Mobile operator in Mumbai / Maharashtra circle with decent 3G ?

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 12:21 PM PDT

Thanks to Failtel who deactivated and recycled my prepaid number few months back, I will now have to get a new mobile phone number in either Mumbai or Maharashtra circle (after 2 months). I use only prepaid mostly because of lesser calls and very less SMS messages.
But I am interested in getting a 3G connection for the number I will be getting.
The phone will be used in Pune and Mumbai so I would prefer something which has 3G in both these circles.
Which operator should I opt for ? The operator should have decent 3G connectivity and decent plans. Unlimited usage on 2G after 3G quota is over would be great but not really required.

worst customer service by tata docomo

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 11:53 AM PDT

Recently I had worst service experience with tata docomo. I am using SIM of tata docomo with internet connectivity. In last week, to my surprise, two times  I felt that my balance was reducing at a much higher rate. Once it was reduced to zero and another time just after my recharge some rupees were deducted. When I inquired about this with service center they were not able to give any satisfactory answer. Moreover they blame me that I might have downloaded something....so pathetic...I have decided that I will switch to some other service provider.

Cyanogenmod cLock for Google Android

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 11:04 AM PDT

On Phones, Lock screen widgets start in a 'minimized' state when the screen turns on. To view the the full widget, 'maximize' it by swiping down. This is how Lock screen widgets work on Android 4.2. We are looking into ways of altering this behaviour without negatively affecting the user experience.

On Tablets, Lock screen widgets show in the 'maximized' state by default.

Chronus will make its way into the nightlies starting today. It is still a bit of a work in progress with minor bugs to fix and more features to add.

Just now got a call from Airtel announcing my area (HSR 5th sector Bangalore) is now enabled to get 8mbps and I accepted the 80GB plan offer for Rs 1599+tax / month.  Post FUP limit the speed is 512kbps :D

And with free calls: Local On net 150000 sec free, Local Offnet 30000 sec fr  (whatever that means)

Indian government to monitor all communications through Central Monitoring System

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 10:29 AM PDT

Starting from this month, all telecommunications and Internet communications in India will be analysed by the government and its agencies. This means that everything we say or text over the phone, write, post or browse over the Internet will be centrally monitored by Indian authorities. This totalitarian type of surveillance will be incorporated in none other than the Central Monitoring System (CMS).

The Central Monitoring System (CMS) may be another step in the wrong direction, especially with the lack of privacy laws to protect Indian citizens against potential abuse. Yet, all telecommunications and internet communications are to be monitored by Indian authorities through the CMS, despite the fact that it remains unclear how our data will be used.

It will be connected with the Telephone Call Interception System (TCIS) which will help monitor voice calls, SMS and MMS, fax communications on landlines, CDMA, video calls, GSM and 3G networks. Agencies which will have access to the CMS include the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the Narcotics Control Bureau, and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Last October, the NIA approached the Department of Telecom requesting for connection with the CMS to help it intercept phone calls and monitor social networking sites without the cooperation of telcos. NIA is currently monitoring eight out of 10,000 telephone lines and if connected with the CMS, NIA will also get access to e-mails and other social media platforms. Essentially, CMS will be converging all the interception lines at one location for Indian law enforcement agencies to access them. CMS will be capable of intercepting our calls and analyzing our data on social networking sites, and also tracking encrypted signals. Thus our attempts to protect our data from ubiquitous surveillance would be futile.

A Few Concerns Regarding the New 50MBps Plans

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 09:58 AM PDT

Hey,

I've been a subscriber since Oct of last year (187792) and am currently on the ACT BB DOUBLE PREMIUM plan which is 10MBps till 75GB. I am considering switching to the new ACT BB SOHO Value plan which is 50MBps till 250GB for Rs. 3299 p/m. I currently have two concerns:

1. Why is the post-FUP speed 2MBps when we are paying more than Hyderabad who has a post-FUP speed of 6MBps?

2. Will I be able to switch back to my current plan if I decide the 50MBps plan is not worth it? I absolutely detest the current roster of plans so I do not want to choose between my current plan and a 25MBps plan.

Thanks guys,

128kbps post FUP speed ?

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 09:58 AM PDT

I reapplied for Connect  Broadband as backup connection for some reasons. I have DSL 399 plan on this, i don't know why but they downgraded me to 128kbps from 512kbps after 1GB of use (WTF ?). I am just wondering do TRAI allow this, post FUP speed of 128kbps instead of 256kbps? Should i contact Connect customer service about this ? This is really ridiculous !

