BSNL Broadband capacity is down by around 21%

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 12:32 PM PDT

"... three major cables which are serving as the International Gateway Connectivity are affected because of the multiple fibre cuts," BSNL said in a statement.

"The Sea-Me-We-4, IMEWE and EIG cable systems are the ones affected. Because of this disruption, BSNL has lost around 21 per cent of its total international Bandwidth," it added.

Annoying part of the article?

It, however, could not be ascertained whether BSNL's customers are experiencing any trouble due to drop in bandwidth.

The Ubuntu Edge is a very ambitious smartphone that'll be capable of running a full-fledged Ubuntu desktop operating system alongside Android. While specs are currently tentative, the company is aiming to outfit the Edge with a quad-core CPU, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Meanwhile, the phone itself will sport a 4.5-inch, 1,280 x 720 display that's constructed of sapphire crystal glass, an 8MP rear / 2MP front-facing camera and stereo speakers. As for connectivity, Canonical's eyeing LTE, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC, along with MHL support.

Airtel 4G LTE speeds are now restricted at 10mbps in all circles

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 11:24 AM PDT

I am from Pune. Had two demos in last two days (25 and 26 June 2013). Must admit the sales guys were very cooperative. Scanned my entire apartment, only 2 bars in gallery and a window but still was getting 10 down 5 up. Airtel guys said the range is a big problem, you have to be in 300 to 400 meter periphery from the tower. So we tried the speed tests on terrace too.

Now, this is where it gets interesting. On terrace (of our 8 floor building), the single was full. I was expecting significant speed improvements.

But to my astonishment they were still stuck on 10 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up. No improvements on download speeds, even after single improvement from 2 bars to full 5 bars? Occasionally we hit 12 Mbps for a brief second, but that's it.

We tried downloads from different sites, same story.

System reboots, dongle reboots, same story.

It was a ZTE MF880 with MiMo support.

I can recall a demo some time early this year, where a Huawei E392 was cranking 33 down and 11 up in inorbit mall. Was very impressed back then.

So what's going on here? Even on full bars, I am not getting any speed improvements past 10Mbps down and 10Mbps up.

Is it a device issue? ZTE MF880 supports only 67 down / 17 up, while Huawei E392 is 100 down / 50 up.

OR Airtel is throttling the bandwidth?

Anyone having a different experience?

Airtel chennai users,Some questions for you..

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 10:49 AM PDT

Hi guys I'm thinking about shifting to airtel, Ive been a long time user of bsnl (for like 10 years now), now thinking of  shifting.

I'm thinking about taking the rapid 80gb plan (80gb, 8 mbps, 512 kbps after quota).

1) Do you really get the speed advertised? I've seen youtube videos of it, but is it really true? And how is the upload speed? I've heard 0.8mbps is the upload speed for most airtel plans. I'm currently stuck with 300kbps upload with bsnl, so this will be a massive boost.

2)How is the ping to singapore (and other servers like eu/us)? This is actually the most important part for me as I play a lot, dota/sc etc. Specifically If there are dota 2/lol players here what is your ping to the sea server? and could you do a tracert of sg.logon.battle.net.

With bsnl I normally get anywhere between 40-90 ping to singapore, and 250 to the U.S, and 150-200 to EU. But off late I've been getting terrible pings (normally this is fixed by restarting your modem till you get a good ping..but it doesnt seem to be working). do you get the same low pings in airtel, or it higher?

3) Customer support: Now I know this is non existant in bsnl, so anything would be a huge improvement, but in bsnl I knew a lineman who could atleast get people to look at something at times (mostly connection down, line dead kinda issues). But airtel I'd have to rely on the phones. So is it worth anything at  all?

4) blocked websites: Another thing that bsnl has started doing recently, a lot of filesharing and image hosting sites are blocked, I've heard airtel is pretty strict on this too. On bsnl I've gotten by using proxies, can you do the same on airtel?

So yeah, I've heard a lot of bad stuff about airtel, but also a lot of people tend to swear by it, so I'm really confused.

Why this thread?

