Petrol Pumps would sell cooking gas cylinders in India

Posted: 05 Oct 2013 01:07 PM PDT

http://www.readability.com/articles/29ndbwqj

Now, pick up your cooking gas cylinder with minimum fuss at a petrol pump. Five kg cylinders will now be available at selected company owned petrol pumps as part of a pilot scheme - and all you need is a valid identity card. For now the facility will initially be available in just 11 outlets in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore on a pilot basis.
This is a new initiative from the government - cutting out some of the paper work and making it easier to get hold of an LPG gas cylinder. The cylinders are not subsidised - and the first cylinder would cost Rs 1000 plus taxes and regulator costs - and almost Rs 500 for a refill.

MTNL Mumbai Unltd 450 Plan Speed Boost withdrawn

A quick update for those who havent noticed:

MTNL has withdrawn the speed boost from the Unltd 450 plan - no more 1-2 mbps speeds at night, its all 512kbps now.

They didnt even announce any changes. I only noticed it because I stopped getting the extra speed this month and decided to check their plans page.

Toyota Innova Updates

Posted: 05 Oct 2013 11:41 AM PDT

Toyota has been one of the big surprises of the Indian Automobile Industry. They happen to be one of THE most recognized auto brands in India. And when they entered the Indian market, they came with the unlikeliest of models in Toyota Qualis. The Multi Utility Vehicle was at least 2 generations old but became one of the biggest success stories of its category in India.

Later came the luxury models from the Japanese Marquee in the form of Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla, which made a name for itself in their respective classes. Just recently, the company came up with another shock for the Indian customer. Looking at the updated model from the competition in the form of Chevrolet Travera from GM, they decided to replace Qualis with a highly advanced model in the form of Innova!

Kumar Sangakkara will have to choose between playing for Kandurata Maroons and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the upcoming Champions League T20 in India, after Sri Lanka Cricket have expressed a strong desire for him to represent Kandurata in the tournament. SLC has gone as far as seeking legal counsel on whether they can ask Sangakkara to play for Kandurata, even if it will effectively cost both Sangakkara and the board significant sums of money if he plays for his local team.

Strike back

Posted: 05 Oct 2013 10:58 AM PDT

Synopsis:
Strike Back: Project Dawn, as it is known in the United Kingdom (or just Strike Back in the United States) is a ten-part British-American action serial television series, and the follow up series of Strike Back. However the only cast member to return from the original series was Richard Armitage in his cameo appearance. It was a co-production between British broadcaster, BSkyB (for Sky1) and American premium cable broadcaster, HBO (for Cinemax). The series follows the actions of Section 20, a secret branch of the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6).

My opinion:
This show is better than it needs to be. A season has 10 episodes, with a mission per 2 episodes taking place in different locations around the world. There will be a overarching story connecting the 10 episodes. It's like watching 5 decent action movies shot within a TV budget. They still use the locations very well. The action is well choreographed. Being a cinemax (skinimax) show, you can sense the nudity around the corner but it's not really gratuitous like in Starz shows. The first UK season only has 6 episodes but I didn't watch that season. It was revamped in the second season called Strike Back: Project Dawn. I only started watching the show from the second season. The first 2 episodes in Strike Back: Project Dawn takes place in India.

The 2-hour premiere of the third season called Strike Back: Vengeance premiered last Friday.

Why this thread?

So often, we have some random thought or point to make/discuss , and I personally sometimes skip it as I feel it is not worthy of a new thread & feel its unfair to hijack an existing thread...

Would recommend creating new thread for any big news & as usual we have threads for specific series/tournaments.. This is for something general random posts related to cricket...Kind of the Cricket Offtopic thread...

Will start with one post

Had no idea that Indian media was a key institution of democracy

Posted: 05 Oct 2013 10:47 AM PDT

The Broadcast Editors' Association finds Gujarat Chief Minister Mr Narendra Modi's statement against Indian media at a public rally in New Delhi today as objectionable. The BEA believes that such statement aims at demeaning Indian media, which is a key institution of democracy.

The Broadcast Editors' Association is disturbed at the attempt to project Indian media team visiting the UN in a poor light. Mr Narendra Modi's statement has been made without knowing the full facts of the matter and without realizing the dignified role media is expected to play at international fora.

The BEA would like to assure all that Indian media understands its responsibility and also it's code of conduct.

Broadband suggestion for Raipur Chhattisgarh

Posted: 05 Oct 2013 07:17 AM PDT

I used to live in Lakhe Nagar in Raipur but recently shifted to Changorabhata. I was using Airtel in Lakhe Nagar but now it is not available here. Applied for BSNL but they kept saying there is problem, even I was willing to give extra cash to lineman but they didnt gave connection. Called Tikona, their installer checked and said signal is weak (8 dB was available while minimum is 20 dB). Now can anyone please tell me how is the service of bsnl evdo and wimax in Raipur specially in Changorabhata. I applied online for evdo, they called and I asked for demo but he said demo is not available. Does anyone knows about signal of evdo or wimax in raipur. Please reply as soon as possible.

lenovo thinkpad versus other lenovos?

Posted: 05 Oct 2013 07:05 AM PDT

Hi everyone,
I can get a non Thinkpad
Lenovo for 23,000 rupees. The dealer didn't tell me which model it was but it's dual core, 3rd generation, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 15inch screen, battery that lasts 3hrs.

PLUS a lifetime FREE subscription to Eset smart security six antivirus for as long as I'm in this particular state in India. If I move to another state or move to the US, as I hope to do in a couple of years, I will have to pay something.

I don't need a large HDD, so that's fine. I need the laptop only for word processing and the internet. No gaming or programming or photoshop, so I don't need high configurations like i5 and i7, which are prohibitively expensive in India.

