Why 9"? - 7" Tablets have been the most popular screen size selling in the market. However, all those using it wish that the screen was bigger to get the best use of the tablet and make it more useful for everyone whether doing work or watching movies or playing games or even browsing the net. Common Screen sizes available bigger than 7" are 9.7" and 10.1". However these size screen cost are much higher as compared to 7". 9" screen is introduced in between to offer very high value to the user at much more affordable cost. i9018 iBall Slide is being introduced for below Rs 10000 mark which is a very good and appealing offering for a 9" tablet in this high USD to rupee scenario. Apart from being the 1st Dual core processor based Tablet in 9" Screen size, it also happens to be with HD screen (1024x600) to give sharper and clearer picture on the Big screen and Mali 400 GPU is bound to give superb graphic processing to give seamless and smooth video, gaming and graphics. This means that the Slide i9018's 1GB RAM internal memoryand 8GB big built in flash would have a fast, efficient processor to work with, and with the microSD slot expandable up to 32 GB, there's no looking back for app lovers.

The Offtopic Thread

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 11:29 AM PST

With the recent spurt of people going offtopic, I saw the need of this thread. :P

Here you can go offtopic as much as possible. Post whatever you want, with just one condition that at least post something sensible that someone else would reply. Don't just post crap.

Thread hijacking is totally allowed here.

That being said, I'd like to post this.

Today, while coming to office, I was listening to Radio Mirchi, and there the RJ was playing songs dedicated by the parents for their child(ren).

There's one father who dedicated the song "Kajra Re" for his son. There's another father who dedicated the song "Dhoom Machale Dhoom" for his son. Now, after those two requests, there was one mother who dedicated the song "Jaadu Jaadu" for her daughter.

Now we can see the real contrast in the choice of songs between the dads and the mom (or for the son and the daughter). What do you think which was it? Or does it indicate some kind of specific mentality?

32/42 Inch TV

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 10:49 AM PST

I'm looking for two televisions: A 32 inch one, and a 40/42 Inch one. Needs options in both categories.
Connectivity will be a Tatasky HD box, and a PS3. Also USBs from time to time. The TV should also have an option for being able to attach either a sound bar or HTS later next year.
I don't know whether a LED will be better or a LCD or Plasma. Please advise.
I'm only looking for a Samsung, Sony or LG TV. No other brand. Also I want this TV to run at least 5 years.
Budget isn't decided yet, but I doubt it'll cross 40K. Take 30-42K as a range.
Any suggestions?

Google Services: Gmail, YouTube and Google Search

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 10:28 AM PST

So, there are already a thousand applications out there which notify you of a new email on your GMail account... but may be like me you too avoided all of them for fear of them getting redundant with time. Google thought so and released its own version. No it is not powered enough to let you use GMail with your pop/imap/smtp client. So, you will still have to use a web browser to access the mails. But it does what it is supposed to do (that is notify you of any new mail) very well.

It is a small free downloadable application 281 KB in size available from GMail Notifier website. As always it is a Windows OS only application thus limiting the usage to only 95% of the web users. OK. The installer let you set the application to boot at startup and also make GMail your default mail client. Which means if you click on any mail id, the system tries to log you into GMail and present a compose window with the mail id already prefilled. Very much on the same lines as Yahoo! Desktop Mail does.

The software is simple. It resides in the system tray. If you are already logged into GMail at the time of its startup, it won't even require a manual login as it picks up the settings. I guess that is because I was using Internet Explorer for my GMail. I tried logging out, the application than required me to enter the details in a popup box. Tested with Firefox and Netscape 7.2 but the GMail Notifier just picked up the settings from Internet Explorer. Pretty much again on the expected lines. It picks up settings automatically if you are already logged in GMail in Internet Explorer. No luck with other browsers.

So, what does it exactly do? It resides in the system tray. Ask minimal settings at the moment (it does not even let you configure time duration between 2 checks) and shows a small alert window (very much like thunderbird with the much popular excerpts from the mail itself. Really cool stuff. Click on the tray icon and it opens up the mail in the browser. No needs to keep a browser window open all the time just to keep updated on the mails. You can also tell the client to check the mail manually if you do not want to wait till the next auto-update.

One issue with GMail Notifier. I have my default browser set to Opera which unfortunately is not supported by GMail yet. And the GMail Notifier insists on opening the mails in the default client. So, if I click on the icon to check my GMail it takes me to the GMail homepage where I get the routine browser not supported message. Maybe the developers of the application can add an option where the user can manually set the path to the choice of browser he would prefer the client to open to show the mails. Apart from that it works fine. Of course you cannot download mails or send mails using this utility unlike many other utilities out there but that are pretty much expected considering GMail's only source of any revenues from this service is from the adsense ads that comes on the side of the displayed mails. I think we can forgive Google for not letting us ignore them... They are not as bad as the ones that come on Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail.

