasted from their site

But if you go to the above mentioned link there is no way to contact them. When I mentioned this to my friend, he tried from his a/c & it was the same story so he volunteered to post on their FB page (I don't have an a/c) but the shocking thing is that his post can be seen only by him. It cannot be seen by anyone who is not logged in OR by other FB members who can login & go to this page. I am now stuck as

  • I cannot delete my a/c (I find this totally unacceptable)
  • Cannot remove my personal details like name/address/cell no. OR even change those details from their site
  • I cannot communicate with them in any way, if I don't have a pending order with them (I assume this is possible if you have a pending order)
  • If you post on their FB page it's not visible to anyone else. For those who want to check look at their post which says 'Last Sunday of 2013 29th Dec 2013' (I don't want to post their FB post pic here. Don't want to give them free publicity)

So guys I posted about  my experience of this here to caution anyone who is tempted to shop there. :(

Speed doesn't kick back to normal after it's 1st day of a new month

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 07:57 AM PST

I had to start a new thread because I'm having this trouble EVERY SINGLE TIME I bust the FUP, the speed just doesn't revert to normal on the 1st day of a new month (it takes a few days). The customer care haven't a clue what's happening, sometimes they say they are aware but then then they also say it's going to be taken care of in couple hours.

I tried logging in and out multiple times at different times but it just doesn't work eh?

Firstly, frustration hits bottom right after that limit and your speed plummets down to a snail's, so there's no youtube, no porn and facebook takes a bunch of minutes to show a notification, it makes you feel like you went back in time to use a dial up. Secondly, when you're painfully waiting for that first day of the new month, and when the speed stays the same, you really want to beat someone up.

Is it just me or what? Cause I haven't read a thread stating a problem like this.

It's 1st today and my speed is still messing about < 512kbps.

ACT, you need to deal with it soon, I do not think it's NOT beyond your control.

Personally, I think ACT should look into an idea like Airtel's Smartbytes. It's really cool. You pay to buy data and speed between the time that you hit the FUP and the end of the billing-cycle, it helps all the time.

I don't understand these bad reviews about ACT!

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 07:55 AM PST

Seriously people, is ACT that bad?

Here is what went with me.

Before going for ACT I had made up my mind to go with BSNL's EVDO as I had read all these bad reviews about ACT. I went to BSNL's CSC and they made me visit their place for continuous 4 days without any progress about the connection. After that, leaving BSNL aside, here is how ACT worked for me,

Day 1 - 24/06/2013 : I called up ACT's number and they registered my details
Day 2 - 25/06/2013 : ACT's guy came and took the money.
Day 3 - 26/06/2013 : I called the sales guy (the one who took money) and asked whether it was possible to get the set up today and he replied it could be possible or I would it get for sure within 3 days as promised. Within an hour a technician was at my place set up the connection!
Day 4 - 27/06/2013 : I got a message about my documents being accepted and another message that my connection could be active within 10 days. After 3 hours, ACT's guy called up and verified my details and gave username/password and my connection was active!

Speed is as promised and ping is good enough to play Counter Strike.

I don't know anything about down times and stuff yet. But so far ACT's service wasn't as unprofessional as many people here have complained about getting a new connection.

I'll keep updating about the disconnections, down times and after sales stuff. For the record, I stay in Malleshwaram.

Beware, ACT downgrades your speed before reaching FUP Limit, It happened twice to me. Who's next?

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 07:46 AM PST

ACT Customer id               :  10598129

My Oct,2013 month usage : 54.18 GB

My FUP limit                       : 60 GB (ACT Indulge plan)

My speed was reduced to 512 Kbps on Oct 27th and again on December 29th even before reaching FUP Limit.

I called customer care several times. They said the usage details are ''delayed" by 24 Hrs and
I may have reached the FUP Limit at server (Pathetic and I accepted because I don't have proofs)

I've proofs with the total usages which I got from "My usage". Every time when my usage is around 54GB, my speed goes to 512Kbps

I've suffered with Low Speeds. from 25 Mbps to 512 Kbps even before reaching FUP Limit???

Guys! Beware of ACT or if you already have ACT, keep watching your "My Usage"

Phone around 16K

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 07:09 AM PST

Yeah yeah I know many threads exist already.
My mom wants to replace her old Nokia phone. Her requirements are:

Video conferencing via Skype/Tango
Using the following:
SBI Mobile app
ICICI mobile app
Airtel mobile app
WhatsApp
Calling and texting.

I guess only Android phones apply cause of the app restrictions, not sure though.
Screen size should not exceed 4.7
And budget is 16K ish.
Also Indian brands are a last resort.

Any ideas? Cause we want to buy in the Diwali sales by FK and others.

And oh yes I'll be rooting it after warranty goes and updates stop.

Assigned IP's and Gateway .

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 07:03 AM PST

Question 1 :
Hello folks ,

I am on BSNL ULD800 Plan . I am just curious to know more about IP and gateway . Sometime I get IP in 59.x.x.x and some times 117.x.x.x. .
Pings are good in both the cases (Now during day time also I always get <100ms ) .
So basically I want to ask that why we get IP's in only these 2 ranges only ? And yes whenever I get 59 range IP my gateway starts from 59 and same as in case of 117 . What does the gateway do ? Does it acts as a door between Regional Network and WAN or it is something placed in Exchange/DSLAM which just guides the route further ?

