Ghost Yachts reveal new Hybrid Concept G180H Posted: 16 Nov 2010 10:18 PM PST Almost a year after Ghost Yachts revealed the original Ghost G180 and eight months after the Ghost 180V concept was unveiled, the team of Ghost Yachts and the Italian design studio Gloss Design have announced a new hybrid version of the G180 platform. Joining forces with Imtech Marine & Offshore, they have developed the 55-metre Ghost G180H, the company’s next step towards more sustainable, innovative and efficient superyachts. "Developing the G180H was very rewarding,” says Björn Moonen of Ghost Yachts, but he admits that he was sceptical about designing a hybrid yacht at first: “In the beginning I approached the project with suspicion rather than enthusiasm. I was convinced that a hybrid system would be too complicated, too big and too expensive to build.” But, as Moonen explains, the Imtech engineers did not share his opinion and set out to change his mind. "They developed the hybrid system’s layout with my concerns as starting point," he explains. "When I saw the first technical layout and reviewed the space requirements, the enthusiasm started to grow, especially when we reviewed the overall efficiency data. It was impossible not to be excited by the enormous potential of the system.” Fundamentally, the team have created what Moonen describes as a "sort of integrated platform" concept, looking at every single aspect and every detail rather than just focusing on a single subject. During the development of the system, Imtech were able to unravel the initial intricacy of the Hybrid system and fashion it into a more compact and practical component. Additionally, the Ghost G180H uses two entirely new electric Voith Inline Propulsors (VIP) of 750kw each, which are high efficiency, hubless, steerable pods that have an integrated electric motor and eliminate the need for propeller shafts and rudders. Significantly, they have never been used on a vessel before. It all results in an exceedingly quiet and vibration-free propulsion system. Add Van Oossanen & Associates' Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF), which offers the required efficiency to operate a large yacht with a comparatively modest propulsion power and, according to Ghost Yachts, you have the perfect combination for a sustainable and economical yacht. We look forward on future projects from Ghost, particularly a 54-metre sailing yacht which promises to also focus on efficiency. To view our post on the G180V click here |
LA 2010: Ford Focus Race Car Concept goes global Posted: 16 Nov 2010 09:40 PM PST Filed under: Concept Cars, Motorsports Ford Focus Race Car Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery Ford likes to tout the 2012 Focus‘ global credentials, because this is the first time the compact sedan and hatchback will be offered with minimal changes in nearly every market the Blue Oval operates. Interestingly, the Ford has taken a similar approach with the racing version of the Focus, which it says is designed to compete in all kinds of rally racing both in the United States and throughout the rest of the world. Power, predictably, will come from a tuned version of the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine that we’ll see in the upcoming Focus ST. You’ll find AST performance coil-over adjustable dampers at each corner holding up anthracite 18-inch wheels and Hoosier race tires. Other suspension bits include sway bars from Ford Racing with adjustable end links and front brakes with 320-millimeter two-piece rotors and race pads. Inside, a full FIA-certified roll cage is included, along with Recaro seats with six-point racing harnesses and a full electronics package for keeping track of essential data. Interestingly, Ford says it teamed up with a number of professional private racing teams to develop its Focus Race package, which means it should be highly adaptable to multiple series and formats. This car’s first appearance in competition will be at the 2011 British Touring Car Championship, but it will also circle tracks in China and at the 24-hour race at Nürburgring in Germany. Even more importantly, Ford says the upcoming 2012 Focus ST will benefit from the experience gained by racing its track-developed sibling. In addition to the Focus Race Car Concept, also hitting the LA Auto Show floor will be three Focus models tuned with various aftermarket products. One will come from Ford’s own Vehicle Personalization group while the others will be presented by FSWerks and 3dCarbon, respectively. Hit the jump for all the details in the complete press releases. Posted: 16 Nov 2010 08:46 PM PST Futuristic Bugatti Stratos Concept The mesmerizing Buggati Stratos created by the French graphic designer affirms that it is favorable to let go the tech spec considerations to create a gem of a design. Bruno was inspired by the ever so beautiful Buggati Type 57 Atlantic and that inspiration did help him weave magic. Some design cues were also picked up from the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Mille Miglia (for the front end) and Raymond Loewy's locomotive designs. I must say that it for the first time I don't really bother whether the Stratos will ever make the cut or not.