Trusted computer peripherals shop in hyderabad/vijayawada

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 09:29 AM PST

I want to upgrade my pc.So pls suggest a trusted shop either in Hyderabad/Vijayawada similar to delta in chennai. It will be good if there is online ordering of the items.Pls share contact no. & address if you have.

I liked delta peripherals very much while I was in chennai.Their prices are reasonable & they maintain online price list too. They only stock few brands which are the best in the category.I can see most of the peripherals are cheaper when compared to flipkart /snapdeal /ebay.I'm little skeptical about online ordering from them since I'm now in AP.Looking for same kind of service in AP.

Now here in my town, all the dealers take about Rs500 extra if we go and buy in their shop. They tell some stories about courier charges. We all know they will get all the hardware from vijayawada/hyderabad, but they will never reveal the distributors name as its their trade secret.I'm ok if they charge Rs100-200 extra but Rs500 is too much. These people will never change.

Admiral branded shoes?

I have never heard of this brand. It appears to be British. Any ideas if it is any good? Flipkart has some good deals on sports shoes from this brand... I have to get a pair of sports shoes...

I have noticed that the pair I like weighs 360 grams for one shoe which is like 40-80 grams higher than shoes from Adidas and Nike. Maybe that is a good indication that this shoe would not be as comfortable (light)?

Spectranet FOX

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 08:42 AM PST

recently i got this spectranet connection. They did underground fiber optic cabling and started the service called spectranet FOX in my area. the plan is 12 to 16 mbps  for 6 months. looking at the speeds they will provide, i got my airtel BB service discontinued.

I AM HIGHLY DISSATISFIED WITH THE CONNECTION.

 1) promised speeds 12-16 mbps ,you never get the promised speeds throughout the day. even right now i am getting just 3-5 mbps.

why do ISPs do this? come on! if you dont want to give constant speeds then why the hell do you have to make false promises?

when they visit your home for a demonstration, such good marketing skills, overselling their product, promising this and that.

but when it comes to the connection, its very poor.

2) its a daily glitch in the connection. from timings 9 pm to 12 pm i always get very low speeds like 1 mbps and very high pings touching 200 ms. i've got to play online games , but with such a pathetic ping im not able to play the games properly. and this is very irritating!

and this happens everyday

3) when i had the airtel connection i used to watch alot of youtube, surf internet and the data limit was 8 gb. with these activities not even half of my data limit was used, and around 4-5 gb was left unused per month.seldom, i used to download movies because once the data limit was reached, then speed degraded to 256kpbs(reason to change spectranet ISP). using this connection, in last 1 week the 5 gb of data usage has been shown in my spectranet account(5gb data volume used)

i myself have downloaded around 700mb of data THAT'S IT! i can accept even if i had watched 1080p HD videos on youtube, i could accept that i could've consumed data but still cant find what has used 5gb. if it could've been a theft over wi-fi, but whenever i am at home i connect through LAN cable and switch of the wifi service and whenever im not at home i switch off the router. then how come 5 gb of data has been consumed?! and i cant buy this fact that ONLY net surfing at watching videos on youtube would've consumed so much of data. i really find that spectranet is a cheat on this part.

if someone using the same net plans from spectranet and facing the same issues please reply and put forward some solutions to my problem, so as how to get the promised service from my ISP.

hi ACT team

Ticket number 2101018, user id 553844

Please tell your colleagues to have some respect to our time and money.

I have made a payment of 6735 on Monday 16th Dec. Your team told that they would come on Saturday 21st and complete the setup.

But no one turned up until 6:30 in the evening and one person comes to fix a box and he says that the remaining would be done next day i.e. 22nd Sunday.

Now I wait all Sunday just for your team to turn up. Again on person comes late evening to do some work in the box and he says remaining will be done tomorrow.

I have wasted two days just waiting for your people. Most horrible part is the Sales person Sheriff who was actively answering my calls, went busy every time I call him after the payment!!.

He hasn't been responding to the calls nor your team is honouring any commitments.

Do they understand what we go through?

What kind of service is this? I'm seriously disappointed even before we start!!

