The traditional Boxing Day Test returns to South African shores for the 2013-14 season with India scheduled to play the first of three Tests in the home summer. CSA cancelled the fixture last season and opted to play three T20s against New Zealand over the festive period instead in the hope of attracting bigger in-stadium audiences. Although the matches were sell-outs, there was a public outcry about the lack of a Test match and with India visiting this season, the administrators have reinstalled the fixture and handed it back to its usual home, Kingsmead in Durban.

Buying and Selling products through OLX

Posted: 27 Dec 2013 10:11 AM PST

I am giving it a second try. I listed my 2012 Google Nexus 7 3G 2 days ago. Just got one query. But as expected, it was quite absurd. He wants me to drop the price 40%. Claims to have Google as his client. Says Google is offering him the 2013 edition of the 3G variant for Rs. 18000 (US price is going to be above Rs. 22000). It's fun. I told him to get it because it is an excellent deal. He said he is planning on getting that but wanted a backup device for testing. I am assuming he is an Android developer and if he is right, Google seems to be offering the new model at pretty amazing prices to developers here in India even before it is launched in the US market.

Listed two more products for variety. I know people here have had much success with OLX. Share your stories!

Liquor to compensate for low power tariffs in Delhi

Posted: 27 Dec 2013 09:56 AM PST

With the AAP announcing cut in power tariffs by 50 per cent, the burden on the government is going to increase. To make for the power department's loss, Kejriwal has decided to increase excise duty on liquor, VAT and luxury tax.
The Delhi government currently earns about Rs 325 crore revenue from luxury tax, Rs 3,000 crore from excise and about Rs 67 crore from entertainment tax. However to cut power tariffs, the government will now have to increase these taxes.

Kejriwal has also asked honest officials and employees of Delhi government to contact him through SMS or email so that they can be deployed at places where they can work to solve Delhi's problems. "I would request them to contact me through SMS or email, we will depute good people at good places and want to move ahead with them. I don't have a magic wand to solve all the problems, but if good, honest and efficient people join us nothing is impossible," he said.

Very Disappointed with ACT, 8 days No connection yet

Posted: 27 Dec 2013 09:47 AM PST

I had applied for a new connection on 18th Dec. I had given an advance of Rs. 7410 in cash to Murthy (employee id - 1667) with necessary documents. He promised me a connection with 3-4 days and maximum 7 days.

Nobody has contacted me after that day, neither have i have been given a customer id or a ticket number. I called the customer service on 4284 0000 multiple times, 4-5 times who haven't done anything. They just tell, they will forward the complaint to the concerned department and yet after that nothing has happened nor anyone has contacted me.

I have lost my patience you people. I could have gotten a connection from another ISP by now. After this ordeal and begging ACT to give me a connection, i will not suggest act to any of my friends or family.

I have used BSNL, Hathway & You till now. Among all worst is YOU. Now yet to try Airtel & ACT.

If you have which is better among Airtel & ACT, let me know. All I need is properly working connection.

MS staff

There was a pilot flying a small single engine charter plane, with a couple of very important executives on board. He was coming into Seattle airport through thick fog with less than 10m visibility when his instruments went out. So he began circling around looking for landmark. After an hour or so, he starts running pretty low on fuel and the passengers are getting very nervous. Finally, a small opening in the fog appears and he sees a tall building with one guy working alone on the fifth floor. The pilot banks the plane around, rolls down the window and shouts to the guy "Hey! Where am I?" To this, the solitary office worker replies "You're in a plane." The pilot rolls up the window, executes a 275 degree turn and proceeds to execute a perfect blind landing on the runway of the airport 5 miles away. Just as the plane stops, so does the engine as the fuel has run out.

The passengers are amazed and one asks how he did it. "Simple" replies the pilot, "I asked the guy in that building a simple question. The answer he gave me was 100 percent correct but absolutely useless, therefore that must be Microsoft's support office and from there the airport is just a while away."

Is Windows a virus?

No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:
They replicate quickly Okay, Windows does that

Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so okay, Windows does that

Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk Okay, Windows does that, too

Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems Sigh... Windows does that, too

Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware Yup, that's with Windows, too

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature

So, Windows is *not* a virus

Hathway needs Cable Connection to give Internet?

Posted: 27 Dec 2013 03:48 AM PST

Apologies if duplicate, i did not find a thread which discusses this.

So I wanted a new internet connection in Goregaon East and I applied for Hathway. They Initially they took the form and cheque, and promised to do the installation. However, later they called back and said they cannot install broadband since "I don't subscribe to a cable connection from them". They did, however, promise to refund the money.

This sounds like an extortion scheme to me. As a customer, I should be having a choice to subscribe to internet without subscribing to cable connection (Yes, I know I am in India, but still....). I am not sure if such extortion is even legal?? Just wanted the advice of this forum on if I can do anything (more than angry tweets) to get these horrible guys to do something, or do we just have to take this lying down???

It's now 2 weeks I am trying to get a broadband connection in Goregaon. Can't believe I live in India's biggest metro....

Possible to pause the connection for a month or so ?

Posted: 27 Dec 2013 03:25 AM PST

My topup is valid till mid-january. If I am going away for two months or so and not using the dish for that period, is it possible to discontiue the connection for this period?? That mean, if I am away for two months and not using the connection, can I set the connection to pause and restart after a couple of months so that the validity gets extended accordingly?

DOCOMO's 3G service is a BIG joke

Posted: 27 Dec 2013 01:54 AM PST

I just can't understand how DOCOMO managed to obtain 3G license with such pathetic 3G services. Their voice service is quite good, so no complaints about that. But DOCOMO's 3G service is almost non-existent in Karnataka (no idea about other circles).

