Loop To Idea MNP on prepaid rejected due to Lifetime validity!! Posted: 01 Feb 2011 11:55 AM PST I was informed over phone..that porting has been rejected..haven't received any official sms from 1900 stating the same. Went to idea store, they say its the same problem with other operators...told me to wait and watch until the 7 day period. Mobile Number Portability should have been handled by trai, rather than the host operator. Now they are misusing it as per their convenience. |

Add VC to Parent Child Connection - Multi Room Posted: 01 Feb 2011 10:39 AM PST Hi, anyone know how to go about doing this? I have 3 Dishes and 3 VCs in my house. I had earlier added my second VC to my first one as a child about 2 months after buying the second one, after the initial free period offer. After I bought my third HD VC and after the free period offer, I have been told, I cannot add it as child to my original Parent/Child setup that I have with my first 2. Apparently Zee DTH changed their rules and that a VC can be included in Parent Child only at time of initial activation, which I was not told by the dealer/installer. Anyone else with this same situation? Thanks. |

BSNL hopes to benefit from MNP Posted: 01 Feb 2011 10:18 AM PST State-owned mobile operator BSNL is gaining four customers for every customer lost due to the mobile number portability, according to BSNL chief general manager (AP Telecom Circle) Rajeev Agrawal. Addressing the media here on Monday, he said so far 14,000 customers had expressed their intent to be part of the BSNL network while 4,000 BSNL customers were planning to move out. As many as 11,500 are porting in already, he said adding BSNL hoped to benefit from the MNP due to its low tariff and wider network. Most of them coming to BSNL are prepaid customers. BSNL is offering free SIM to customers coming in through MNP along with an additional talk value of Rs 100 and 5 GB GPRS download. It has also waived porting in charges of Rs 19. The company added 3,50,000 customers in January alone, he said, adding the number would increase in the days to come with the MNP. It is also confident of adding new landlines customers through its new schemes - Bandham and Nestham. The first one allows customers to make unlimited free calls to his landline while the second allows friends and family members registered to call at 10 paise per minute, he said. The AP Telecom circle is making efforts to improve the coverage by installing additional base transceiver stations among others, he said. Movies Now HD Channel Launched Posted: 01 Feb 2011 10:14 AM PST It's been so many months since HD DTH was launched but no new channels really. Kinda frustrating if you are the early adopters with the HD boxes but only 2 real channels in HD. Tata Sky seems to be in no hurry to negotiate their deal with Movies Now. Anyone got any stats on the number and percentage of HD STB boxes installed in India? Just curious now. Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk |

The Airtel love story with a very sad decline and ending (lil' scoop on FUP too!) Posted: 01 Feb 2011 09:13 AM PST Quote: My overall experience has been a bit flaky with the internet connection itself. When it runs, it runs great but my internet goes down every 2-6 hours. The interesting part is that the ADSL link still shows on at on the router but it won't connect to the internet. A router restart restores the internet immediately. I am working with their people to get this resolved, they are saying they will change the router and see. Apparently some other people are also facing the same issue both in Delhi and Mumbai, see this post: http://broadbandforum.in/mtnl-broadb...connects-even/ I will keep you posted on the "switch" but overall I am happy and relieved that I don't have to deal with the Airtel bullshit anymore - that had turned into a nightmare! I hope I have nailed the issue - will update after running it for a few more days. |

About the day - well I suggest a more co-ordinated "attack" and a recurring one like in Egypt - how about 13th of every month being an Anti Airtel Day!! FUP HAI HAI!! Airtel Murdabad! |

Need info about the Fivenet Network Posted: 01 Feb 2011 07:36 AM PST Hello everyone.I'm from Mumbai and currently using a MTNL internet connection with a speed of 320 Kbps. I've heard that Fivenet provides LAN services, specifically DC++ hubs which enable people to share all kinds of data from songs to movies etc. What I need to know is 1)How to get a Fivenet connection in Mulund,Mumbai?I mean, whats the procedure for it? 2)What are the installation and other charges and various plans for a Fivenet Connection? 3)Is DC++ free in the plan and the plan what we subscribe for is the Internet usage plan? 4)Is it necessary to have a plan of unlimited bandwidth to download continuously from DC++ or even a limited bandwidth plan is sufficient? Specifically,is the usage of DC counted in the bandwidth [for a limited net plan]? |

Want 2 but worldspace receiver for 500 Bucks. Rep abhijitwork@gmail.com Posted: 01 Feb 2011 07:18 AM PST I know the worldspace service is not available in India. I would be sending the receiver to Mauritius to receive the afristar east beam which still has some good free to air channels. You are from Bangalore and this east beam of afristar satellite is also receivable from your place. When i was in Bangalore in 2004 i used to receive signal from this satellite but the signal was weak. Right now i am in pune and from here also that beam is easily receivable. I am searching for a receiver which has inbuilt speakers. It will be good if i get the first receiver from BPL. That was bpl Celeste with cassette player and AM,Fm and SW radio. Thanks |

