How to check if my Wifi is hacked

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 12:23 PM PDT

Dear Friends,

I have just installed a wireless router model TP Link TL-WR740N at a friend's place with whatever knowledge I have. I just want to know how one can check if someone else is using this router illegally to access the internet? As far as I know, I just open this page to access router settings in a web broswer

192.168.0.1 and click on the left on a link called DHCP Clients List and check whether all the listed MAC addresses belong to the pcs that I own. Am doing the right thing here? Suppose there is a MAC address that does not belong to any of my devices (pc, laptop, mobile) then I assume someone has hacked my wifi and he is using it illegally, am I right? Please guide me.

I have tried to attach a screenshot to help you understand as to how I check whether my wifi has been hacked or not and/or whether someone is using it illegally. Bu I have failed to do so. Help me out. Thanks a lot.

What Mobile Operating System Are You?

Windows Phone might be NSA proof ;-)

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 12:02 PM PDT

http://blogs.computerworld.com/windows-phone/23446/one-benefit-windows-phone-nsa-may-not-be-snooping-you

If you own a Windows Phone, the NSA may not bother to snoop on you, even as the intelligence agency gathers vast amounts of information from apps leaking from iOS and Android phones. In all of the revelations about the NSA and its British counterpart collecting data leaking from phone apps, not a single mention has been made of snooping on Windows Phones.

...

Note that in both instances, what the NSA calls Warrior Pride was ported to the smartphone platform. Warrior Pride is the name of spyware kits for use on the iPhone and Android phones.Windows Phone wasn't mentioned in the slides in the 2010 presentation. Neither were any Microsoft-created forerunners of Window Phone, such as Windows Mobile.

In another set of NSA slides published by the New York Times, the Blackberry and Symbian phone operating systems were mentioned, although they doesn't detail precisely what information is gathered from those phones, aside from targeting Blackberry PINs.

Notice something missing in all this? That's right -- Windows Phone. In all the reporting and all of the documents published, not a single word said Windows Phone or its apps were targeted. Neither was Windows Mobile or any other forerunners of Windows Phone. The reason is likely that Windows Phone simply doesn't have a large enough installed base. So according to these documents, at least, if you're a Windows Phone user, the NSA isn't interested, at least it wasn't at the time the documents were put together.

Either Windows Phone are really NSA proof, or NSA also thinks (like BlackBerry) that Windows Phone users are minority community :D

BSNL Broadband: How to Troubleshoot Frequent Disconnection

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 11:29 AM PDT

1. Post your SNR and Attenuation values. Table for speed less than 8 Mbps

Posted Image
If your values are bad, ask the line man to give a clean line. Make sure there are no joints or non insulated parts.

2. Make sure all connections come after splitter. Follow this diagram

Posted Image

Bypass the splitter, connect the line directly to the modem and check.

3. Check if splitter or ethernet cable is faulty. Use a spare one and check.

4. If possible get a friend's modem and check. That will confirm if modem is faulty or not.

5. Do you get power reset ? If yes, check modem's power adpater and make sure it is functioning well.

6. Try GDMT mode in modem and check.

Why cant be Dlink Modem used as a Dedicated Router?

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 11:06 AM PDT

Hello Everyone.

I am working with BSNL as a Broadband technician for the last 2 years and ive came aross all kind of modem+routers but the most peculiar i find belong to Dlink.

Whenever i try to pair Dlink DSL modem+router (4 port) with any other service provider like Airtel or our local ISP Ortel i find that most of the time the Dlink fails to work.

Recently one of my clients wanted wireless capabilities for his Ortel Cable Internet . and brought a Dlink 2750u Dual Antenna Modem +Router (4 port with DSL, its a new model not the older one). Upon configuring the device i found that only the LAN sharing was working and the wireless was not working.

So, i brought another Dlink 2750u from the office (a 3 year older  model, single antenna). After following all the steps exactly as before this time the wireless was working but not the Lan.

I called up Dlinks customer support and they told 2750u is only for BSNL. i have worked with all kind of modems from a whole different range of companies ranging from TP-LInk to Digisol to our own BSNL modem. there is no problems configuring them as a dedicated router. why does the problem exists with Dlinks modem?

Or is there anything specific i have to do with Dlinks modem? have anyone else faced any kind of similar problem?

Would be grateful if anyone can help me. i really need to answer  my clients haha

Just for a quick reference here is how i configured them:

Lan cable from cable modem to dlink modem- bringing dlinks ip range in accordance  to the cable modems ip. DHCP, NAT, tried both enabling and disabling them. no effect.

Do i need to do anything with the "Layer 2 Interface"  or "WAN service" ?

is it possible to have alternative power source for Router?

Can we use out put of emergency light to power router which needs 12V*1Amp?