My first issue is this ridiculous '40-minute auto disconnection' feature. I contacted customer care several times regarding this issue, but they always gave unsatisfactory responses. Finally when I sought customer support through online chat, a representative just copy-pasted the following:-

"We would like to inform you that we always strive to offer high quality services and connectivity to our esteemed subscribers. With an objective to avoid the discomfort to our subscribers due to bill shock at the end of billing tenure or excess balance deduction, the internet/GPRS session is designed to get disconnected after 40 minutes of session. This way we help you to avoid any excessive charges due internet usage abuse and GPRS/Internet session kept live ignorantly."

High quality services and connectivity? What a joke! The inside-secret is the DOCOMO's 3G infrastructure is so damn pathetic, so they have only a small number of connectivity slots available. When all these slots are filled by users, then new users will be unable to connect. Hence they have introduced this 40-minute auto disconnection, so that others users also get a chance to connect. They cleverly say it is to avoid 'bill shock', but everyone knows that it is just a lie. My company reimburses my 3G data costs, and I often need to make video calls exceeding their stupid 40 minute limit. Also, I don't understand this logic of 'bill shock' for people who have subscribed to a data pack.

The second issue is also connected to the first problem I mentioned. Due to DOCOMO's abysmal 3G infrastructure, it takes several attempts (usually 8 to 10 attempts) to connect to the internet at 3G speed. I contacted customer care for several months, but they failed to resolve this issue. Whenever I mention the issue, their common question was "What error message you get?". They don't even have the common sense to know that smartphones don't display any error messages. Only old Java handsets display those error messages. When I telll this to them, they say "how can we help you without knowing the error message?". Then they tell me to change APN settings, reinsert sim card, try the sim in a different handset etc., but nothing works. Finally, they just sent this stupid copy-paste response during online chat:-

"We would like to inform you that regarding the issue of GPRS we at Tata Docomo always strive to introduce products that are in sync with Customer requirements while ensuring that such products provide optimum value against the amounts spent by our esteemed customers. Such products, especially the data/internet usage products are dependent on various factors for accessibility and continuity, some of these factors being in our control and others beyond some factors beyond our control, but which hugely and adversely impact data usage can impact on the network and signal strength and therefore affect connection speeds/ continuity. At peak times when many people are using the network, connection speeds, and quality suffers. Also as with any network based on radio technology, handset quality or local conditions may prevent or interfere with network reception within coverage areas. However we do understand and regret the fact, that you have not had a favorable experience with the said product. For any assistance mail us at listen at tatadocomo .com"

As I mentioned previously, the reason for this is that DOCOMO's limited number of connectivity slots are almost always filled by other users, so I'm unable to connect until a slot becomes free. This is totally ridiculous.

Finally, the biggest problem. After repeated attempts to get my issues resolved with no results, they suggested me to write to the appellate officer(appellate.kk@tatadocomo.com). I did that, and got an automated reply within a few minutes, which said I would get a response within 2 working days. But I haven't got a response even after 5 working days (i excluded Saturday and Sunday). This means that there is probably no appellate officer at all for DOCOMO, and they are just maintaining a dummy appellate email id, just to send automated replies.

I agree that DOCOMO is unable to provide proper service due to its low costs. In such cases, I'm sure it would be more preferential for customers if DOCOMO hikes their prices to provide good service, rather than maintaining low prices but offering incorrigible services. I sincerely hope that Docomo does not win the 3G spectrum bidding in Karnataka during January 2014. As for me, I'll definitely be porting my number to a different operator after my current balance is exhausted.

On Tuesday, New Delhi police used tow trucks and a backhoe loader to drag away long concrete blocks from roads running past the embassy and leading up to gates of the compound, a Reuters witness said.

The low barriers had prevented vehicles from approaching the compound at high speeds and were presumably designed to help protect the embassy against attack from suicide bombers.

Bitcoin in India

Online Cash Bitcoin Could Challenge Governments, Banks - Techland - TIME.com

Bitcoin is potentially revolutionary for several reasons. For one thing, artificial currency inflation is impossible. In most countries, a central bank controls the money supply, and sometimes (such as during the recent economic crisis) it may decide to inject more money into an economy. A central bank does this essentially by printing more money. More cash in the system, however, means that the cash you already hold will be worth less. By contrast, because Bitcoin has no central authority, no one can decide to increase the money supply. The rate of new bitcoins introduced to the system is based on a public algorithm and therefore perfectly predictable.
More revolutionary perhaps is that because no intermediaries are needed for Bitcoin transactions, governments will have no intermediaries to regulate. And Bitcoin's anonymity makes it difficult for governments to go after end users directly.

"Even if the Bitcoin.org site were taken offline and the Sourceforge project removed, the currency would be unaffected. Like BitTorrent, taking down any of the individual computers that make up the peer-to-peer system would have little effect on the rest of the network. And because the currency is truly anonymous, there are no identities to trace."

Bitcoin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As opposed to conventional fiat currency, Bitcoin has no centralized issuing authority%5B14%5D. There is a limited controlled expansion of the monetary base hardcoded in the Bitcoin software, but it is predictable and known to all parties in advance.%5B4%5D Inflation cannot therefore be centrally manipulated to effect redistribution of value from general users.

Crypto Currency - Forbes.com

Bitcoin is different: It wholly replaces state-backed currencies with a digital version that's tougher to forge, cuts across international boundaries, can be stored on your hard drive instead of in a bank, and--perhaps most importantly to many of Bitcoin's users--isn't subject to the inflationary whim of whatever Federal Reserve chief decides to print more money.
"Bitcoin is designed to bring us back to a decentralized currency of the people," says Andresen, a 44-year-old software developer and entrepreneur based in Amherst, Mass. "This is like better gold than gold."

I bet RBI will ban this! but how!! there is no central core!.TO ban bitcoin is to ban internet!!