So often, we have some random thought or point to make/discuss , and I personally sometimes skip it as I feel it is not worthy of a new thread & feel its unfair to hijack an existing thread...

Would recommend creating new thread for any big news & as usual we have threads for specific series/tournaments.. This is for something general random posts related to cricket...Kind of the Cricket Offtopic thread...

Will start with one post

Suggest a Multifunction Printer for Home

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 09:26 AM PDT

I want to buy a printer for home. My usage is mostly photocopying and little printing. I currently use a HP printer that has seen better days.
My needs are:

-Printer, Scanner, Copier

-Only A4 printing, colour and B/W both. No photo printing.

Optional(depends on the price):
-Wireless printing from phone and laptop.
-Touchscreen

I'm open to buying HP and Canon. After sales must be good(I'm happy with the HP one).

I saw these:http://www8.hp.com/in/en/products/printers/index.html?facet=Home-and-home-office#!view=column&page=1&facet=Home-and-home-office%7C%7CWireless

TataSky migrating to MPEG4; will exchange MPEG2 STBs free of cost

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 08:32 AM PDT

We are replacing close to 5-6 million MPEG-2 SD STBs at no cost to consumers over the next year. All of this is coming in from internal accruals.

But you need to wait for one more year to see many new channels

We have been adding channels in a phased manner; the process will now be accelerated with the MPEG-4 STB. By June-July next year we should be able to revise our channel offerings to consumers,

Reliance Broadband down in Mumbai - western suburbs

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 07:16 AM PDT

My Internet service has been down for the last 4 days and Reliance Broadband customer service would promise to get it rectified. Eventually I got really pissed and asked to talk to a manager. My Krishna came online and informed me that the problem is with Reliance and BMC as Reliance has not paid the rents and BMC has cut the service and they have no "ETR" aka ETA for the service to be up. Well so I figured that this is now not working for me. I am already fishing for another provider in the Mumbai murky waters.

Apparently the Reliance Broadband service has had this problem earlier; Mr. Krishna told me so and this has been corroborated by this Forum and also my family informed me the same - I was traveling out of India and recollected the issue. Reliance and BMC have problems and all that Reliance really does is dig elsewhere and provide access. This is cheating in my opinion. If the company does not have a proper cable system, has rent issues or plain does not have the necessary infrastructure to provide a service, they should not sell the service. I may go to the consumer court for the loss of my opportunities and the time spent on call and still not having internet access.

If there are other people in the Western suburbs facing this problem, please ping me and let us get together to file a case against Reliance.

My MTNL FTTH broadband Review

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 07:11 AM PDT

My broadband story first
MTNL has started deploying the Fiber To The Home (FTTH) broadband connections in various localities in Delhi. Rohini area being one such locality in which I reside. Earlier the only options I had in terms of fixed line broadband in my society were MTNL ADSL(Asymmetric Digital subscriber Line ) and Reliance Fiber Metro Ethernet broadband connection. We had no option of Airtel, for which I was real eager to switch to because of its high reliability.

Both Reliance and MTNL ADSL were unsatisfactory with their uptimes. I have used both and Reliance was quite a shocking experience for me. I had opted for the Reliance connection back when we had more of the limited usage plans. I had a speed of 2 mbps down with a 2GB free usage after that chargeable. Initially I was quite happy with the connection, It had very less ping times and great speed but it went down a couple of times approximately 4-5 times in a month but it was better as compared to MTNL ADSL which went down 5-6 times in a day (due to very old and shoddy wiring in my place) but a time came when my Reliance connection went down for a whole month and to my horror I received a bill of Rs 15,000 even though I didn't use any Internet that month because it was not working.

I figured out that someone else had used my internet profile because the Reliance connections back then were not port bounded, (Or it can also be a case of fraudulent billing from Reliance's side because as people call it it is a "CHOR" company). I got Reliance disconnected then and ther and never looked back.Well that thing aside I have been a loyal customer for MTNL broadband for the past 10 years approx. Although I had to live with the frequent disconnection problem with MTNL but that didn't bother me much because the connection was mostly back in 5 to 10 minutes.

