The Wisconsin Special

1922 Wisconsin Spcl DV 08 AI 0017 The Wisconsin Special

The Wisconsin Special was driven by Sig Haugdahl to over 180 mph on a one-way run at the Daytona Beach racing oval. This was a tremendous accomplishment as the car had reached speeds a full 24 mph father than the previous record holder.

Haugdahl had built the car to prove to the USAC that he was a great race car driver and that he could outpace anyone. The heart of the Special was an enormous 836 cubic-inch Wisconsin Special Airplane engine connected directly to the rear axle. The width of the car measuring a mere 20 inches was basically the width of the engine.

To keep the car aerodynamic and stable at speeds, all exposed parts were taped, covered, and smoothed. The engine was mounted in the front with the driver, Haugdahl, sitting directly behind in it and just in front of the rear wheels. The boat-tailed rear end was designed to also reduce drag and increase the vehicles aerodynamics.

Thirty Years After The Original, Audi Wants To Build Another Masterpiece

Audi Quattro Concept

Blue and red flashing lights filling the mirror after a spirited canyon run are never welcomed. Yet this time, I’ve fully embraced them. Why?

I’m driving down California’s Pacific Coast Highway in Audi’s one-of-a-kind Quattro Concept with a full police escort. In front, law enforcement is clearing the road ahead as if sweeping for mines, pushing civilian traffic off to the side. I’ve got another unit behind me, shooing the restless natives off my flanks. The parade is impressive, but I’m wary of the pageantry. Are the cops there to solely maintain a generous cushion around the multi-million dollar concept, or has Audi paid them to keep me from rocketing off into the sunset off with their turbocharged 190-mph sports coupe?

I’m tempted to floor it and find out.
