Geri Jewell is known to many people as Cousin Geri in “The Facts of Life.” The actress and comedienne has had a hand in a significant portion of TV history. Now, Geri Jewell has revealed that she is a lesbian — as well as many other facts — in her new memoir.

Geri Jewell is releasing a new memoir in early 2011. Titled “I’m Walking As Straight As I Can: Transcending Disability in Hollywood and Beyond,” the writing covers Jewell’s life from birth to her 2009 role in HBO’s “Deadwood.” While Jewell was incredibly successful in Hollywood for a while, it did not always come easily. As a closeted lesbian with cerebral palsy, she encountered everything from discrimination to abuse.

“Walking As Straight As I Can” is a book that chronicles many different challenges. Geri Jewell first became a stand-up comedienne and then was cast in “The Facts of Life.” Jewell played the first person with a disability to be featured in a recurring prime-time television role. She spent four seasons on the show and was invited to the White House. She encountered tax problems, drug addiction and a major accident in which she almost died.

The double meaning of the title “I’m Walking As Straight As I Can” highlights Jewell’s other big secret. She comes out as a lesbian in the book, a secret she kept rather tightly under wraps during most of her career. Though it is becoming much more accepted to be out in Hollywood, when Jewell started her career in 1980, it was practically unheard of. Veritas RS III

Veritas is a small company that was created by a group of international motor racing enthusiasts and their latest project, RS III delivers their vision of a one-seater sport roadster. Only 30 copies of the Veritas RS III have been built and the roadster is based on a monocoque frame while its body is made entirely from carbon-kevlar. Power comes from a supped up BMW M5 5.0 liter V10 engine that develops 600 horsepower. The engine can be matted to a 7-speed SMG III gearbox or the 6-speed manual from BMW. Due to the lightweight body structure, the RS III weighs only 1,070 kg or 2,360 lbs. With a time of 0 to 60 MPH in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 216 MPH.

Well, what do you know? When Volkswagen decided to show off the latest version of its so-called one-liter car, the Formula XL1, at the Qatar Motor Show, we wondered out loud whether or not the German automaker would actually manage to put it into production. As it turns out, that’s the plan, albeit at a very small scale.

According to Automobilwoche (sub. req’d, via The Truth About Cars), Volkswagen will build 100 XL1s as a small batch of regular production machines… meaning they’ll actually be offered for sale to the general populace. No word on what will power the production models, but the concept features a two-cylinder TDI engine, electric motor, lithium-ion battery pack and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. All that fuel-sipping goodness is enough to achieve an astonishing 0.9L/100 km – just over 261 mpg.

Germany will reportedly get first crack at the XL1, followed by the United States and China. Color us surprised that VW actually plans to produce a nearly 300-mpg machine, going to the trouble of putting it through safety and emissions tests and all that goes along with making it legal, for such a small batch of vehicles. Surprised, but pleased, while also a bit skeptical it will ultimately happen. Projects like these are usually the first to get cut when the global economy forces belts to be tightened.
