Any idea if any good? I have still not purchased an electric shaver. A trimmer would be good enough as I do not have a formal job.

Reviews are positive. People do not like that it does not work while charging. I can live with that.

Oppo R819

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 11:35 AM PDT

Oppo smartphones may have a good reach in China, but it's a name that most people in the Western Hemisphere haven't heard of. As many other OEMs from the area, the manufacturer is hoping to reverse that trend, and its strategy is to first appeal to the most hardcore of enthusiasts with its latest device, the R819; is it any wonder, by the way, why Oppo would choose today of all days to launch it? This isn't the product's first rodeo, actually, because it's already available as the TD-SCDMA-friendly R819T on China Mobile, but now it's ready to reach other markets throughout the world.

Want to buy a RO/UV Based Filter

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 09:40 AM PDT

Its kind of urgent. I want to buy a RO+UV based Filter. Was using a simple UV based till now but now can't especially after this year's rains and the digging happening right outside our house. Water quality has gone worse.

Won't go for Eureka Forbes as their service sucks. Which one should I go for? I was thinking of Kent Grand+. How's Kent's service in Delhi? Any other you would recommend?

Strike back

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 08:56 AM PDT

Synopsis:
Strike Back: Project Dawn, as it is known in the United Kingdom (or just Strike Back in the United States) is a ten-part British-American action serial television series, and the follow up series of Strike Back. However the only cast member to return from the original series was Richard Armitage in his cameo appearance. It was a co-production between British broadcaster, BSkyB (for Sky1) and American premium cable broadcaster, HBO (for Cinemax). The series follows the actions of Section 20, a secret branch of the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6).

My opinion:
This show is better than it needs to be. A season has 10 episodes, with a mission per 2 episodes taking place in different locations around the world. There will be a overarching story connecting the 10 episodes. It's like watching 5 decent action movies shot within a TV budget. They still use the locations very well. The action is well choreographed. Being a cinemax (skinimax) show, you can sense the nudity around the corner but it's not really gratuitous like in Starz shows. The first UK season only has 6 episodes but I didn't watch that season. It was revamped in the second season called Strike Back: Project Dawn. I only started watching the show from the second season. The first 2 episodes in Strike Back: Project Dawn takes place in India.

The 2-hour premiere of the third season called Strike Back: Vengeance premiered last Friday.

Import of Duty Free Flat Screen television banned in India from August 26

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 08:55 AM PDT

India will ban the duty-free import of flat-screen televisions from August 26, the government said in a statement on Monday, adding to a package of measures designed to prop up the rupee by stemming the flow of foreign currency out of the country.

Government officials estimated that more than 1 million television sets were brought into the country last year -- many from Dubai, Thailand and Singapore -- under a scheme that allowed airline passengers to bring in screens worth up to 35,000 rupees as part of their baggage allowance.

Under the new rules, passengers will have to pay a 35 percent duty and other charges, the officials said.

http://www.readability.com/articles/jhlyo4px

Hopefully the guy who was planning to bring a TV from Singapore hears about it in time.

From what I read on the news... In addition to 35% duty, there is also a possibility of 100% penalty.

I am wondering if smartphones would be next.

Tata Sky DTH now replacing MPEG2 STBs with MPEG4 STBs for free!

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 08:36 AM PDT

We are replacing close to 5-6 million MPEG-2 SD STBs at no cost to consumers over the next year. All of this is coming in from internal accruals.

But you need to wait for one more year to see many new channels

We have been adding channels in a phased manner; the process will now be accelerated with the MPEG-4 STB. By June-July next year we should be able to revise our channel offerings to consumers,

Tata FTTH broadband artificially throttling download speeds to half from ISP

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 08:29 AM PDT

I have recently taken a Tata Docomo FTTH broadband 16Mbps connection in Bangalore. I discovered that I am not getting 16Mbps when trying to download large single file and it is being capped at 8Mbps. But if I try multiple files download (from the same site) , the cumulative BW I get from these multiple downloads is very close to 16Mbps .

I tried this with a 2GB file (Win7 SP1) and then again with large multi part download of the same files from microsoft.com.

It seems that they are artificially throttling download speeds of single downloads (or may be any TCP sessions) to 8Mbps . This is definitely frustating because :

1. This caveat was not mentioned in their plans .

2. It does hamper large single download (movie, OS ISO image etc.) speeds. Maybe even streaming content (Youtube).

3. I was on Airtel FTTH before and they did not have this issue.

When I contacted technical team they came back with a lame excuse that single files usually "encounter" such issues and it is really a problem of the destination web servers and not Tata Docomo ! What BS !!

Anybody else experienced this ?
