bmwclassic630 A behind the scenes look inside the BMW Classic warehouse

BMW Classic in Munich – Click above for high-res image gallery

Located just a short distance from the BMW Museum and Welt (famous as the company’s European delivery center) in Munich, Germany, is BMW Classic. According to the German automaker, “BMW Classic coordinates all activities that are connected with the company’s varied and successful history covering everything from the historical archives, assortment of aeroplanes, communication, the museum and BMW’s role in the international club scene.” In a nutshell, BMW Classic is tasked with archiving, restoring and preserving the company’s ninety-year manufacturing history.

Earlier this year, the BMW Classic Center opened its doors to the public offering a full range of classic parts, restoration services and vehicle authentication. While local dealerships will continue to stock late model parts and accessories, BMW Classic is tasked with keeping an inventory part supply for vehicles (including motorcycles) that are generally more than fifteen years old. Not only are 30,000-plus components kept on hand, but the tooling that is relevant for subsequent fabrication is held at the facility as well. In addition, there are on-site restoration services, using 100 percent original parts, upholstery and paint, at prices that are very competitive to local shops (especially when you consider that BMW Classic Center is a one-stop shop for a turn-key restoration process).

While the downstairs shop area is in a constant flurry of activity, the multi-story warehouse – where much of the really good stuff is stored – is unfortunately closed to the public. However, thanks to a special invite, Autoblog was recently escorted on a private behind-the-scenes tour of the facility.

Viewed from the outside, the building is nothing spectacular. Yet, hidden inside its concrete walls are several floors of immaculately restored and preserved engines, motorcycles and automobiles. In addition to some of the company’s most classic offerings, such as the BMW 507 and BMW 328, we stumbled over Isetta microcars and mint-condition 2002 race cars. We found the famed E53 X5 fitted with a V12 LMR powerplant (the 700 horsepower SUV clocked a record-setting 7:49 lap around Nürburgring at the hands of Hans Stuck nearly a decade ago) and a pristine street-ready McLaren F1 (parked yards away from its race-ready F1 GTR siblings). Look past the James Bond’s genuine E38 7 Series (with highly-custom rear-seat driving controls), and you will see the fluorescent orange nose of the 1972 BMW Turbo Concept – the vehicle that inspired the BMW M1, arriving just five years later.

Our favorite has got to be an unassuming 1987 E32 7 Series, (aka the “Goldfish” 767), fitted with a prototype 6.7-liter V16 rated at 408 horsepower. The only hint to its potency are custom gill-like air intakes on each rear quarter panel – its massive engine is so long that the engineers were forced to move its cooling system to the trunk.

Take a long look through our extensive gallery, and let us know which ones are your favorites.

Mercedes F800 Style Concept Car

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 09:18 PM PDT

The F800 Style Concept Car from Mercedes Benz was designed to highlight future Mercedes technology and also give hints as to forthcoming new models such as a replacement for the Ageing Sport-Coupe that sits below the C-class sedan in the range. The F800 is a look at what a possible Compact Coupe from Mercedes Benz could look like, either in a 2 door or possible 4 door format.

The concept car itself features a minivan style sliding rear door for easy access, but this would unlikely make production. It has what Mercedes describes as a multi drive platform meaning it can accommodate electric motors along side either a range extender hybrid combustion engine, a fuel cell, or a larger amount of batteries, whichever format the customer chooses.

Armand de Brignac the World’s #1 Champagne.

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 08:29 PM PDT

armand 5 Armand de Brignac the World's #1 Champagne.

