Posted: 02 Oct 2013 12:05 PM PDT didn't find where to put this junk info, using this section.
My main laptop, Compaq CQ42 series, which I use as extended desktop got fried yesterday night.
It was working fine, and all I did was the weekly Ccleaner cleaning, and rebooted, The reboot didn't went through as mouse still had power, so long pressed power button, didn't worked out so pulled off the battery, It never came back.
Dissembled to check and found somehow motherboard went dead. RAM, HDD, Optical drive everthing is ok, but it won't power ON.
Gave to mother board repairing center today, and he was shocked when e saw I ripped off each of the parts. he was asking me to bring all parts but I managed and he will be repairing it, hopefully. It's the only center in my town with "Advanced BGA Machine" something to do with chip level I think. Have to use netbook till then, but I hate using anything below 14 inch. Enjoy the operation Laptop pics........ |

Is MTNL really offering FTTH or is it FTTC ? Posted: 02 Oct 2013 09:54 AM PDT Hello
i live in Thane and had registered somw months ago for FTTH after seeing ad in papers. after several months i git a call from local mtnl exchange that they want to come home to install . what they actually did was to set up a normal tel line from some box outside the building cliaiming this was the FTTh cable and next day they connected a modem (without wifi) ARGT 1000 from Alphion Coporation and left. As i was traveling on the days they came, only my wife was at home and these guys told her that everything is set up and they tested speed and it is 5 mbps. when i returned from my tour, i was surprised to see a normal tel line connected to the modem and the speed was just about 50 kbps !! I lodged a compliant and next day the technician came (again when i was not at home) and did something and left. that day i got a speed of 400 kbps but since then the connection stopped working. the "internet" light on the modem come on. I lodged complaint again and even sopke to the officer in Prabhadevi exchange but no remedy so far. they dont seem to know anything.
question is:
any of you have similar experience ? what was your connection (did they put the ONT in your home) or just a tel line / what type of modem/router did you get and what speeds are you able to get? did they give a wifi router or non wifi ?
i did some internet search and could not find anything (not one single hit) about this ARGT-1000 router !
from what i read on internet this type of connection is called Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) - running fibre optic cables from the telephone exchange or distribution point to the street cabinets which then connect to a standard phone line to provide broadband. is mtnl really giving FTTH or only FTTC ?
what type of modem is the correct one ? i believe the normal ADSL modems will not work with FTTH/FTTc and we have to go for VDSL modems - is this true ? if so which are good VDSL modems ?
any feedback/comments appreciated

The general cricket discussion thread Posted: 02 Oct 2013 08:30 AM PDT Why this thread? So often, we have some random thought or point to make/discuss , and I personally sometimes skip it as I feel it is not worthy of a new thread & feel its unfair to hijack an existing thread... Would recommend creating new thread for any big news & as usual we have threads for specific series/tournaments.. This is for something general random posts related to cricket...Kind of the Cricket Offtopic thread... Will start with one post ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Misbah & Taibu seem to competing with each other for the prize of who can bat more defensively.... ---------- After beating NZ in the 3rd ODI with a draing chase... Airtel Fraud- 200 Rs Deducted from Airtel prepaid Posted: 02 Oct 2013 08:11 AM PDT I received a SMS few minutes ago saying that 3G bill plan has been activated on my mobile phone. But I didn't request any 3G Bill Plan. When I checked my prepaid balance, its showing 4 Rs only when it should be more than 200 Rs. Never go for Airtel, they are a fraud company who likes to cheat customers, and make money. God knows how many people they are cheating like this. Should I go to consumer court? |