Tata Sky DTH now replacing MPEG2 STBs with MPEG4 STBs for free!

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 08:48 AM PDT

We are replacing close to 5-6 million MPEG-2 SD STBs at no cost to consumers over the next year. All of this is coming in from internal accruals.

But you need to wait for one more year to see many new channels

We have been adding channels in a phased manner; the process will now be accelerated with the MPEG-4 STB. By June-July next year we should be able to revise our channel offerings to consumers,

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 08:31 AM PDT

HI,

I'm currently using BSNL BB with BSNL modem, since couple of months connection is getting worse day by day.

I'm planning to move to ACT BB in couple of months, prior to that I would like to change the modem which works both on BSNL and ACT BB.

Let me know whether "TP-LINK TD-W8968 300 Mbps Wireless N USB ADSL2+ Modem Router" works on both? or suggest me any other.

Thank you.

Jolla: The Other Half

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 06:21 AM PDT

The phone seems to be called "The Other Half" -- or at least that's the working title for now -- and judging from Jolla's Facebook page it consists of a colorful plastic case, available in various shades including orange or green, which hooks onto the main chassis containing a 4.5-inch display (of unknown resolution), dual-core processor, microSD expansion with 16GB onboard, a "4G" modem, user replaceable battery and an 8MP rear camera. The chassis recognizes which case is attached and adapts the visual theme of the OS to match, creating "your other half, exactly as you want it to be."

BSNL - Good riddance !

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 05:47 AM PDT

I had two BSNL broadband connections, one of which dated back to 2004-5. Since last two years one of my connection was giving problem during rainy season, during rains it used to frequently disconnect and my complaint to them met deaf ears. Once a pro BSNL customer, I finally decided to get rid of them and shift to airtel, I applied for surrender of both my connections and two new connections from airtel. Got the airtel connection the very next day, where BSNL took 10 days and various visits to get one of my connection disconnected, while they refuse to disconnect another one on the pre-text that they need the modem they had provided me to be returned. The modem in question was given to me in 2010 upon opting for 1yr committed period ( I had disconnected my line for a year in 2009, so it was kind of new connection in 2010), their service record shows "FREE" modem, and they saying that I need to return them the "FREE" modem. Hilarious, I know, I went and spoke to the DE who is not willing to listen, spoke to the CO, who says she cant do anything and I need to speak to the DE, at the end frustrated I was, I requested the CO to charge me for the modem in the next bill but at least disconnect the broadband. She says she will try to speak to the DE and get it charged in the next bill and let me know. They don't even understand the meaning of "FREE".

Finally, good riddance ! (provided they disconnect by charging me for the modem Rs 1000/-)

XenForo Updates

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 04:56 AM PDT

I am planning to migrate this forum to XenForo whenever they release the stable build.

Here are some features missing from it that are here or I want to have!

RSS support is not that good. I doubt a third party mod would be made or would be a good idea to use.

[Suggestion] Few suggestions related to RSS Feeds | XenForo Community

There is no official support for showing the latest updated threads on the homepage. I assume someone would make a mod for this.

[Suggestion] Optional: Show a list of latest updated threads on the forum homepage | XenForo Community

Tags are totally missing. It has to be an internal feature. Cannot rely on a mod for this.

Support for Tags? | XenForo Community

Links are not converted to links with their title tags! Again. This has to be internal.

[Suggestion] Convert Links into Links with Title Tag of the page as Link Text | XenForo Community

There is no good alternative of vaispy. A mod should be good enough for this.

Everyone's News Feed Auto-Refresh for Mods and Admins | XenForo Community

Ability to block a member from view. Basically, the power to ignore members on a board. You do not get to see their posts, PMs and so on!

I am just collecting a list of features that are going to be irritating after switching to XF!

I also currently have no idea how easy it would be to place the ads in the template. I guess I would find that out when I get my hands on the beta that arrives in the first week of October.

Finished first season. It reminds me of two shows... First Collar on how it is presented. Mad Men because the character of Harvey Specter is so freaking similar to Don Draper.

The problem is that Specter is like 5% of what Draper is. It just does not feel solid enough. When Draper talks, you listen. When Specter talks, you hope that he would say something that would impress you. Sadly, it does not happen very often.
