| Amazon Prime takes on Netflix with streaming video subscription Posted: 22 Feb 2011 11:02 PM PST  Amazon Prime could quickly become a major player in streaming video. (Photo Credit: CC BY-ND/Dennis Johnson/Melville House Publishing) Amazon.com has announced that subscribers to the Amazon Prime service – unlimited free two-day merchandise delivery for per year – will now have access to streaming movies and television at no additional charge, reports CNET. Much like Netflix, Amazon Prime users will have instant access to more than 5,000 streaming movies and TV shows via a broadband Internet connection and computer or Internet-connected television. The annual price for Amazon Prime undercuts the minimum Netflix price of per year. Amazon Primes the pump for a Netflix/Hulu warDana Rayburn of consulting firm Frost & Sullivan told CNET that the Amazon Prime news comes as no surprise, considering the built-in audience of 65 million-plus and the operating capital necessary to get a streaming video venture rolling. Adding such value to an already popular free shipping service at no additional cost was a no-brainer, said Amazon Prime Vice President Robbie Schwietzer.
Amazon Prime will face stiff competition in Netflix, Hulu Plus and Apple TV, which have already snagged considerable share of the online streaming video market. Amazon.com is a giant of its own when it comes to buying books, movies, music and more, plus its annual subscription fee beats Netflix and Hulu Plus. New York Magazine also reports that Amazon Prime, unlike Hulu Plus, won’t force viewers to watch commercials before or during streaming videos. Businesses in home repair, car repair and even health care will forgo a few dollars to get your business. Negotiating medical billsWhen it comes to negotiating medical bills, doctors and hospitals do it all the time with insurance companies. As people lose their health insurance and are forced into lesser coverage, negotiating with patients is becoming more common. A procedure often has different rates based on whether Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance pays for it. Doctors and hospitals would much rather work with a patient than deal with a bill collector. Negotiate for a better deal directly with the doctor. Offer to pay quick cash up front. When the hospital gives a quote, make a counteroffer. It’s easy to find the going rate for medical procedures in different regions of the country online.
