LA 2010: Focus Race Car Concept is the future of Ford racing Posted: 17 Nov 2010 10:05 PM PST Filed under: Concept Cars, LA Auto Show, Motorsports, Performance, Ford, Racing Ford Focus Race Car Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery Ford has pulled the wraps off what it claims is a hint at its future global race car. The Ford Focus race car concept takes the standard 2012 Ford Focus hatchback and preps it nicely for full race duty. This includes gutting the interior, fitting a FIA-approved roll cage, strapping on AST performance coilovers with adjustable dampers and beefing up the sway bars, brakes, wheels and tires. What’s not beefed up is the turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost inline four-cylinder engine, which is used in the hot-hatch Focus ST where it produces 247 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. Keeping the driver comfortable and in check are a Recaro racing seat, Ford Racing six-point harness and fire-suppression system. Ford’s goal for the race car concept is to supply private race teams with a competitive entry in a wide variety of racing series around the world. The car conforms to FIA Super 2000 regulations and can be adapted to fit the rules of other governing bodies as well. The Focus race car concept is set to make its debut at the 2011 British Touring Car Championship. Ford says it also wants to run the Focus in endurance races such as the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Ghost Yachts reveal new Hybrid Concept G180H Posted: 17 Nov 2010 09:09 PM PST Almost a year after Ghost Yachts revealed the original Ghost G180 and eight months after the Ghost 180V concept was unveiled, the team of Ghost Yachts and the Italian design studio Gloss Design have announced a new hybrid version of the G180 platform. Joining forces with Imtech Marine & Offshore, they have developed the 55-metre Ghost G180H, the company’s next step towards more sustainable, innovative and efficient superyachts. "Developing the G180H was very rewarding,” says Björn Moonen of Ghost Yachts, but he admits that he was sceptical about designing a hybrid yacht at first: “In the beginning I approached the project with suspicion rather than enthusiasm. I was convinced that a hybrid system would be too complicated, too big and too expensive to build.” But, as Moonen explains, the Imtech engineers did not share his opinion and set out to change his mind. "They developed the hybrid system’s layout with my concerns as starting point," he explains. "When I saw the first technical layout and reviewed the space requirements, the enthusiasm started to grow, especially when we reviewed the overall efficiency data. It was impossible not to be excited by the enormous potential of the system.” Fundamentally, the team have created what Moonen describes as a "sort of integrated platform" concept, looking at every single aspect and every detail rather than just focusing on a single subject. During the development of the system, Imtech were able to unravel the initial intricacy of the Hybrid system and fashion it into a more compact and practical component. Additionally, the Ghost G180H uses two entirely new electric Voith Inline Propulsors (VIP) of 750kw each, which are high efficiency, hubless, steerable pods that have an integrated electric motor and eliminate the need for propeller shafts and rudders. Significantly, they have never been used on a vessel before. It all results in an exceedingly quiet and vibration-free propulsion system. Add Van Oossanen & Associates' Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF), which offers the required efficiency to operate a large yacht with a comparatively modest propulsion power and, according to Ghost Yachts, you have the perfect combination for a sustainable and economical yacht. We look forward on future projects from Ghost, particularly a 54-metre sailing yacht which promises to also focus on efficiency. To view our post on the G180V click here |

LA 2010: Honda debuts Fit EV concept, production version coming in 2012 Posted: 17 Nov 2010 07:00 PM PST Filed under: Concept Cars, LA Auto Show, Hatchback, Honda, Electric Honda Fit EV concept – Click above for high-res image gallery We were a bit miffed at the Paris Motor Show this year when Honda debuted its Visually, the Fit EV doesn’t stray too far from the design language we’ve come to know from the gasoline-powered hatchback, albeit with a few concept-y touches thrown in for good measure. Interior refinement is standard-grade Fit spec, as well, with a modified gauge cluster showing battery and efficiency information. Honda has outfitted the Fit EV with a version of the electric motor used in the automaker’s FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle, and we’re told that range will be around 100 miles with a top speed of 90 miles per hour. Sounds like a Nissan Leaf competitor to us. Though purely a concept right now, Honda plans to sell a production version of the Fit EV sometime in 2012, and fleet testing of the electric hatch will commence in the coming months. See the Fit EV for yourself in our galleries of live and stock shots below, and follow the jump for the full details in Honda’s press release. Mercedes Benz Fascination Concept Car Posted: 17 Nov 2010 05:31 PM PST Mercedes Benz showed off its new Fascination concept car at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. It was a fastback or shooting brake styled coupe with the roofline staying high like an estate giving very generous space in the back of the car. In reality the Fascination concept previewed the forthcoming new e-class range, having the identical front end to the production cars, and rear styling close to that of the estate, and in being a coupe itself also hinted that Mercedes would release a new E-class coupe too, which they inevitably did. The concept car used a 2.2 litre 4 cylinder diesel engine with twin turbochargers to push power to 204 horsepower whilst keeping very low emissions. |