OR I can get a second-hand Lenovo Thinkpad that is nearly 2 years old for about the same price. These are the specs according to the ad:

Lenovo ThinkPad L420 Laptop / Intel Core i3 / 14.1" Display / 2GB RAM / 320GB HD

Processor Speed:2.10 GHz

Model:ThinkPad L420RAM:2 GB

Operating System:Windows Home 7

HDD:320 GBScreen

Size:14.1"

Colour:Black

Processor:Intel Core i3 (3rd Generation) i3-2310M

Warranty:No Warranty

Bought this laptop in Jan 2012. In perfect working condition. 14.1 TFT, DVD dual layer writeable, wi-fi, great touchpad, and all others in a perfect working condition. Excellent battery -- lasts for 7 hours with movie playing / gaming.

****

That was the ad. The advertiser told me that though he installed Windows he has always worked in Linux and therefore has not had any virus problem. Naturally we worry that any old laptop will have viruses.

He did offer to format and reinstall everything. He also said he can offer me a licensed copy of win 8 and Word for free.

I'm wondering which of the above I should buy. Can you please help me decide by answering my questions:

1. I'm a writer; I write on the computer all day long. I need something that will work well if used 12 to 14 hours a day. Would the new laptop give much better service than the 2 year old one even if the older one is a thinkpad?

2. does a thinkpad on average last more years than any ordinary laptop, or any other lenovo laptop? I can't afford to buy a new machine every couple of years. I want something that will last at least 5 to 7 years. My old desktop lasted 9 years, and I used it all day long.

If the thinkpad lasts longer than other laptops, then it might have as many years in it left as a new laptop, even if it has lost two years of its life already.

3. the advertiser says the battery lasts for 7 hours. Someone told me that after a couple of years, all batteries last half as long as they used to. Does this mean the used thinkpad's battery is now not likely to last 7 hours as the advertiser claims?

But even if it lasts 4 or 5 hours, that would still be better than the mere 3 hours the  new laptop will run on battery.

If I buy a new battery for the thinkpad, will it last 7 hours or do all laptops lose the ability to run long on batteries over the years?

4. will a new dual core, 3rd generation processor be faster or slower than a two year old i3 3rd generation processor?

5. The advertiser said the reason the price was high was that Lenovo thinkpad was unbreakable. You could throw it out of a moving car and it would survive. Now I have no intention of throwing it out of a moving car, but accidents happen and it would be nice to know nothing would happen to it if I accidentally dropped it while carrying it from place to place.

So is it true the thinkpad will survive falls while ordinary lenovos won't?

I'm sorry this post is so long. Thanks so much to anyone who can answer even some of my questions.

Frequent Disconnection / ADSL blinking Issue on MTNL Broadband

Posted: 05 Oct 2013 06:29 AM PDT

Hi,

I am a user of 849NU plan of MTNL Triband service since August based out of Navi Mumbai.

All of August, i was very happy to have a lovely connection and good speeds, with a pretty good tariff.
But now since the past 15 days I am suffering from very intermittent net connection.
Although I am connected to the internet, sometimes the webpages take ages to open, and never open, while at other times it opens instantly. Also downloading has the same pattern, sometimes I get very good speeds of upto 200 Kbps, while other times there is no download. Although all download sites show good Triband Speed, but it is the intermittent connection that is the problem.
This problem has crept up in the last 15 odd days, and I have tried everything but no change has been noticed.

Has anyone else faced a similar problem, and if yes, whats the work around. The people at MTNL classify this as a slow connection problem, but that is exactly not the issue, as I do get good speeds intermittently.

Somebody please help me.

Competent broadband isp in navi mumbai?

Posted: 05 Oct 2013 05:46 AM PDT

According to you, who is the best Broadband provider in Navi Mumbai (Vashi)?

I did try searching the forum and Google before resorting to asking in the forum, but the only results were from many years back. And services constantly keep changing, so I wanted updated information.

I'm currently using SSV D-Voishit, which I have regretted getting the same day I applied for the connection because of the unprofessionalism. Unfortunately, I'm new here from the maincity and I made the mistake of believing the fake reviews on Sulekha. I'm disgusted with the service, and the net has worked for a total of only 3 times in over a week. I have had to call the so called "engineers" every single day, and no one has ever picked their "customer support" number.

To make a long ugly story short. I desperately want to cancel the SSV connection as soon as possible. I need another better service provider with a minimum of 1-2 Mbps and an unlimited plan. I make extensive use of the internet and price shouldn't be a problem with me as long as the ISP can guarantee 100% up-time and fast speeds. I require a ethernet connection for now. And I can't apply for a landline so I think MTNL is out of the question. Also, taking into concern the recent developments of government censoring the internet, I'd like a provider who gave me full access to the internet.

Please do help a friend out, guys. And thanks in advance!

Does anyone know about ion broadband, navi mumbai?

Posted: 05 Oct 2013 05:22 AM PDT

Does anyone here know about ion broadband? I saw their ad in Times of Navi Mumbai, but there was no mention of any plan. Just their CC number and their site http://i-on.in/. I guess they have a tie-up with SSV.

Since Hayai is taking a long time to complete their pending connections, thought about ion.

Their unlimited plan rates for 30 days, as mentioned by the CC exec, seem okay to me.

1mbps - 600

2mbps - 999

3mbps - 1200

4mbps - 1400

6mbps - 1600

8mbps - 2000

Hathway HD

Posted: 05 Oct 2013 05:04 AM PDT

Seems like Hathway HD had been launched. Enquired with CC and they said that bookings should begin 1st week of Sept. Currently they are only providing demos. Gave me a cell phone number to contact for a demo. CC wasn't helpful beyond that and haven't managed to get through the cell no all day.

Anyone booked the demo? or have any pricing details on the box and/or HD channel list?