All these years I was on a 512 kbps unlimited connection but then for youtube this isn't enough so I thought upgrading the plan speed might help me. So I opted for a 2 mbps plan , the speeds were good, 480p played smoothly but sometimes youtube did buffer even on a 360p quality setting the cause which I haven't been able to figure out why. ADSL was not upto the mark for my Internet needs. I wanted something faster and more reliable and god was kind enough to relieve me of my agony after 10 years by bringing in MTNL FTTH to my area. I should say it was a real happy moment of my life when I got a call from the MTNL sales executive asking if I wanted a fiber connection. I was just ecstatic and instantly agreed.

Installation
The sales rep. was quite prompt enough that he came to my house with the application form within minutes of the phone call. I opted for the annual plan FTTH 790 in which i only had to pay for 10 months while the registration, installation etc. charges were totally free. I just had to pay Rs.800 for the wifi modem. The sales rep was a MTNL govt. employee and had a pleasing nature (I was quite surprised!). Well he said that I would get the connection installed in 7 days.

I nodded and he left, 5 days passed and a boy of 17-18 years of age(don't know exactly but he looked like) came to my house and dropped a thin optical fiber cable from my balcony to the ground and left saying that an engineer will come in the evening to install the modem/ONT(optical node terminal).Well no one came that day,The fiber cable is even thinner than the normal telephone cable that comes into your house. Two days passed, there was no sign of any engineer but on the 8th day a guy from Aksh Optifiber (company handling FTTH deployment and maintenance for MTNL) came and installed the connection in about an hour(it took long because my ONT was not upgraded to the latest firmware). Somehow with the help of people from MTNL NOC(network operations center) he did manage to setup the ONT.

ONT is the same shape and size that of a normal ADSL modem but instead of a telephone line input this has an optical input. It has 4 ethernet ports and 2 telephone RJ11 output jacks with a power ON/OFF button in the front. This ONT supports 2.5Gbps down and 1.5Gbps upload bandwidth. Although the company name of the modem is not mentioned I got the specs from a similar looking ONT on the internet. Unlike an ADSL modem we can not fully configure this ONT by ourselves(only some configuration options are available like port forwarding etc.), DNS and other options can only be configured by the people at NOC using the optical interface.

Now came the turn to setup the wifi connection, I thought that the ONT would have wifi built in but this was not the case. The installation guy took out a MTNL wifi ADSL modem 450TC1 from his bag, took a CAT5 cable and connected the first port of the ONT to the first port on the wifi ADSL modem. He just setup the SSID and password on the wifi, opened the yahoo page on my netbook to show that the connection is working and left. I couldn't wait to atart exploring this new connection and went to setup my desktop and other laptop. I filled in my wifi password in my laptop and opened chrome, put in facebook.com and to my surprise saw "Server not found" message. Then I went back to my netbook and the internet was not working on it either. All my dreams and expectations had shattered then and there. I thought a "sarkari company" can not change the color of its feathers...

I did a bit of experimentation and found that the internet was intermittently working on my devices, instantly I figured out that the WiFi router is the culprit. Internet was working fine if directly connected my laptop to the ONT via a CAT5 cable. I typed in 192.168.1.1 in my browser to open the wifi adsl router setting page and started tinkering with the settings. After 2-3 hours of trying to solve, searching on the internet to make the wifi router work as a switch I just remembered that in my third year of Engineering I had done a training in networking where I virtually setup many big cisco routers and switches.

I suddenly realised that I am an A**hole that I couldn't apply my brain to setup such a puny wifi router. (Well I will blame the installation guy, it was his job to setup wifi to work with the ONT.) .The thing that made the setup work was that two router can not be connected to each other on the same set of ip adress group. for example my wifi router was assigned the ip address 192.168.1.1 and the ONT which is also a kind of router was having the ip address 192.168.1.251.

What I did was ,just set the ip address on the wifi adsl router to 192.168.2.1 instead of 192.168.1.1, turned OFF DHCP on the Wifi router and voila! internet started working like a bullet train on all my terminals simultaneously. Its been a month since that day and the internet hasn't disconnected even for a single second for all these 30 days. WIN! for me. Although the power adapter given with the ONT was a bit faulty as whenever switched ON the fan in my room it would just restart the ONT (was a very weird problem I guess!) well i got it changed and now I am a real happy and satisfied MTNL FTTH user.

