Beacons and sirens on government vehicles

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 10:29 AM PDT

A bench of Justices G S Singhvi and Kurian Joseph said, "Apart from top constitutional authorities, there is no need for others to use a siren. Ambulances, fire brigades and Army using the siren is understandable. We think you should ask all others to remove it immediately."

It further said, "The general public hates vehicles with red beacons and siren mainly because of the brazen manner in which the police stops them to allow the VIP's car to have a smooth passage. Removal of the red beacon and siren will bring everyone at par though it may hurt some egos for some time."

Asking the Centre to contemplate on this, the bench said, "Once the government decides to reduce the number of red beacon and siren laced cars, and clamps down on illegal users, there will be perceptible reduction in the rate of crime."

Ashes 2013 (Aus v Eng)

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 10:05 AM PDT

http://www.espncricinfo.com/the-ashes-2013/content/current/story/644797.html

Mickey Arthur has been sacked as Australia's head coach less than three weeks before the start of the Ashes. Cricket Australia is yet to officially announce the decision but the chief executive James Sutherland and general manager of team performance Pat Howard are due to hold a press conference in Bristol on Monday morning (UK time) to confirm the move.

Darren Lehmann, the successful Queensland coach, is considered a leading contender to replace Arthur at short notice. Lehmann is in England having just finished a tour as mentor of the Australia A outfit and has won rave reviews for the tough and somewhat old-school approach he has taken with Queensland since he was appointed in 2011.

But whatever the case, the axing of Arthur has left the Australian camp in a shambles on the eve of the Ashes campaign. The squad was due to meet in Taunton on Monday ahead of their first tour game against Somerset, with some of the players having been part of the Australia A squad, some having been playing in the Champions Trophy and others having been warming up in county cricket.

Surprising move just ahead of the Ashes...

Passport denied because an uncle had links with militants

Sufaira Nazir, a resident of Beerwah, 20km from Srinagar, has bagged a scholarship among 40 students selected from India to participate in an one-year long exchange programme along with 40 students from the US.

She applied for a passport last year after she was selected the programme. However, her application was annulled because of her uncle, who had links to millitancy.

Ironically, the uncle has surrendered before the state authorities long ago.

MTNL Broadband VDSL2 User Experiences

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 09:23 AM PDT

I wanted to start a new experience thread simply to discuss MTNL VDSL.

Some things to consider before/after taking a new VDSL connection

SNR margins (SNRM)
Below 9 dB : Poor experience with lots of HEC and CRC errors. Line will disconnect frequently.
9   - 11  dB : Ok but not ideal. Disconnections will be there if some unexpected variance is introduced by rains, humidity in the wire.
12 - 16  dB : Ideal and realistic value. Expect almost no disconnections as the line has more wiggle room for tolerating variances.
17 dB and up : God Mode. Lucky few get this on VDSL synced at 30 mbps and up. So far I have seen various stats and no one has reported this SNRM (That is because VDSL sync rates are always higher)

Higher you sync rate, lower the SNRM will be. Lower the SNRM, lower the connection reliability. Lower reliability means frequent disconnections. Hence ISP's have a setting in DSLAM to artificially increase SNRM value for a particular phone line. Hence you sync at lower rate and line automagically becomes stable.

Attenuation may not be that important after all. It reduces sync speeds over a distance but is not an indicator of connection reliability. (You can roughly calculate your line length from it. Do it here)

Apply for VDSL connection only if you are within half km. Otherwise you will get ADSL like sync rates.

I will update this entry with some of our findings. Since VDSL is somewhat new to India, this thread can help some early adopters.

Currently the speeds are decent for fast servers. But single streams are slow due to a bottleneck somewhere.

I think they should have added support for 8" devices so that the recently launched Note 8.0 would have worked with this!

Frequent Disconnection / ADSL blinking Issue on MTNL Broadband

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 08:38 AM PDT

Hi,

I am a user of 849NU plan of MTNL Triband service since August based out of Navi Mumbai.

All of August, i was very happy to have a lovely connection and good speeds, with a pretty good tariff.
But now since the past 15 days I am suffering from very intermittent net connection.
Although I am connected to the internet, sometimes the webpages take ages to open, and never open, while at other times it opens instantly. Also downloading has the same pattern, sometimes I get very good speeds of upto 200 Kbps, while other times there is no download. Although all download sites show good Triband Speed, but it is the intermittent connection that is the problem.
This problem has crept up in the last 15 odd days, and I have tried everything but no change has been noticed.