Windows Phone 8.1

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 10:51 AM PDT

http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/08/windows-phone-notifications/

You know how it goes, you buy a phone on eBay, and it comes with a developer / pre-release version of a major mobile OS. Well, if these images are to be believed, that's at least what happened to one bargain-hunting Windows Phone fan. The screenshots -- said to be taken from a Nokia 920 -- show Windows Phone 8, but with a few new tweaks and features. Most notable, will likely be the notifications, but other tidbits include App list ordering based on frequency of use, week view in the calendar and the option to kill apps from the multitask screen. The phone reports a build number of: 12084.WPMAIN(wpbldlab).20130509-1407 leading some to infer that this version could have been compiled sometime in May. A tease of something to come? As always, hard to tell, but expect the price of second-hand 920s to bump up a little, for the next few weeks at least.

Super Confused, Wifi Broadband users, help me understand

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 10:47 AM PDT

Recently 2 wireless broadband providers reached my area.

both have ultra expensive plans where they charge approx 1000/month for 512kbps unlimited.

Now apart from this fee they are asking 3000 as Non-refundable installation charges.

which includes, Setting up a Pole on rooftop with access point/antenna along PoE from which a LAN cable would run to my

laptop or desktop.

However I am not understanding, when my laptop is able to get their WI-FI signals, why should there be this Antenna etc

on my rooftop, Talked to the one who has 80% signal strength at my work desk already, but he says you cannot connect to our

network without access point setup on rooftop and lan cable running from it to laptop.

The Station he has setup is 200 mtrs by road and even closer when measured as Line of Sight, as its visible from my window.

my question is :-

1). Do i really need to have it installed ?? or he's taking me for a ride for that 3000

2). Can I manage to connect to such provider using my existing equipment which is

a).TP Link 3G Router (MR 3420)which currently serves me as wi-fi and connects to internet thru USB Dongle.

B) A Old BSNL Nokia Siemens SL2_141 (can it be converted to access point which he's referring to ?)

c). Netgear WG111v3 USB Wireless Adapter, which I used on ancient laptop which didn't had WI-FI inbuilt.

d) Laptops, already able to get their SSID with signals from 75-80%

I am so fed up with this 3G expense that I want to get this damn stupid connection and at-least save bandwidth on normal day to day surfing and for important speedy work I'll use 3G.

16th Lok Sabha General Elections of India

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 09:53 AM PDT

General Elections for electing 16th Loksabha members would happen in 1 year from now. It may even happen within 1 year as well if situation arises like current govt decides to call early elections or looses majority if coalition partners pull off support (which is less likely). So who could it be forming new govt? BJP or Congress? NDA or UPA? Narendra Modi or Rahul Gandhi? Sushma Swaraj or Manmohan Singh? Arun Jaitley or P. Chidambaram? What impact Arvind Kejriwal would have on these elections? And finally will any 3rd front succeed in forming govt at Centre?

selling my thinkpads t60, 2 no's, x60, 1 no's.

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 09:34 AM PDT

I got thinkpad t60 3 numbers, and x60 2 numbers.

I will sell one at the moment, if it goes well, i will sell other laptops too.

Now i am done playing with these devices.

i am porting coreboot to t410, t420, t430 so i dont have much time to spend and play with these old lovely toys anymore.

few things to note about this device :

it runs coreboot instead of lenovo/ibm oem bios. bios chip was originally 2 MB replaced with 4 MB.

the bios or coreboot firmware contains linux kernel. i.e. linux kernel itself is the bootloader.

so no need to install a special bootloader.

if requested i can remove the linux kernel and i can install grub with 4096 bit PKI encryption signed seabios synced with the TPM chipset.

if you want i can even include slic 2.1 to activate windows (honestly i have never installed windows 7, so i cant confirm the stability/performance)

linux : any you feel like.... debian/ubuntu/sidux/rhel or its clones like centos/whitebox.

hackintosh? mmmmmm, may be, i need to readjust the acpi table and fool the installer cd thinking its a genuine mac... (law breaking so your choice and also headache and responsibility). If you want hackintosh, then you will deal with legal authorities. I dont know you, nor do i care about you.

Current config : Core2Duo t7200, 4 gig ram, 160 gig hdd, rest of info in the dmidecode and biosdecode info, heatsink modified and a copper coin is placed to keep it cool. But it at times it gets massively hot and shuts down, esply when i am compiling gcc and glibc.

normal usage should make it stay within 40-60 degrees, heavy compilation and multi threaded development will heat the cpu up and also video transcoding using multi thread is a no no, unless you are inside temperature controlled room.

BIOS Update Utility
7iuj17us.exe
2.26 MB

original chip is only 2 MB but the upgraded chips is 4 MB.

WARNING: the thinkpad OEM bios can no longer be used on this laptop.

The bios chip and the bios/coreboot firmware is way much more superior.

If there are requests for chromium firmware, i can do that.