Connection speed and Quality
The speeds are great too with no buffering at all even on 1080p youtube videos. The download speeds that I get in Orbit Download manager are about 1.5MB/s and speedtest.net website indicates my connection speed as 12Mbps although I am on a 10 mbps plan. Pingtest.net shows my connection quality to be 'A'.

Pros:
Very fast and stable speeds
Not too costly
Free installation with the annual plan
No disconnections(its like having a business leased line at home)
Optical fiber right up-to home (can support exceptionally high speeds in future )

Cons:
Installation not up to the mark
WiFi not in-built in the ONT, separate WiFi router needed.

BSNL Broadband: How to Troubleshoot Frequent Disconnection

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 07:03 AM PDT

1. Post your SNR and Attenuation values. Table for speed less than 8 Mbps

Posted Image
If your values are bad, ask the line man to give a clean line. Make sure there are no joints or non insulated parts.

2. Make sure all connections come after splitter. Follow this diagram

Posted Image

Bypass the splitter, connect the line directly to the modem and check.

3. Check if splitter or ethernet cable is faulty. Use a spare one and check.

4. If possible get a friend's modem and check. That will confirm if modem is faulty or not.

5. Do you get power reset ? If yes, check modem's power adpater and make sure it is functioning well.

6. Try GDMT mode in modem and check.

India in Zimbabwe 2013

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 06:48 AM PDT

http://www.espncricinfo.com/zimbabwe-v-india-2013/content/current/story/643679.html

India will tour Zimbabwe for a series of five one-dayers starting July 24 and ending on August 3, the BCCI has confirmed. It will be India's next international assignment after their tri-series in the West Indies that concludes on July 11.

The first three one-dayers will be played in Harare, with the last two in Bulawayo. India had confirmedtheir tour following a BCCI working committee meeting earlier this month. The trip had earlier been put on hold, with the board citing the 'fatigue factor.' It is uncertain at this stage if the selectors will stick to a full-strength squad.

When India last went to Zimbabwe, in 2010, Suresh Raina captained a young side, and didn't make it to the final of the one-day tri-series.

BSNL Broadband: Common Questions

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 05:55 AM PDT

I have seen many people that they are facing the some basic problem's ..........

Let me Explain u very clearly .......

1 . On which server they are hosted .. weather they are in NIB -1 or NIB -2 ?

if u got a username as "" priya_hyd "' then u r in NIB-1
or if u got a username as "" maxer123 "" then u r in NIB-2

please Remember that in which server u r hosted this is very important in some issues

u can get another way find it.......
if ip address starts with 59.xxx.xxx.xxx then u r in NIB -1
or ip address starts with 117.xxx.xxx.xxx then u r in NIB -2

2. Username and Portal Is are Different ?

This a problem faced by NIB -2 Users only ..................

U got a portal ID ( eg..."" yar85216052008 " ) --- this a username to check the usage details for NIB- 2 users only ....

then whats the username then ......... the username u usually ( eg .. an865236541 ) is the PPPOE username which connects u to internet only

Both the passwords are by default are same .........
please try to chages then ........... keep the different password for both ID's

3 . Check the usage ?

For NIB-1 the Ip address to check the usage is ?

10.240.240.195
i have not much idea about other ip but this works ...
hey the usage deatils are update very fastly about 5 min delay .........

For NIB-2 users .....

data.bsnl.in
bbservice.bsnl.in

u need to use the portal ID to login ...... and portal password .........

NOTE : the usage is updated very lately .... takes about a day or more i can't garenty a day ........

Please Be carefull if u r a limited plan user mainly H500 .........

4 . Whats is Modem's IP and Internet IP ?
U should know the Difference .........

Bsnl will give an ip address to connect to internet ... which will be like 117.199.228.159 this is like a address to u in internet .........