Has anyone else faced a similar problem, and if yes, whats the work around. The people at MTNL classify this as a slow connection problem, but that is exactly not the issue, as I do get good speeds intermittently.

Somebody please help me.

MS staff

There was a pilot flying a small single engine charter plane, with a couple of very important executives on board. He was coming into Seattle airport through thick fog with less than 10m visibility when his instruments went out. So he began circling around looking for landmark. After an hour or so, he starts running pretty low on fuel and the passengers are getting very nervous. Finally, a small opening in the fog appears and he sees a tall building with one guy working alone on the fifth floor. The pilot banks the plane around, rolls down the window and shouts to the guy "Hey! Where am I?" To this, the solitary office worker replies "You're in a plane." The pilot rolls up the window, executes a 275 degree turn and proceeds to execute a perfect blind landing on the runway of the airport 5 miles away. Just as the plane stops, so does the engine as the fuel has run out.

The passengers are amazed and one asks how he did it. "Simple" replies the pilot, "I asked the guy in that building a simple question. The answer he gave me was 100 percent correct but absolutely useless, therefore that must be Microsoft's support office and from there the airport is just a while away."

Is Windows a virus?

No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:
They replicate quickly Okay, Windows does that

Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so okay, Windows does that

Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk Okay, Windows does that, too

Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems Sigh... Windows does that, too

Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware Yup, that's with Windows, too

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature

So, Windows is *not* a virus

Poor attendence record of the G Family

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 07:53 AM PDT

As many as 92 of the current Lok Sabha's 545 members have attended less than 50 per cent of the sittings in the House. With the last Monsoon Session of the 15th Lok Sabha beginning Monday, this list includes Congress vice-president and would-be prime minister Rahul Gandhi, who has attended 135 of 314 sittings.

An analysis of the attendance of members, as per information on the Lok Sabha website, shows that Congress president Sonia Gandhi fares no better. While Sonia's record (48 per cent attendance) is marginally better than son Rahul's (43 per cent), their BJP counterparts L K Advani (82 per cent) and Rajnath Singh (80 per cent) are clearly far more serious about their House duties.

In fact, all the front-row leaders in the House do better than Sonia, with JD(U) president Sharad Yadav at 83 per cent attendance, Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav at 86 per cent, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav at 79 per cent, the CPM's Basudeb Acharia at 90 per cent, BSP MP Dara Singh Chauhan at 93 per cent, the DMK's T R Baalu at 84 per cent and the JD(S)'s H D Deve Gowda at 66 per cent.

Extend Wifi range using a spare wireless router?

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT

Hi guys,

My primary router is DSL-2750U which is in one room where the MTNL line terminates.

The wifi range from this router does not each my hall.

I have a spare wireless router: ZyXel: P-660HW-T1 V2

Is there any way I can use this spare router near my hall so that my wifi range is extended into the hall?

I do not have an option to drag any wires from the primary router to anywhere near the hall, hence all wired approaches are ruled out.

Any advise on a wireless solution please?

Thanks a ton.

Need help in configuring TP-link WR740N wireless router with MTNL triband!!

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 07:01 AM PDT

Hi,

I recently purchased the TP-link wireless router (WR740N) from flipkart, so I could have a wireless internet connection for my laptop; however, I'm getting error configuring the device. It fails at the last step of the configuration wizard, "Confirm Settings".

The error I get is:
"Failed to verify Router settings:"
1. Please check the WAN connection type and parameters.
2. Please check your network connectivity type and retry."

When I remove the router, the connection with ADSL router works fine.

When I go into the router setup page (192.1.0.1), I cannot see anything under WAN settings except the MAC address. All the fields are 0.0.0.0

Apart from this, I have no clue what else could be wrong!!

As far as I know, the username for MTNL is your phone no. and password is the customer no., which I have put in. I also tried to confirm with MTNL at 1504 but there's no option to speak with a human anymore. All they can give you is a silly docket no.!!!

The less I talk about the TP-link support, the better. Their tech support does not work. They have given the support number just to show that they provide support, you cannot speak to anyone and then they disconnect!

Please help!!!!!