Champagne sales have not been very strong over the past few years, there has been one brand however that has shown impressive figures. Jacques Cattier, president of Cattier Champagne, Armand de Brignac’s producer with just 20 staff based in the village of Chigny Les Roses in Champagne-Ardennes, found out a little celebrity endorsement can go a long way. Armand de Brignac, the brand adopted by Jay-Z, has found great success thanks to the rapper’s promotion. Jay-Z was a fan of Cristal until 2006 when Frederic Rouzaud, the managing director of Louis Roderer Cristal was quoted in The Economist calling the namechecking of the Cristal brand in hip-hop songs “unwelcome attention.” Jay-Z found the remark racist. He called for a Cristal boycott and switched his allegiance to the new brand Armand de Brignac, part of Cattier Champagne. He featured the distinctive gold bottle with the Ace of Spades logo in his video to his single “Show Me What You Got” in 2006. Celebrity endorsements are particularly powerful in the rap world. The song “Pass The Courvoisier” by Busta Rhymes sent sales of the French cognac soaring.

Armand de Brignac 2 Armand de Brignac the World's #1 Champagne.

Since then the brand has taken off, showing up in celebrity gift bags and becoming a new symbol of extravagant taste. David Beckham and George Clooney are among those won over to Armand de Brignac, which is referred to by drinkers as “Ace of Spades”. The Independent, reports that demand is so high that the winery could sell their 60,000-bottle production run several times over. The brand will reach its maximum production of 82,000 within three years. The Armand de Brignac Cuvees are priced from 0 per bottle and come in three varieties, Champagne Rose, Champagne Blanc de Blanc, and the Brut Gold.

Aroma/Bouquet: Produced in a traditional, old‐world style, from grape to glass. Bouquet is complex and full‐bodied, fresh and lively with light floral notes. On the palate, Armand de Brignac has a racy fruit character perfectly integrated with subtle brioche accents. Texture is deliciously creamy, with great depth and a long, silky finish.

Awards:
Selected as the preferred Champagne of Chef Alain Llorca's Le Moulin de Mougins, Jacques Chibois' La Bastide St. Antoine, and the Pourcel Bros' Le Sens, all French Michelin‐starred restaurants.

2010 TECHART GrandGT based on the Porsche Panamera

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 08:16 PM PDT

2010 TECHART GrandGT based on the Porsche Panamera
Based on the Porsche Panamera, the TECHART GrandGT combines all of the features, for which TECHART is known, into one program – exceptional sportiness in combination with unique comfort. The masculine and extravagant level of the Panamera individualization will celebrate its world premiere at the Auto Zurich Car Show from November 11 to 14, 2010.