Really disappointed with Docomo in Karnataka Posted: 02 Oct 2013 07:21 AM PDT I was using a Vodafone connection which was excellent, and ported to Docomo in July 2013 for the sole reason that Vodafone's 3G licence was withdrawn in Karnataka. I wasleft with two options (Airtel and Docomo) which were the only ones having native 3G license in Karnataka. I avoided Airtel because I had used it before, and although Airtel's netwrok is good, they are big time frauds and cheats. I had no idea about Docomo, but since several people told me that Docomo has a pretty good network in Karnataka, I decided to port my number to Docomo.
All was well for a few days, and then the problems started. Docomo's netwrok is fine with respect to normal 2G voice calls, but its pathetic with respect to data. And the customer care too is not at all satisfactory. Let me explain in detail.
1) I have a Nokia Lumia 920 handset. I usually keep my data connection turned off, and only turn it on when required. I have noticed that 9 out of 10 times, I never get the data connection even after turning it on the settings. This is true irrespective of whether I turn on 2G data or 3G data. I have to turn the data connection on and off multiple times, and if I'm lucky, I get the connection after a lot of attempts. I contacted customer care regarding this issue in the beginning of August. He told me to change the access point name from TATA.DOCOMO.INTERNET to TATA.DOCOMO.INTERNETHVC, and this change would resolve my problem. I made this change, but noticed no improvement because the problem still persisted. I called customer care again the next day to tell them that the solution they provided didn't work. To this, the person told me that he has registered a complaint, and I would get a call back within 24 hours to either acknowledge that my issue has been resolved, or to let me know when it will be resolved. That was in the beginning of August, and until today (September 25th), I never got any call from Docomo, and the problem still persists.
2) Second thing is with respect to the language. Although I have clearly set my IVR language as English, I always get connected to the Kannada or Hindi customer care department whenever I choose the option to speak to a customer care representative. They told me that whenever the English department is busy, I get connected to either the Kannada or Hindi department. I specifically told them to change my settings so that I always get connected to the ENglish department, and I don't mind waiting for some time if the lines are busy. The person told me that my issues will be resolved within 24 hours, and after that, I will always get connected to the English department from my number. This was during the second week of August. But until today, the issue hasn't been resolved, and I still get connected to only the Kannada or Hindi departments.
3) Since I was having these issues and wasn't getting any solution by calling customer care, I thought of registering a complaint via the official Tata Docomo website. But for that, I needed to create an acccount and the site never allowed me to crate the account. The problem was that while creating an account, I'm asked to choose a password with a 'special character', but the supported special charaters are never mentioned. I tried passwords with all the special charaters available on my keyboard, but I always got an error which said that my passowrd doesn't contain a special character. This effectively prevents me from ever registering a complaint online.
4) My final issue is with respect to online recharge. The website asks me to enter my number in order to show me the available recharges, but when I enter my number and click 'submit', I always get a message which says 'No topups are currently available for your number'. So to recharge online, i always have to go through the tedious proicess of searching through the available recharges and then selecting the one I require.
If these problems continue, I would have no choice but to port to another operator once I have completed the mnimum duration with Docomo. Since I'm unable to get solution to my probelms in any way, I posted it here so that someone from Docomo might see it and improve their services.
Here are my details, just in case:- Number:- +919880144504 Email id:- sunil_u123@hotmail.com Sorry, i have no alternate number. |

Tikona Broadband User Experiences Posted: 02 Oct 2013 06:17 AM PDT Thought I would start another thread for people who have actually used this service to describe their experience. They have started advertising quite heavily in Bombay and their plans seem pretty decent. Their 600kbps UL plan would be excellent for me. I really like the way they have bill limits for their limited plans as well. That shows they understand consumer concerns about enormous bills and have designed their plans to allay them. So how good is their service? Any down time? How quickly do they respond to complaints? Really any information from people who have used Tikona would be appreciated. |

It is very tempting specially the live starter. Sify is a well known brand, and live is provided by sify. I don't know if they would deliver what they promise. You could easily try it out as it would cost only 1000 bucks. I hope more such isps start providing internet in Mumbai and Thane, and become hit, so that, at least other isps give provide fast internet at reasonable price, just like Hyderabad.

Using BSNL Modem Router AN1020-21 as a router or switch Posted: 02 Oct 2013 04:05 AM PDT Hello all,
As stated i want to use my old BSNL modem an1020-21 as a modem or switch. Just to give an idea : 1. I used this modem previously, now i am using Dlink dsl 2750u modem router for my bsnl connection.
Now I have tried using this bsnl model for hathway cable internet at my friend's place. I tried following things : 1. Connected hathway modem to LAN 1 of bsnl. 2. Connected LAN 2 of bsnl modem to PC. 3. In modem config, i used it as a bridged as well as routed connection. 4. Using the above config, i could access the net by wired connection.
But i couldnt access : 1. bsnl modem settings (192.168.1.1) 2. Hathway modem setting ( 192.168.100.1)(BUT IF ANY MODEM CONNECTED TO PC INDIVIDUALLY, I CAN ACCESS THE SETTINGS) 3. Cannot connect mobile to wifi(everything configured for wifi).Mobile devices get connected to wifi but internet is nt connected to wifi.
This is one problem, what should i do to access wifi? i think i am halfway through.
Now can i use the same Bsnl modem as a router/switch for my dlink modem router? If yes, how do i do it?If not, then why not?
I am technically aware of all networking terms, so if anyone can guide or explain me in right direction, i would be glad. Thanking everyone..bt i really need to make use of that BSNL modem. |
HORRIBLE BILL PAYMENT ACCOUNTING AT BSNL BHUBANESWAR Posted: 02 Oct 2013 03:15 AM PDT Paid my BSNL bill No.115762731 - 06/09/2013 for my telephone No.06742553002 at the local post office (PIN 751015, Receipt No.B 433 dtd.25-9-13). It has not been accounted for at the BSNL until 2-10-2013 and my Broadband speed has been reduced to 512 kbps from 4 mbps today. My telephone is likely to be disconnected soon. Tried to contact BSNL at 1500 and 165. The IVR choice "connect to a customer care executive" is a blind link, it connects to no one. On 1-10-2013, tried to contact one Mr. S K Sarangi, AO at their Bhubaneswar office on his mobile No.9437967087, he did not pick up. Sent an SMS to him, remained unreplied. Horrific experience. |

He claims that he and the FBI have the same interests: bringing down dangerous criminals and terrorists. Reddington will cooperate, but insists that he will speak only to Elizabeth Keen, a rookie FBI profiler. Keen questions Reddington's sudden interest in her, though he claims that Keen is very special. After the FBI brings down a terrorist he provided information on, Reddington reveals that the terrorist is only just the first of many. In the last two decades, he made a list of criminals and terrorists he believes the FBI can't find because they didn't know they exist and that they matter the most. Reddington calls it "The Blacklist".

