4G Bands / Frequencies.

Posted: 10 Nov 2013 12:21 PM PST

Which Bands / Frequencies will be used by Mobile Operators in India for their 4G Services?

Reason for asking : I want to upgrade my phone & would like to get the one with 4G Option.  There are more than 1 variants available for each model offering different bands / frequencies in each variant. I don't want to get the one with 4G but will not be able to use due to incompatible Band / Frequency!

TP-Link TL-WR740N configuration for Hathway Broadband

Posted: 10 Nov 2013 10:55 AM PST

Hi Guys, I recently got a Hathway connection. I bought a TP-Link TL-WR740N router separately as it available for Rs. 890/- on amazon.in (who delivered it to me in 18 hours!!!) whereas the provider was charging me Rs. 2000/- for it. So this was clearly a good decision but now I am stuck with configuring the router :(:( It obviously did seem quite straight forward which is why I thought I would do it myself. I have chosen PPPoE and entered the right username and password I went into the advanced section in the WAN section and provided the service name provided to me. The problem is the router is not getting connected to the internet. When I check the system log on the router it shows me a bad username and password. I have rechecked the credentials and they work fine for me over Ethernet So I know that is not the problem. Can someone tell me if I am missing something.

ACT Broadband - Application and Installation Experience

Posted: 10 Nov 2013 10:17 AM PST

Hello Forum Members,

I joined this forum to share my experience with ACT Broadband. I recently moved into my new apartment and prior to moving in I did a lot of research on the internet service providers in the area since I do a lot of work from home. Luckily I found out that ACT Broadband has coverage in my area and I called them up. On 2nd of November (Chota Diwali) there person came to collect the documents and payment at whichever time I specified. He very clearly said that since that was a Diwali weekend, my connection will get activated latest by Wednesday. He also mentioned that my apartment allready has a DP installed hence it would not be a problem at all.

Now comes, 5th of October, Tuesday. I get a call early in the morning from the installation guy from ACT asking for my available time for the wiring. He was very prompt and punctual. It took a total of 15 mins to complete the wiring and he tested the connection and gave the demo. He also said that latest by 6th my connection will get activated and it did.

I have not yet got a chance to test the full potential of the connection, however I can say one thing for sure, after reading multiple reviews in this forum, I was skeptical about the initial response of the company, but to my surprise, they were really well behaved and prompt in their response.

Total time it took for me to get the connection: 4 days

Total calls made to ACT: 3 (including calling the sales guy)

I will post review about the speed and QOS later.

PS: I am on the 15 MBps / 40 GB plan.

Bsnl 750 Uld Plan Speed Changes?

Posted: 10 Nov 2013 10:06 AM PST

I am using BSNL broadband, I've used above 8 GB and according to the plan I should be getting 512 Kbps or 0r 0.50 Mbps. But when I am testing my speed I am getting 1.27 Mbps or 1300.48 Kbps.

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3026338887

Wow, maybe it is bypassing the FUP's restrictions. Now no one attends the call when calling to 1500.Why is it giving that much speed?

Tizen Updates

Posted: 10 Nov 2013 09:09 AM PST

MeeGo is dead: Meet Tizen, another new open source OS based on Linux | This is my next...

The Linux Foundation will host the project, and a steering group lead by Intel and Samsung will lead the development of Tizen. Also joining the effort is the LiMo Foundation, a dedicated consortium with shared leadership and decision making consisting of ACCESS, Panasonic Mobile, NEC Casio, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung, SK Telecom, Telefonica, and Vodafone.

What the F.

I understand the need to stop reliance upon Android because of the Google factor. But seriously... Samsung? How many mobile platforms are they going to support!

Airtel UI getting laggy each day. Thanks to HQ Ads within UI

Posted: 10 Nov 2013 07:43 AM PST

Its already been discussed and its seems they have become even more bolder each day with numerous ads within the UI , as if the Channels themselves are devoid of it.

The Ads has taking more space than the actual information which UI needs to provide.

Of late , the menu UI has become so laggy , it now takes a solid 1-2 seconds to actually change a channel or use the UI.

I am planning to open a "Bounty" Thread for anyone who can mod the UI and install a custom Firmware , something like firmware with ad-blocker , we do have a USB port in the back.

MTNL Broadband VDSL2 User Experiences

Posted: 10 Nov 2013 06:01 AM PST

I wanted to start a new experience thread simply to discuss MTNL VDSL.

Some things to consider before/after taking a new VDSL connection

SNR margins (SNRM)
Below 9 dB : Poor experience with lots of HEC and CRC errors. Line will disconnect frequently.
9   - 11  dB : Ok but not ideal. Disconnections will be there if some unexpected variance is introduced by rains, humidity in the wire.
12 - 16  dB : Ideal and realistic value. Expect almost no disconnections as the line has more wiggle room for tolerating variances.
17 dB and up : God Mode. Lucky few get this on VDSL synced at 30 mbps and up. So far I have seen various stats and no one has reported this SNRM (That is because VDSL sync rates are always higher)

Higher you sync rate, lower the SNRM will be. Lower the SNRM, lower the connection reliability. Lower reliability means frequent disconnections. Hence ISP's have a setting in DSLAM to artificially increase SNRM value for a particular phone line. Hence you sync at lower rate and line automagically becomes stable.

Attenuation may not be that important after all. It reduces sync speeds over a distance but is not an indicator of connection reliability. (You can roughly calculate your line length from it. Do it here)

Apply for VDSL connection only if you are within half km. Otherwise you will get ADSL like sync rates.

I will update this entry with some of our findings. Since VDSL is somewhat new to India, this thread can help some early adopters.

Currently the speeds are decent for fast servers. But single streams are slow due to a bottleneck somewhere.

Tikona Broadband User Experiences

Posted: 10 Nov 2013 12:22 AM PST

Thought I would start another thread for people who have actually used this service to describe their experience.

They have started advertising quite heavily in Bombay and their plans seem pretty decent. Their 600kbps UL plan would be excellent for me.

I really like the way they have bill limits for their limited plans as well. That shows they understand consumer concerns about enormous bills and have designed their plans to allay them.

So how good is their service? Any down time? How quickly do they respond to complaints? Really any information from people who have used Tikona would be appreciated.

EA Increasing PC Game Prices in India

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 09:50 PM PST

Source: http://www.mcvindia.com/news/read/indian-gamers-react-to-ea-pc-price-hike-with-eapcindia-campaign/

Indian PC gamers have taken to Facebook and Twitter to air their discontent at the rising prices of EA's PC games.

Using the #EAPCIndia hashtag, designed to give Indian gamers a single platform to make themselves heard on the issue, gamers continue to share their opinions on the matter. While some question the reasoning behind the dramatic hike, others see it as a move that will push most PC gamers back towards piracy.

EA announced a couple of days ago that it will price FIFA 14 at Rs 2,499 and Battlefield 4 and Need for Speed: Rivals at Rs 3,499. That's up from last year's price of Rs 1,499 – a 66% to 133% hike.

The reasoning behind the hike is that EA would like prices for its PC games around the world to be the equivalent of $60, for various reasons. The primary reason is that gamers outside India have been able to gain VPN access to the India Origin store and take advantage of lower Indian prices. This was a major issue during the release of Battlefield 3 Premium and it prompted EA to stop preorders on the Indian store. But the issue came up again following the release of SimCity, which resulted in the game being pulled and then re-released at a higher price. It seems quite harsh for EA to penalise the Indian market for Origin's technical deficiencies. Steam has been quite successful in cracking down on users who abuse the system to circumvent region locks in such a way.