Exceptional Character – Visible and Invisible
Original TECHART programs have always stood for highest quality. This fundamental principle has been incorporated in TECHART’s new exterior package for the Panamera without any compromises. The consistent and intelligent use of selected high-tech materials and a unique style of design ensure that the TECHART GrandGT leverages its exceptional character.
2010 TECHART GrandGT based on the Porsche Panamera
Hidden Qualities: The Material
GT – uniquely sporty, which is embodied by the program not only in design. The GrandGT internalizes it as well. The exterior package consists of a fiber-reinforced composite based on carbon, glass-fiber-reinforced plastic and polyurethane RIM components. These materials are primarily used in motor sports and are distinguished by their extraordinary product characteristics. The exterior components of the TECHART GrandGT program are remarkable, among other things, thanks to an impressive dimensional stability, great strength and low intrinsic weight.
Impressive Appearance: The Design
The TECHART GrandGT favors a spectacular performance. The TECHART-typical exterior design catches the eye of onlookers immediately. The powerful front bumper with integrated splitter and large ventilation intakes, for an improved supply of fresh air to the intercooler and an optimum cooling of the brake system, flawlessly underlines the dynamic contours. TECHART-typical: the sporty four-seater’s suitability for everyday use. The multifunctional daytime running lights that are integrated in the front bumper give the Panamera not only a distinctive appearance. It combines daytime running lights, position lights, parking lights and turn signals as LED system unit in a common housing and integrates seamlessly in the design of the Panamera’s front. An additional design highlight is the TECHART Aero engine hood that is constructed of high-quality carbon fibers, with integrated air outlets for an optimized regulation of the heat balance in the engine compartment and which impressively completes the GrandGT program for the Panamera’s front end.
Powerful side skirts and flared fenders increase the width of the Panamera by 21mm on each side of the front axle compared to the standard vehicle and 42mm on each side of the rear axle, resulting in a wider track and thus improved cornering abilities. Typical TECHART: attention to detail. Headlight trims or trim slats for the side air outlets made of high-quality polyurethane RIM set elegant highlights on the side of the vehicle in individual colour combinations and emphasize the dynamic appearance of the GrandGT.
The design of the rear end incorporates the front’s design and emphasizes the unique character of the GrandGT – sporty, confident and masculine. In combination with the TECHART roof spoiler, the much larger rear spoiler compared to the first Panamera Program, results in even less lift at the rear axle and greater driving stability and active safety – even at high speed. An additional GrandGT design feature: the distinctive rear apron with integrated air openings and matching diffuser. The oval dual tail pipes of TECHART’s sporty exhaust system, which are fully integrated in the vehicle’s rear end, optimally complete the exterior tuning package. As an alternative, a sporty exhaust system with valve control can be selected – for audible more sportiness.
2010 TECHART GrandGT based on the Porsche Panamera
Exceptional Sportiness: The Performance
Taking a look under the Aero-engine hood, the GrandGT is still impressive. The TECHART Engine styling package consisting of carbon fiber cylinder-head covers with an embossed TECHART logotype as well as accentuating highlights in flash red is demonstrating the power of the car already in standstill. The TECHART powerkit TA 070/T1 boosts the power output oft the 4.8 l twin-turbo engine from 368 kW to 426 kW. The generated torque increases from 700 Nm to powerful 830 Nm. Pushing the standard sport button the Panamera has a significant increase of performance and driving dynamics. The TECHART engine management TECHTRONIC comes up with a number of impressive product features. The intelligent electronic power management convinces with quick and easy installation as well as maintaining the electronic engine protection features and the vehicle diagnostics and servicing. Like every factory-new TECHART product, the high quality standard of the TECHART powerkit is backed by a two-year limited warranty. Furthermore TECHART grants an additional warranty on damages at engine or gearbox if caused by the TECHART powerkit.
Consistent design and inimitable style – this also applies to the original TECHART wheels. No matter which of the three wheel designs the customer will choose, besides attractive standard colour variants, all TECHART wheels are available in individually matched custom colours. For the TECHART GrandGT Program the TECHART Formula light alloy wheels are available in 20- and 21-inch, the TECHART Formula II design in 22-inch and the TECHART Formula III forged light alloy wheels in 21- and 22-inch.
Unique Comfort – The Interior
The passion for perfection and the use of high-quality materials form the focal point of interior individualization of the TECHART GrandGT based on the Porsche Panamera. TECHART interiors are distinguished by exceptional quality. Ranging from setting fine accents such as decorative stitching in custom colour or parts in fine wood trim through to unique interior packages refined in all details, care and precision in the workmanship provided by the TECHART in-house manufactory are unique.
TECHART guarantees a great ride at all four seats thanks to the wide variety of entertainment options available for the Panamera. For instance, TECHART offers, among other things, an entertainment package with two 7-inch screens that are seamlessly integrated in the design of the front seat backrests, incorporated in a high-quality leather screen console matching the colour of the vehicle’s interior, for entertainment in the rear passenger compartment of the four-seater. A highlight for the Panamera: the TECHART center console unit for adding a 12V outlet and integrated cupholder to the storage compartment located in the rear passenger compartment. Exclusively available for the Panamera: TECHART rear fold-away tables. Thanks to rugged mechanisms and high-quality materials, the fold-away tables can be used, on the one hand, as a mobile work space for when on the road and as a personal area for relaxing when on long trips.
Premiere in Zurich and Essen
The TECHART GrandGT Program as well as the new TECHART MAGNUM will be presented in November. From the 11. to the 14. November 201 the Auto Zurich Car Show will be the location of the world premiere. The Germany premiere of both individualization programs will be the Essen Motor Show from the 27. November to the 5. December 2010.
