Posted: 01 Sep 2013 12:33 PM PDT Alright, need to buy a new phone for mom. Has to be android. Budget is 14k. Can be stretched to 15k at the outset. She doesn't want mmx/carbon/xolo, so that's out. I thought of the Xperia M/L (more so M, as L is around 17k)
Any suggestions? |
Maryfi - Turn your Windows 7 laptop into a Wi-Fi Hotspot Posted: 01 Sep 2013 12:27 PM PDT Maryfi - Turn your Windows 7 laptop into a Wi-Fi Hotspot WHAT IS MARYFI? Maryfi is a free and easy to use software router for Windows 7 computers. With Maryfi, users can wirelessly share any Internet connection: a cable modem, a cellular card, or even another Wi-Fi network. Other Wi-Fi enabled devices including laptops, smart phones, music players, and gaming systems can see and join your Maryfi hotspot just like any other Wi-Fi access point and are kept safe and secure by password-protected WPA2 Encryption. With Maryfi you can share expensive airport Wi-Fi with co-workers, create a hotspot in your Ethernet-only hotel or dorm room, even extend the range of your home router. Maryfi can easily act as a repeater for your home router, extending its range and providing Internet access wherever you need it. Connect to your home network, apply sharing settings to your home network, enter the same Wi-Fi name and password, and hit "Start Hotspot." Devices will automatically connect to the Internet through either your Maryfi hotspot or home router depending on proximity. you can finally have Internet access in that impossible back room or basement. In addition, if you run Maryfi away from home with these settings, any devices that need to be bound to a specific network (such as Eye-Fi cards or wireless printers) will work flawlessly with no additional configuration no matter where you are! Internet connectivity is a lifeline. Airports, Hotels, and Coffee Shops know this and charge accordingly, often as much as $10-$15 a day, per connection! These fees can quickly add up when traveling with friends or co-workers. The handful of hotels that provide free Internet access occasionally only supply you with an Ethernet jack, which leaves Wi-Fi only devices and smart phones in the dark. Even the lucky few that have mobile 3G cards or adapters are limited to a single connection. Because Maryfi is free to download and use, users can save money on multiple Wi-Fi connections while on the road and still get all their devices online simultaneously. Offline Networking Even without an active Internet connection, you can still run a Maryfi hotspot. This provides wireless access to shared folders or drives on your network as well as the ability to play LAN games with others. How many devices can I connect to Tikona Broadband? Posted: 01 Sep 2013 11:56 AM PDT I have a Tikona broadband connection of HYDM4096. I want to share the connection with 5 laptops. I have an old D-link DWL-G700AP wireless access point device and i am able to get a wireless access point using the same and in the lan port i have connected the RJ-45 pin from the base of the tikona unit. I am able to access internet in the laptops but the problem is I have to login to tikona from each of them separately. Thus i can only connect 3 laptops simultaneously. The rest two shows authentication error when i login. So do i need a router to connect to tikona using all the 5 laptops simultaneously. I have searched the net and liked this router TP-LINK TL-WR740N but the problem is i am not sure if a router will solve my problem. So please help me here. Should I buy this router. Will it enable me to connect all 5 laptops simutaneously? |

Android smartphone in Rs. 10000-12000 price segment Posted: 01 Sep 2013 10:53 AM PDT So a friend of mine is looking to buy an Android phone. He essentially started with a Windows Mobile based HTC smartphone. Switched to Blackberry. Has been using a featurephone for the last couple of months. Now wants an Android device.
His budget is between Rs. 10-12K. He can at max stretch it to Rs. 14K but not above.
I suggested him to take my Galaxy Nexus for Rs. 10K as I would most likely get the Moto X which it is launched this month or next. But he wants to look at options for new phones.
About him? He is a Facebook addict. Other than that his company uses Google Apps. So, needs are quite basic. I do not think he would be running complex games on the phone. Usable camera would be great.
What would you guys suggest? |
Posted: 01 Sep 2013 10:40 AM PDT Hi Friends,

In India, if you are less than 18 years old... Posted: 01 Sep 2013 09:43 AM PDT A very serious thought came into my mind last night. I thought I might share it with you guys. In India, if you are less than 18 years old, then you can- 1) rape women 2) kill people 3) do burglary 4) do many crimes And, get away with max 3 years sentence. This is very serious issue. The so called juvenile in delhi gangrape case, despite proven guilty and was told to be the most vicious in that rape got away with just 3 years sentence. He was 17 years and 6 months old while he commited that crime. 17 & half years old committing such heinous crime, should be given death penalty. The law is so outdated and static. Now, in mumbai gangrape case, one accused said he was minor giving his leaving certificate as a proof. I don't know if they really do bone check for determining the age. I really don't trust the machinery in India. But, he could also get away swiftly. So, point I'm trying to make here is, If you are less than 18 years old in India, you can do whatever, and get away very easily. What are your thoughts.... |

The general cricket discussion thread Posted: 01 Sep 2013 05:58 AM PDT Why this thread? So often, we have some random thought or point to make/discuss , and I personally sometimes skip it as I feel it is not worthy of a new thread & feel its unfair to hijack an existing thread... Would recommend creating new thread for any big news & as usual we have threads for specific series/tournaments.. This is for something general random posts related to cricket...Kind of the Cricket Offtopic thread... Will start with one post ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Misbah & Taibu seem to competing with each other for the prize of who can bat more defensively.... ---------- After beating NZ in the 3rd ODI with a draing chase... Now Zimbabwe are on verge on possibly upsetting them in the Only Test... 116 needed in 34 Overs (Incl mandatory Overs) with the new ball just taken |

