Truecaller database Hacked

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 12:47 PM PDT

Syrian Electronic Army hacks into Truecaller database.

Truecaller has officially confirmed that it was hacked.

Truecaller, a collaborative phone directory that uses crowdsourcing to build its database, has allegedly been hacked into by a group that calls itself the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA). The group of hackers claimed to have access to more than a million Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google

and Yahoo accounts that are linked to the Truecaller service. "Sorry @Truecaller, we needed your database, thank you for it  :)," read the group's post on the microblogging website.
The SEA's website also declared that the over 600GB of hacked data had been sent to the Syrian government.

Founded in 2009, Sweden-based Truecaller is available on the web and as an app for the iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Symbian and Windows phones. The service works by collecting contact information stored in the users' phones or on their social networking profiles.

The SEA claims to have defaced or compromised several websites in the past — their most highlighted work arguably being the attack on the Associated Press news agency. On April 23, 2013, the group had tweeted from the wire service's account that the White House was attacked and that President Barack Obama had been injured.

If the latest claim made by the SEA is to be believed, users from countries such as China, Turkey and Hong Kong are among those hit by the 'hack-attack'. The group posted a screenshot on its Twitter account showing contact details of users from these countries, 15 hours after the first post related to the Truecaller attack was made.

Laser operation for eye

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 11:48 AM PDT

Hi

I need to know the following regarding laser operation for eyes

  1. Is it 100% safe or does it have 0.01% of risk?
  2. what is the cost in India (Delhi to be precise)?
  3. What precautions does one have to follow after a laser eye operation?
  4. Once done, will it not require to put eyeglasses or contact lense for their entire life? If yes then under what circumstances?
  5. Is it painful?
  6. How long the operation last?
  7. Is there any limit? for eg. laser operations cannot be done for someone who has -x / +x power
  8. Any other info / fact you wanna share?

I know i can go around and read articles on the internet regaring laser operations but i'd like to hear from someone who has actually done it or knows someone who has done it.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Best FM Radio Station in India

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 10:40 AM PDT

I travel almost 2 hours daily between home and office. During journey FM Radio is good source of entertainment. Some Radio Stations (Like Radio One) are good and play nice latest as well as all time hit songs. But some Radio stations (Like Radio Mirchi) are just having more advertisements and play very little songs. Even songs they play are not complete. I hate to listen some of RJs who I feel would do better job if they keep their mouth shut :) In my city we don't have AIR's FM Gold/FM Rainbow stations. We only have Vividhbharti, but it has many educational programmes, so at times it gets boring listening to it. So Which is best FM Radio Station in India? For me its Radio One, or sometimes Radio City.

User Review: Micromax A116 Canvas HD

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 10:11 AM PDT

Well, technically, not my phone. But, I guess that is not the point of discussion here. So, moving on..

i) Accessories - Headset, Charger .. Thats it.. Not that was expecting anything else.
ii) Played a few HD videos. No lag.
iii) There were couple of games - Played the cricket game. There was a slight lag. Dad wanted the games to be removed (as to keep kids away from his prized possession) , so helped him do that
iv) Photos looks good, but then I am not good at taking photos. But attached a couple, so maybe you can judge.
v) Sound is a little less, not bad. But I feel at max. level, it should be 30% more.
vi) Dont think they have added any Custom UI. Just some minor customization. Just a few pre-loaded apps apart from Google ones.
vii) Internet browsing is just fine. Downloads & especially Installation looks superfast compared to his old HTC Wildfire phone
viii) Used live wallpapers for a while & the battery drained like crazy. Back to normal wallpaper, but still it seems it drains quiet fast. Need to check if some app is causing a problem. But then, the phone is in use for the past few hours continuously.
ix) Price - 13990. Would say VFM. Delivery was quick from Snapdeal. Bought on Early hours of 14th & delivered by noon of 16th
x) @admin - No its not that thin, but quite similar to Galaxy Note if you can compare. And there is no one coming out of the phone in a ski as well.