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 05:00 AM PST BSNL's offer for porting in customers on prepaid. -> http://www.bsnl.co.in/service/Promot...fer_mobile.htm This is specified for "GSM" port in customers, but not specific to 2G/3G. Here is the data given for prepaid port in users. A-Special Tariff Offers for Port-in GSM Customers under Mobile Number Portability (MNP) i) Port-in charges will be waived off. [ Yes ] ii) 32K SIM will be given free of cost. In case of specific demand for other SIMs, actual SIM price will be charged. No need to pay 19/- as port in charge . However, you need to pay for the 3G .. i.e. the 120/- for enabling 3G on the SIM. Check balance with --> *123# iii) At the time of activation of all port-in customers, additional talk value of Rs.100 will be offered in addition to the normal free talk value available with FRC. [Yes] We seem to be getting 250/- with the activation of the 3G 120 plan. Also, validity is 6 months. iv) All port-in customers will be offered 5 GB GPRS for one month free of charge. I checked with BSNL CSC, who confirmed that 5GB data for a month is valid on GPRS / 3G . However data seems to be charged when using 3G! Check GPRS / 3G usage with : *124*1# A separate charge will be noted for 3G data used! v) Free SMS? (not mentioned) There seem to be 2000 SMS free. Confirm using : *124*2# |

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 04:55 AM PST Traffic Shaping and Fair Usage Policies are two very different things, however the former was supposed to try and prevent the latter. You should realize that FUPs have been around very much longer than you might realize - since the 90's, actually - and it's not just limited to India and the USA (or UK, Canada or Japan). It's actually there in pretty much EVERY country on a very significant percentage of ISPs (I'd like to say 90% or something but I can't realistically prove that except if I were to use a sample of the 50-odd ISPs I can name from the top of my head). |

Netflix: ISPs who charge by the gigabyte are ridiculous Posted: 01 Feb 2011 04:33 AM PST I fully agree. If we had to charge a content provider, it would be based on their connection to the network and any costs incurred, not per GB. Our peering will be something like maybe 3 lakhs a year - similar to NIXI, but without any additional usage charges, and content providers might be marginally more than that - say 5 lakhs a year. That works out to be like 14 paises per GB which is pretty reasonable. |

photon plus device specs huawei ec152 cdma1x hsia Posted: 01 Feb 2011 04:19 AM PST I have recently taken a tata photon plus connection. First day, my experience was terrible; very low speed; and my skype spewed reds on me. I would want to know few technical details: 1. What are the specifications of Huwaei EC152 device; What is its supported speed limits. 2. The device shows "CDMA1x HSIA USB Stick" what does that mean? is it CDMA1x which can support only 144kbps throughput, or is it HSIA? if so what does that mean, is it equal to EVDO ? or EVDO and HSIA interchangeable names? As per my knowledge it should be at least EVDO to reach 3.1 Mbps as specified by the photon plus. But if the device is CDMA1x it can't give 3.1 Mbps. Then if it is HSIA i am not sure what it is. Please throw some light on these buzz words with respect to photon plus. Also share any useful information that can help improve the speeds. My troubling doubt is that, Did I get wrong device (usb)? did I get cdma1x instead of evdo? (huawei ec1261). thanks, __ Mallik. |

BSNL Dataone started working so well since recently Posted: 01 Feb 2011 02:21 AM PST The general consensus of most Airtel customers at the moment when asked the question of "should I join Airtel Broadband?" is: don't. In fact run away. Fast. It seems that over the last several months Airtel has created a negative sentiment amongst it's retail customers. As I understand it, many subscribers are switching to Reliance, if it's available. |
Free ways to boost your internet connection. Posted: 01 Feb 2011 02:15 AM PST This is not necessarily advisable. Many ISPs have caching servers in their networks which greatly improve performance of sites such as Youtube. If you use OpenDNS, even though these DNS servers are distributed throughout the world, you'll end up hitting some OTHER ISP's cache for such sites, and your performance will be heavily degraded: depending on your internet usage, of course. If you're accessing Youtube, would you rather the video was streamed from somewhere in India or somewhere in Singapore or even the US? To solidify my point, ping YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. using your ISP's DNS servers. In India, something less than 70ms should be acceptable. Then change your DNS servers to OpenDNS or even Google DNS (as above). ping YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. again and you'll probably be pinging to a different IP address with a much higher pingtime. Here's an example of what I got on my ISP versus some public DNS: ISP DNS vs Public DNS: which is better? on Twitpic |

With in two weeks of purchase modem is not starting properly, and i suspect this is due to loose connection at the power port. I went to BSNL office on this issue asking for repair or replacement. The most funny thing I heard from them is, warranty is only on the accessories like adapter and cables but not on the modem. I just want clarification on this one. If warranty period covers modem also, please help me whom to contact so that my problem gets solved. Regards, Kranthi |