But there is an Ip u should remember 192.168.1.1 .......
this is used in locally to configure the modem through Web browser .........
when u try to open this on web browser 192.168.1.1
u will get login POP-UP

By deafult
username : admin
password : password / admin

5 . Whats u r Net speed ?

There may threads wasting on this topic ........ :wall::wall::wall:
The speeds are limited ...... u must accept it ......
Don't trust the speeds in speedtests .....

If u are in Home 750 u should know the u r speed is 256 kilo bits per second (kbps) or 32 KBps (Kilo Bytes Per Second ) .........

If u are in H 500 Plan u speeds can go upto 2 mega bits per second (mbps) or 256 KBps ( Kilo Bytes per second ) ..... Please don't argue with this ..... this is proved .........

6 . How to configure the username and password into the modem ?

This is not recommended for Limited plan users and who download files from the Rapidshare and other hosting services ....

Form this time u should know how to login into the modem .......

here is the Video Tuitorials .......

7 . How to secure wi-fi ..... ?????

Dataone WebMail see the down there ...... u see some PPT's ........

There is some thing similar like this ......

In the ppts they shown u to select the WEP please don't use WEP ,,, use WPA .. for security

Posted Image

Please Don't select WEP ,,,, use WPA and above because WEP can be hacked very easily ......... :cool2:

8 . Enhance u r Browsing speed ?

This is don't tell u that u r speeds are increased .....

There is one concept that will perform u r browsing speeds higher ... by changing the DNS server ......

For normal users who use yahoo , gmail and other popular sites don't need this tweak ........

This is for Pro and People who will explore the internet ...........

Here it is explained very clearly ..... .... http://broadbandforum.in/bsnl-broadband/39049-dns-servers/

9 . Damm Serious thing about the Billing in H500 or any other night unlimited plans ? (Especially for NIB-2 Users)

Please take it seriously ........ because i was charged 45,000 rs for BSNL for not knowing this INFO .......

I u connect to internet before 2 PM and used the entire night .... then the usage was not calculated as free usage ......... U should Dis-connect and connect after 2 AM ( For safe side connect at 2.20 ) .....

For example -- u have used 2 gb in normal usage ...... then one day u connected to internet before 2 PM and used the internet and downloaded about a Gb then u disconnected at 6M ... u might be thingking that from 2-8 AM its free .. So u will not be charged that 1 Gb into the Account Even when u see the Data.bsnl.in for usage ... the page is not updated untill 1-3 days ..

After 2-3 days u will see that 3 Gb was charged into the account ...... Please be carefull about it

Specially NIB-2 users .......

No one can help in this matter ..... this very serious issuse ...

Mapathon Contest Winners are still waiting for their prizes thanks to the government

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 04:54 AM PDT

Google has sent out an email to Google India Mapathon participants stating that is unable to announce the winners of the contest that was due on July 23rd because of security concerns expressed by the Survey of India (SOI). Google had emailed participants also at the end of the contest to inform them of the concerns of the Indian government. The Delhi Police had begun to investigate the contest after a complaint was filed against Google Mapathon 2013 in early April by the Survey of India. The Survey of India, a government body mandated with the task of surveying and mapping the country, filed a complaint against Google at the RK Puram police station in Delhi stating that the program conducted by Google was against the country's National Map Policy and map restrictions policies issued by the Defense Ministry.

How to activate GPRS internet plan on BSNL mobile connection ?

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 04:16 AM PDT

Does anyone have any any idea on how to activate GPRS internet plans on BSNL mobile connection ?

It is easy on other providers like Airtel as you have to just send a code message and the amount is deducted from the main balance on activation.

Is there any such facility for BSNL mobile connection also or we have to run to the BSNL office for activating even small GPRS packs like Rs 14 also ?

Flipkart is no longer an authorized partner/dealer in India for Nikon Products

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 03:14 AM PDT

Flipkart is no longer an authorized partner/dealer in India for Nikon Products. So, after 19/07/2013, I don't think it would be a good idea to buy Nikon products from Flipkart since Nikon might refuse warranty or free service to the product. Not sure about products bought before 19/07/2013 though. Another setback for Flipkart it seems.