Question on phone storage. I inserted a 2 GB SD card. And now storage shows

Phone Storage - 0.98 GB, 704 MB available
Internal SD - 1.77 GB, 1.67 available
External SD - 1.84 GB, 0.92 GB available

So.. What is the difference between "Phone Storage" & "Internal SD"

Also, do let me know if any specific queries.

Here are the photos that I took. I guess it shows that there is one career I cannot possibly switch to, if I want.

ACT Broadband Bangalore Reviews

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 10:06 AM PDT

Hello Readers,

My name is Vivek Sinha Anurag and i am going to post some "great" work shown by Act Broadband.

I applied for ACT Broadband 5 Mbps plan [its having cap value of 35GB after that speed will reduce to 256 kbps] by calling their customer care on 16th Aug 2011. I was surprised to see their lightening fast response as the representative came to my doorstep the very next day and on 17th Aug 2011 Mr Ashitt O.S. collected the money and documents and told me that withing 5 days i will get my connection and i even got sms confirmation that my request no is 142263.

Now the real story started. Even after 6 days no one ever bothered to check my request so i called customer care [ 080-42840000] to remind them and i was told that i will get it withing next 2 days. I waited for next 2 days and called them again.

I was surprised to learn a new technical term from them that they are "Uploading network" hence its taking time and soon i will get my connection. Since my work was getting affected because of their delay i applied for a BSNL connection too. Now today is 5th September and i am still waiting for the connection and to my surprise i got the BSNL broadband last week.

I tried escalating this matter and asked the customer care for any high level contact and they said that i need to mail helpdesk@acttv.in. I emailed them but i got no response.

Please note some points regarding ACT broadband before applying ACT broadband
1. They dont have nodal officer/appellate authority [against TRAI rules and i have already escalated this matter to TRAI officials with the help of pgportal.gov.in]
2. They have a customer base of 2500 users in bangalore and they are not able to manage even this small number.
3. They DO NOT PROVIDE STATIC IP [even if they claim to do so]
4. Their customer care service is useless. All you will losse is your balance by talking to them
5. They can "Upload network" [You can imagine the understanding capability of their technicians]
6. They are fast in collecting money but lazy in delivering service

Final conclusion: To be on safe side stay away from them else you will suffer like me. Morning shows the day and even before using their service i am suffering. Don't know what will happen when i get the connection and i face any problem that time.

New Broadband for home.Please Help!

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 09:52 AM PDT

Guyz,I reside at Dwarka in New Delhi.Currently I am an MTNL user having the 599 plan which provides me with 512 kbps unlimited. So,due to the slow speed i want to change my isp or mtnl plan.I have a budget of max to max. 800-900rs and I want unlimited or a good FUP plan.As i was scrolling through some options, i figured out all these...
Reliance thunder plans,Beam Fiber,Tikona,Nextra,Airtel...
But after reading some some of the discussion pages...I got a mixed opinion about it as some clients complained about the poor customer service of Reliance,Beam and Tikona. So,actually i want to know the opinion of those who reside in delhi and use these.

PS-Do you guys know how i could i get nextra connection for my particular society. The nextra connection is available in my sector and even the neighbouring societies but when i checked their online availability list i didn't had my society in there...and as their pans are extremely good therefore i will make any effort from my side to get their internet connection up in my society also.

ICICI Bank to stop sending paper statements from July 2013

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 09:43 AM PDT

In the garb of "go green" icici bank has decided to do away with physical stmts altogether for every savings account customer from 1st July 2013
Now they will semd only the annual physical stmt after the end of financial year.
Personally i have always thought of this 'go green" campaign as petty fraud done by institutions to cut costs & imply to customer they are doing good for the environment

Network Traffic Monitoring on Airtel Broadband

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 05:12 AM PDT

Hi,

I have an 8 mbps Airtel BB connection. The ADSL2+ router is Beetel 450 TC1.