Mercedes Benz Fascination Concept Car Posted: 16 Nov 2010 03:36 PM PST Mercedes Benz showed off its new Fascination concept car at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. It was a fastback or shooting brake styled coupe with the roofline staying high like an estate giving very generous space in the back of the car. In reality the Fascination concept previewed the forthcoming new e-class range, having the identical front end to the production cars, and rear styling close to that of the estate, and in being a coupe itself also hinted that Mercedes would release a new E-class coupe too, which they inevitably did. The concept car used a 2.2 litre 4 cylinder diesel engine with twin turbochargers to push power to 204 horsepower whilst keeping very low emissions. |

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 02:38 PM PST Soon after the presentation of the individualised BMW X5, MANSORY Switzerland AG, with its sister model the BMW X6, presents in society the second Bavarian automobile to be the fortunate object of a comprehensive revamp. An exclusive bodywork, performance and interior programme has been developed and gives the SUV coupe a definitely more sporty appearance. Just as with all previous vehicles, with the BMW X6, MANSORY has paid close attention to the precise fit of parts while at the same time bearing in mind a sporty, individual design. The perfectly harmonising details turn the high demands which MANSORY makes on itself and on its products into reality and transform the wide-bodied Bavarian into a real eye-catcher. Due to a new front spoiler with larger air intakes and an extra light bonnet made entirely of carbon which, with its ventilation channels, optimises air flow to the front engine, the MANSORY X6 already looks a lot more brawny when you catch sight of it in the rear-view mirror. This impression is reinforced even more by the widened wings which flow into the newly designed side skirts and give the vehicle around 70 millimetres more width at the front and 80 millimetres at the rear. At the back a newly designed skirt comes into play using an integrated diffuser which has room for four stainless steel exhaust pipes from the MANSORY sports exhaust system. A roof spoiler for additional contact pressure and a rear spoiler lip give the MANSORY X6 more stability at high speeds. Nearly all the aerodynamic components are fabricated by the engineers from high-tensile polyurethane (PU-RIM) and from prepreg autoclave carbon, characteristic of MANSORY. In the process, the preformed carbon-fibre parts are given a permanent shape in autoclaves by the effects of vacuum and heat which guarantees a perfect surface finish with low weight. So that the overwhelming visual presence is given appropriate backup, MANSORY treats the BMW X6 M’s production engine to a performance upgrade. At around 670 HP / 493 kW and a huge torque of 950 Nm at 5900 rpm, the MANSORY X6 surpasses the original figures by a long chalk (production engine: 555 HP / 408 kW and 680 Nm at 1500 – 5650 rpm). This leap in performance is made possible by using an entirely new exhaust system complete with exhaust manifold and perfected engine electronics. The performance, too, benefits from these modifications. In a mere 4.2 seconds, the MANSORY X6 makes it from a standing start to main road speed and thanks to a Vmax override reaches a top speed of 300 kms/h. Contact with the road is via distinctive MANSORY light alloy rims. These improve the handling and highlight the vehicle’s appearance. The M10 silver-finished, cast, monoblock wheels are equipped with 315/25R23 tyres which make for the right surface grip. With progressively wound sports suspension and an adapted height adjustment, at the same time the vehicle’s centre of gravity is lowered by around 40 millimetres so that the 23″ wheels fill the wheel arches. Larger brake discs and a multi-piston brake system to improve the deceleration values of the MANSORY X6 are already at the trial stage. With the ergonomically, newly designed MANSORY Sports steering wheel, MANSORY Switzerland offers customers a special feature for the vehicle interior. Just as for all other MANSORY vehicles the same applies to the BMW X6: the customer can compose his own quite personal vehicle interior from the practically endless combinations of leather, Alcantara, wood, carbon or aluminium trim and just about any technical gadget imaginable. The in-house MANSORY leather workshop is always available to turn the customer’s wishes into reality.