Posted: 01 Sep 2013 02:10 AM PDT Have been reading lots of negative reviews about Tikona lately... And wanted to share my experience regarding their services. I've been using Tikona for around one and a half year now, and it been quite a pleasant experience... I am not saying that don't have any issues or problems, but which broadband service doesn't? They have been providing me with the promised speed. Apart from a few downtimes initially, that is when I took Tikona, their connection has been quite reliable. Their customer service, I observed, have improved quite a bit since I first subscribed to them. Not the cheapest but, you surely get what you pay for. Attached is the screenshot of the speed test of my connection. |
Posted: 01 Sep 2013 02:08 AM PDT I was a reliance customer for nearly two years, I shifted my house and reliance says they don't have connection there, even though my new house is just opposite street in same area. Now I am looking for another service provider. I was going through tikona website, it seems there is a plan for 999 for 2mbps speed, is it unlimited or has FUP, I don't see anywhere they mention about FUP.
Also, I need feedback from Chennai users, is their service good in Chennai? Please let me know. |
Horrible Service by Tikona in Bangalore - Hebbal Kempapura Posted: 01 Sep 2013 01:51 AM PDT This is a verbatim transcript of an email I sent their contact center manager j.nair@tikona.in today
Hi all
I know that Mr. Nair will not read this email. All your customers who post their grievances on your forum cannot be wrong
I have a 4Mbps unlimited connection - User ID 1107736051
I stay in Bangalore and am connected through the Vishesh Complex Access Point
On and off I have been facing problems with the connection : No connection or dropping connection or low speed
The latest instance was yesterday
a) At 12:34 PM I tried your toll free number - the standard recording said that all agents were busy. Instead of offering a callback option, the message said that my number was noted down and that I would get a call back - that never happened.
At 8:14PM I tried the number again - this time I was told that the wait time was 5 minutes and was offered a callback option that I took - that callback did not happen either
c) At 8:50PM I called the tolled number and spoke with Aniketh believing that that the earlier callback requests were logged. I demanded that he puts his manager on the line. He said that if I want a manager I have to email this id. He did not even bother to understand why I was asking for a manager
d) From 8:50PM to 9:30PM I tried to send mails from both my Yahoo account and my daughter's gmail account - obviously neither went through because of the network speed issue
e) At 9:44 PM Rupesh took my call, confirmed that Aniketh had requested a senior to call me back and that the callback did not happen.
f) He 1st mentioned that he was unable to access the Bangalore AP. However on the 3rd attempt he was able to and said that the AP was good and that my roof top device was dropping signals. He organized an engineer's visit today
g) Your local engineer Raju ( Ph 9035882309 ) got the connection through but was not able to fix the speed issue. He said the issue was with the main Access point and that he would log a complaint with the concerned team. He seemed to be in a hurry to leave.
h) I called you tech support line around 1PM and spoke with Neha ( tolled number ) who said that the problem was not with the Access Point but with the roof top device. When I wanted to speak with a senior she offered a callback in 1 hour - that did not happen
i) I called back around 2:30PM spoke with a lady called Shalaka - who also offered a call back that did not happen
j) By that time we had a power outage and there was no power when I spoke with a person called Dinesh who said he was an L2. When I demanded that he puts a manager on the phone he said that ( a ) there were no managers on the phone and that he was the senior most person and ( b ) that if I wanted a manager I had to mail you.
k) Please tell me how on earth does a customer with a poor / dead internet connection mail your team in an emergency when your other staff are not helpful
My technical issue is still not resolved. What I have seen about Tikona till now is that :
1) You are a bunch of cheats - your IVR tells lies ( the callback requests are never logged ), your seniors do not heed the callback requests logged with your L1 agents. 2) When you reply to a customer's grievance it is very often in the form of an automated email that does not address the customer's issues
This mail goes verbatim on to your grievances forum and all other forums where Tikona customers have complained about your service
If any one wants to call me do so before 11:30AM - after that I leave for work and am not back till after 11:30 PM. I do not take personal calls when I am at work

Tikona Broadband User Experiences Posted: 01 Sep 2013 01:02 AM PDT Thought I would start another thread for people who have actually used this service to describe their experience. They have started advertising quite heavily in Bombay and their plans seem pretty decent. Their 600kbps UL plan would be excellent for me. I really like the way they have bill limits for their limited plans as well. That shows they understand consumer concerns about enormous bills and have designed their plans to allay them. So how good is their service? Any down time? How quickly do they respond to complaints? Really any information from people who have used Tikona would be appreciated. |
Faltu Service By tikona @ pune Posted: 01 Sep 2013 12:54 AM PDT Its been a month my tikona connection is down and in name of support tikona guys are just calling and repeating the same crap again and again " Today engineer will come to resolve the problems "
very bad service , liars ... |

Tata DOCOMO 10/20/50/100Mbps High Speed FTTH Plans Posted: 31 Aug 2013 10:46 PM PDT Does anyone have the new 10/20/50/100 Mbps High speed plans? They seem much better than Airtel's plans. What kind of connections are they?

Update: Connection is useless. They are barely able to provide 1.5 - 2 Mbps. Read post #109 onwards. |
Posted: 31 Aug 2013 10:41 PM PDT Suits (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Finished first season. It reminds me of two shows... First Collar on how it is presented. Mad Men because the character of Harvey Specter is so freaking similar to Don Draper. The problem is that Specter is like 5% of what Draper is. It just does not feel solid enough. When Draper talks, you listen. When Specter talks, you hope that he would say something that would impress you. Sadly, it does not happen very often. |