Unique Identification Authority of India (Aadhaar) Posted: 02 Oct 2013 12:20 AM PDT the govts plans to have a biometric national id cards for everyone by 2010.In usa the real id act is facing fierce resistance as 20 states have signed legislation opposition this as well in UK as groups like defyid and no2id.THis national id card makes india a police state, mass surveillance society and blurs the difference btw nazi germany and india. the supreme court has interpreted that we have the right to privacy which the national id card violates. Why isnt anyone doing to stop this.I contacted times of india ,cnn ibn, ndtv but got no reply?. we already have voter id card, passport, driver license, ration card, pan card(similar to social security card in us.).EVen is usa the ss card is not to be used as a id card.why do we need a chip card?the only thing that i can think is abut control and monitoring us. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multipurpose_National_Identity_Card_(India) once everyone has this card the govt can track your every move and switch your card if you resist or dissent. those who give up liberty for security neither deserve liberty nor security-Benjamin Franklin. the cons of having a national id card NO2ID:why not? videos http://broadbandforum.in/politics/33896-we-soon-get-our-national-id-card/3/#post315359 http://broadbandforum.in/politics/33896-we-soon-get-our-national-id-card/2/#post278474 http://broadbandforum.in/politics/33896-we-soon-get-our-national-id-card/5/#post315728 hacking http://broadbandforum.in/politics/33896-national-id-cards-india/8/#post325815 can we stop this? |
Minimum internet plan required, only for video calls and some browsing. Posted: 02 Oct 2013 12:03 AM PDT Hello friends, One of my neighbors is looking for an internet plan. They are an elderly couple, recently their son from abroad sent them a tab that has only wifi connection, so that they can have video calls with them when needed. They dont have any pc or laptop. My guess is its the first time they would be using internet. Since I use spectranet and its quite good at my place i suggested them the same, where as their friends and relatives gave them other suggestions. They are yet to make a decision. So my question is, in terms of speed what is the minimun speed plan required to make video calls over skype and how much data one would consume over calls with little browsing in a month? I need to know so that I can suggest them a limited plan that is economical as well. Thanks! |

And they even claim for 16 MBPS speed with good cost, is it good buy or you can suggest me some alternative, is there no glass fiber connection possible.

Degrading BSNL Broadband and its Infrastructure. No hope in sight :( Posted: 01 Oct 2013 08:43 PM PDT I have been a BSNL customer for some years now , more because its the only ISP in many parts of the south india. Starting from the later half of this year , the BSNL broadband has been slowly degrading.
Every weekend , BSNL networks starts to crumble under the load (weekend influx of users) and not until Tuesday , the network starts to come back to normal.
It been happening for past 2-3 weeks. My SNR are within normal.
Here is current ping to google dns , so inconsistent , and also so high . Usually my pings are 20-40ms , but since its monday and as i said before , pings are horrible.
Routing is bad , and i dont know if bsnl is going to improve its infrastructure.
Today placed a complaint and got calls from local BSNL officer , regional officer . Regional officer had no clue what i was telling , as he kept saying my speed is 512kbps and it will soon be 4mbps coming 1st.. *facepalm* and i kept repeating the issue is with Routing and not with my speeds. I just said to tracert to one ip (valve server ) and look at the route and see for the lagging / latency node (TATA server)
http://whois.net/ip-address-lookup/180.87.12.81
A simple routing from india to singapore now goes via US *morefacepalm*
Did try to contact TATA , but they said to instead contact my upstream provider , ie BSNL
This has already been detailed in this blog post : http://anuragbhatia.com/networking/bsnl-softlayer-connectivity-problem-possible-fix/
And as the blogger said , its upto BSNL to correct the issue , which i think wont happen anytime soon.
Also from one of his tweet :
With no other ISP in my place , and no other prvt players coming along the road in any time soon .. Dont know what else to do.
With more dwindling profits , BSNL is in precarious condition and letting it fail will eventually lead to more people being cut off from internet , letting it live will only deteriorate the already present horrible network. Right now in Catch 22 situation .
All i think we can do currently is keep lodging complaint after complaint . But the current mentality of BSNL personnel's is to run an OK network , irrespective of it performs.
Does it lag ? Do you have latency while gaming ? Not able to run a decent 240p youtube video ?
WE ARE LEAST BOTHERED !! |
Need Suggestion for a backup broadband in Gurgaon Posted: 01 Oct 2013 08:23 PM PDT I have a small office setup at my home in Gurgaon and completely rely on Airtel broadband. Of late I am seeing deterioration of Airtel services in my area where it goes down every 10-15 days for 5-8 hours at times. I am planning to get a backup internet service.
What do you think would be the best and affordable back up internet service for my case where at least 2-3 users should be able to connect to the internet wirelessly. |