P.S. : Last year I noticed that when we touch the FUP Limit our IP starts from 59 and during normal case it starts from 117 .

Question 2 :

My friend lives in Dehradun . We play CS online via Steam . But I get 50ms and he gets 120ms ping in Indian Servers .When I viewed his line stats and tracert via Team viewer , I found that the route is being completed by crossing "chennai.vsnl.net.in" and then comes to Mumbai (Server Location) .
Whereas i get less ping coz there is no "Chennai" in between and the route directly goes to mumbai.vsnl.net.in where the Sv is located .So my Question is , is their any way we can make the route complete without crossing chennai ? I mean any way which directly connect him to Mumbai sv without bypassing Chennai ?

P.S.: May be I am not 100% correct with my analysis but still I think I am quite near to correctness . Because his ping rises to 30ms after crossing chennai .

Low speed for overseas content

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 06:08 AM PST

My internet speed on Airtel broadband gets greatly reduced when I access content located on a geographically far off server. I'm on 4 mbps plan which should be good enough to watch non-HD videos and more than good for skype video. Videos from sites like Comedy Central buffer 90% of the time and play for 10%, and my video calls to relatives in US are pathetic in quality. I verified my experience using speedtest also. Using a local server on speedtest.net, I get full 4 mbps results most of the time. But select a remote server based in US, Europe or Singapore etc., immediately the speed goes down, sometimes down to 100 kbps.

Are any of you also having a similar experience and is there an explanation for this?

thanks,

gaurav

Reviews of older movies

Just a simple thread where you can put in the movies you think are worth watching. Linking to the Wikipedia and IMDB page would be useful as well.

I would start with: Fight Club (English)

Beetel 110TC1 keeps restarting

Posted: 09 Jan 2014 04:20 AM PST

I have an Airtel Broadband connection and I'm encountering a problem with the modem. The modems keeps restarting randomly while browsing. It works fine for a few minutes and then I suddenly get a balloon notification in the system tray saying "A network cable has been unplugged".

After this notification shows up, all the lights of the modem except the "Power" one turn off and I have to turn the modem off and turn it on again. Sometimes it works, or I have to wait for a few more minutes and keep turning it on and off again till it works properly.

I've noticed that the frequency of this problem is more AFTER I've exceeded my Data Limit of 8GB and keep getting redirected to the Airtel SmartBytes page or when the bill cycle is nearing it's end. The modem works fine when a new bill cycle and starts happening after a few days from the start.

So I called the Airtel helpline and they said they would send over a technician and I got a complaint number. The technician showed up the next day and waited for an hour at my house. For this one hour, the modem was working perfectly so he said that there is nothing wrong and he closed the complaint. The moment he closed the complaint, I got a notification on my mobilethat the complaint was closed. I turned on my PC for browsing later that day and the modem gave me the same problem again.

So I called Airtel again and told them to send over a technician again and they gave me a new complaint number and said that a technician would arrive the next day. After they gave me the complaint number the modem started working properly again and the technician said there was nothing wrong with it and closed the complaint.(WTF?????)

As before, the moment the complaint was closed, the problem started again. This can't be a coincidence.

So basically I want to know why is it that every time I call a technician, the modem starts working properly by itself and the moment the complaint is closed, the modem keeps giving me problems?

PS:

I had an Airtel connection 2 years ago and had the Beetel 110TC1 model at that time. I changed over to Tata Photon Plus but I wasn't happy with the service and switched back to Airtel about 5 months back. They offered me a new modem but I told them that I had the old modem and I don't need a new one. Is the problem because the modem is too old? Please advice me.

Stay away from ACT, Jayanagar 4th T Block, ACT is shameless.

To whom it may concern,

I've been using ACT for a long time, it started off well, kept me happy for a few months and then ACT got shameless and they just don't care about anything anymore. You are doing an atrocious job.

So I'm putting it out for people to warn that you SHOULD stay away from ACT, trust me, they just don't care whatever you do. You don't pay, they don't care, you shout on the phone, they don't care, you are nice to them, they don't care. So yea, looks like they made of customers and are stealing their money anyway thus the shamelessness.

Please think upteen times before you call them and say you want a connection.

We have 3 connections alone running in my house, these are the phone numbers registered

1. 974036895x
2. 953804999x
3. 990091029x

I've been having serious problems with the internet, we all use it often and there are disconnections every other alternate day, No kidding. Nobody, I repeat, NOBODY attends to us. What is your problem really in this area? Why don't the technicians attend ASAP? They take days to come and fix a problem when you call, and then the next day, it disconnects and then nobody hears you out.

I've been thinking, you should remove the "GOOD" testimonials off your website and replace them with what we write here.

I still have Airtel running in my house, I'm glad this has been my backup, now if you guys don't attend/call me the moment you read this mail, I'm going to have this connection disconnected since it's been really useless for me. I can't keep paying for services that aren't attended.
I'm not going to pay the month's bill because, I see that that's the only way I get get your attention and have you called.

Shame on you, ACT.

If they can maintain the speed 24hours it would be great :)

STV used: Rs55 Unlimited

On website its written 1day unlimited but those who have used it  might know already that its 2days unlimited

BSNL still the best in Wireless Broadband :D No TataPhoton, Mblaze or Reliance Netconnect can beat BSNL EVDO :P