I purchased each for 85,000 in 2008, and i had made heavy investments on hardware upgrade. So i am expecting a minimum of atleast 20-25K, but more than 25K INR is always a welcome.

If you request i can roll a bios for you on a weekly basis. If you wish to upgrade it on a weekly basis.

I can configure this laptop, with whichever linux ®/Unix ® you need, with almost everything configured out of the box.

But if you screw up the upgrade process, then you need to open the laptop and reprogram the chip, so i am expecting only chennai buyers (max bangalore/hyderabad). Non chennai buyers if you screw up the bios upgrade? then you need to reprogram the chip manually using a buspirate else send it back to me so i can reprogram it and send it over to you, you pay for the too-fro shipping.

bios is not lenovo bios, hence all restrictions are removed, each and every restrictions are removed, and the bios is signed with 8192 bit PKI encryption, so your key your laptop and your bios. And it also got the prey configured, so that if its lost you can track it yourself.

i can fix this laptop if you screw it up, if you are in chennai, provided you dont fiddle with the hardware, like changing et al (dont try to act/be smart, remember quackquack is a fool).

any questions? drop in a pm or ask here.

p.s. damn forgot the most important things.

the laptop boots from cold boot to boot loader in less than 1 seconds. the OEM bios boots up in 20-30 seconds. plus they are never updated regularly, here you will get update when you wish, if not interested in weekly update.

the firmware/bios is opensource.

all hardware restrictions are removed.

if your soldering skills are excellent? then you can add a 3g/4g mini pci card, and it has the provision for sim card.

it does on the fly encryption of your hard drive.

better security, because hardware rootkits are removed, which pleague the OEM bios. i.e. computrace, which is a rootkit.

can install tiaocore's UEFI firmware on top of this, for windows 8/8.1 and server 2012/r2 work like a charm (havent tested)!

can install a mini/micro LFS distribution on the bios chip, so it can be almost instant on from power on to login prompt in less than 30 seconds (like the latest modern SSD laptops vix thinkpad carbon)

lastly the silver acrtic paste and a copper coin and a silver coin on top of the cpu, which connects the heat sink keeps it way under control.

its a massive hacked device (hacked as in positive side of development)!

battery life is 2 hours plus.

Buying and Selling products through OLX

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 08:24 AM PDT

I am giving it a second try. I listed my 2012 Google Nexus 7 3G 2 days ago. Just got one query. But as expected, it was quite absurd. He wants me to drop the price 40%. Claims to have Google as his client. Says Google is offering him the 2013 edition of the 3G variant for Rs. 18000 (US price is going to be above Rs. 22000). It's fun. I told him to get it because it is an excellent deal. He said he is planning on getting that but wanted a backup device for testing. I am assuming he is an Android developer and if he is right, Google seems to be offering the new model at pretty amazing prices to developers here in India even before it is launched in the US market.

Listed two more products for variety. I know people here have had much success with OLX. Share your stories!

Scammers on eBay India

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 08:20 AM PDT

I was looking to buy a tablet and saw a Nexus 7 with Wi-Fi and 3G 2013 version at a great price and sorta impulse bought the item. Bad decision. The item was not shipped for 5 days, the scamsters website was blocked by my antivirus and the guy insisted the tab had a sim slot when infact the Cellular version is yet to be launched.

No real damages done financially as the refund has been initiated by the system, apart from losing a week and a half, I guess.

MORAL : Stay away from new sellers, I know some or what the heck most may be legit, but its not worth it. And if something is too good to be true, it probably is.

Apologies if this is in the wrong spot.

I'm looking for suggestions for a decent hosting provider for a windows VPS. Its for a small client so budget is bit tight (under $500/yr). was looking at znet as i already have a shared hosting with them, however I'm not super impressed with their services.

Any suggestions welcome guys.

Hacked my cheap USB hub, now works as Powered HUB

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 07:59 AM PDT

of all these days I was using USB hub for only connecting a device but once I moved a couple of things

to this Cheapo Hub, everything was getting connected and then disconnected again and again,

reason was obvious USB power available from Laptop was not enough to drive all these devices together.

So I opened my Rs.100 Hub and inserted a few components and Now Its working fine with multiple devices running at the same time.

Powered by our evergreen Nokia Slim PIN charger  :peaceful:

Now Connecting without any error USB Mouse + android + chill pad (thermal master) + a USB Pen Drive/Laserjet , all together never worked earlier on this HUB, they worked like a charm.

if anyone else here has D.I.Y. itch like I have, please feel free to post your questions.

I used following parts
1 x Blue 3mm L.E.D.
1 x 33 ohm 1/4w resistor
1 x IN4007 Dioide
1 x Nokia power jack (female)

Total cost Rs.5/-

The diode is used in +5V wire coming from PC USB port, so power from external source is not sent back to laptop which would
have resulted in hardware malfunction.