I also have about 5-7 laptops, all using a Wifi connection to connect to the Internet.

I want to monitor the traffic at the ADSL router level. All i need is the aggregate Rx & Tx for a particular PC or laptop.

As i can gather from many of the posts here, people are already complaining about Airtel bumping up the consumption statistics. I have a very similar problem because my 30GB quota gets over in 5-6 days and there is no misuse.

I have heard about some tools on the net like PRTG Network Monitoring, etc. How does one enable SNMP on the Beetel 450 TC1?

Is there any other tool that someone has used to monitor network traffic and bandwidth usage at the router level?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and Regards,
Anand

MTNL VDSL2 experience

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 03:43 AM PDT

I wanted to start a new experience thread simply to discuss MTNL VDSL.

Some things to consider before/after taking a new VDSL connection

SNR margins (SNRM)
Below 9 dB : Poor experience with lots of HEC and CRC errors. Line will disconnect frequently.
9   - 11  dB : Ok but not ideal. Disconnections will be there if some unexpected variance is introduced by rains, humidity in the wire.
12 - 16  dB : Ideal and realistic value. Expect almost no disconnections as the line has more wiggle room for tolerating variances.
17 dB and up : God Mode. Lucky few get this on VDSL synced at 30 mbps and up. So far I have seen various stats and no one has reported this SNRM (That is because VDSL sync rates are always higher)

Higher you sync rate, lower the SNRM will be. Lower the SNRM, lower the connection reliability. Lower reliability means frequent disconnections. Hence ISP's have a setting in DSLAM to artificially increase SNRM value for a particular phone line. Hence you sync at lower rate and line automagically becomes stable.

Attenuation may not be that important after all. It reduces sync speeds over a distance but is not an indicator of connection reliability. (You can roughly calculate your line length from it. Do it here)

Apply for VDSL connection only if you are within half km. Otherwise you will get ADSL like sync rates.

I will update this entry with some of our findings. Since VDSL is somewhat new to India, this thread can help some early adopters.

The post your speedtests, pings and traceroutes thread.

Windows 8.1 (Windows Blue) Updates

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 12:43 AM PDT

What to Expect (And What We Want) From Windows Blue

More tile sizes: If Windows Phone can support three tile sizes (small, medium and large), then Windows 8 should absolutely support them, too. The tiles are much larger on Windows 8, so smaller sizes would be easy to tap with a fat finger. It will also make for a more personalized Start Screen, which the Windows 8 Modern UI is all about.

Updated Mail: The Windows 8 Mail app needs some extra power. Simplicity is great, but some basic additions would help it be a more useful tool. Microsoft should add support for POP3 accounts and incorporate features available in Outlook.com like drag and drop. A report from ZDNet suggests that this might come prior to the Windows Blue update.

Ability to use multiple browsers in Modern UI: This is a small request, but it addresses what can become a major annoyance in Windows 8 if you ever use more than one browser. Right now, even if a browser is available as a Windows 8 app, it will only work in the Modern UI environment if it is set as your default browser. If it's not your default browser, then it will open in the desktop. That goes for the built-in IE10 browser and other offerings like Google Chrome.

Boot to desktop: This is one of the most common Windows 8 demands, especially for business users. It should definitely be an option for Windows 8 Pro users, who do most of their work in the desktop environment. It's thoughtful and will make a large number of users happy without much work. But it should absolutely not be an option for Windows RT, where the opposite should be true.

Make it possible to manage everything in Modern UI: Alternatively, if you want to stay in the Modern UI 100 percent of the time, Microsoft should let you stay there 100 percent of the time. Especially since the Modern UI is the future of Windows. Microsoft should have the Task Manager, Windows Explorer and Control Panel available as Modern UI apps. You should be able to change your screen resolution and manage your files without being forced to the desktop.