Can someone help here and fix this immediately please or refund the amount.

thanks

Shivakumar

Shifting to Hyderabad from Bangalore

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 04:39 AM PST

Hi Guys,

I've been using ACT broadband in Bangalore for the past 4 months and have been really happy with their service. However, i now need to relocate to Hyderabad and also move my Broadband connection there. There is no ACT broadband in Hyderabad, but BemeTele, which is an ACT company. At the time of taking this connection I was told that it is possible to transfer the connection to Hyderabad, but customer care is asking me to cancel my connection here and take a new one in hyderabad.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Siddarth

Fernando Alonso News and Updates

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 03:36 AM PST

Fernando Alonso topped the timesheets on his return to Renault today at Jerez lapping the Spanish circuit a tenth clear of countryman Pedro de la Rosa. It was an impressive return to the team for Alonso as he put in 70 laps with a best time of 1:19.503s.

It was a busy day for the McLaren Mercedes team with de la Rosa putting in 111 laps in his MP4-23 while Kovalainen sixth fastest, completed 130 laps in the new machine.

Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa were third and fifth fastest respectively for Ferrari with Nico Rosberg running well in his FW29 with the fourth fastest time.

Sebastian Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais proved closely matched for Toro Rosso Ferrari with the seventh and eighth fastest times while Mark Webber was ninth best in the Red Bull Renault.

Kazuke Nakajima rounded out the top ten in his Williams Toyota ahead of Timo Glock in the leading Toyota TF108 and Giancarlo Fisichella in the Force India Ferrari. Kamui Kobayashi brought up the bottom of the timesheets in the second Toyota while Super Aguri Honda did not run after problems encountered yesterday.
Renault continued its preparations for 2008 today with Fernando Alonso taking over driving responsibilities from Nelson Piquet.

It was an important day as it was Alonso's first appearance in Renault colours since being confirmed as a 2008 race driver in December.

Arriving at the Jerez circuit yesterday evening, the Spaniard spoke to the engineers to understand how the first day of the programme had gone, and to prepare for his two days work with the team.

His first day behind the wheel gave the Spaniard the opportunity to drive a car in accordance with the 2008 electronic regulations, and most significantly without traction control. It was also a good opportunity to reacclimatise to the team with which he has worked for six years in the past.

At the end of the session, having covered 70 laps, the overall result was an encouraging first day as Alonso topped the timesheet with a best lap of 1:19.503s.

Fernando Alonso
"The result of my first day in the car is encouraging. I could not wait to drive again, but at the same time I was a bit tentative. I quickly settled back in to the team and everything went well. We made good progress throughout the day, but there is a lot still to do. I had to adapt at first to the car and get used to driving the car without traction control, but I am convinced that that soon I will be used to this and will not remember what is was like to drive with traction control."

Hamilton pleased after maiden MP4-23 run

10 Jan 2008

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton is feeling positive after completing his first laps in the team's 2008 challenger, the MP4-23, on Thursday. Hamilton was in action at Jerez alongside new team mate Heikki Kovalainen, as the British squad continued their three-day private test at the Spanish circuit.

"It was fantastic to get my hands on the MP4-23 this morning in Jerez," said the 23 year-old. "I saw the completed car for the first time on Monday at the team's launch in Stuttgart and I have been pretty impatient since then! My first run was at 09:10 and my first impressions are encouraging.

"I covered over 103 laps, which is 456kms, today. Considering this is only the second day the car has been on track, I am pretty happy with that. We have a lot of work to do, but now we have a real understanding of where we are starting from. I will be back in the MP4-23 with Heikki tomorrow and I am looking forward to continuing the programme and moving forward."

Kovalainen, who got his first taste of the new car on Wednesday, alongside tester Pedro de la Rosa, was equally pleased with his own progress.

"Today was my second day with the MP4-23 and I have now been able to complete over 447kms in total," said the Finn. "We are all still spending time learning about the car and starting to get used to it. That we were on track for 204 laps in total today is definitely helping us to learn and progress with the car.

"For me in particular the car is very different from last year, and I have been focusing on that side of things. Settling into the team has been very easy."

Hamilton clocked the day's best time, a 1m 19.132s, while Kovalainen's best lap was completed in 1m 19.462s. The duo will continue to test at the track on Friday.

Hathway needs Cable Connection to give Internet?

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 01:32 AM PST

Apologies if duplicate, i did not find a thread which discusses this.

So I wanted a new internet connection in Goregaon East and I applied for Hathway. They Initially they took the form and cheque, and promised to do the installation. However, later they called back and said they cannot install broadband since "I don't subscribe to a cable connection from them". They did, however, promise to refund the money.

This sounds like an extortion scheme to me. As a customer, I should be having a choice to subscribe to internet without subscribing to cable connection (Yes, I know I am in India, but still....). I am not sure if such extortion is even legal?? Just wanted the advice of this forum on if I can do anything (more than angry tweets) to get these horrible guys to do something, or do we just have to take this lying down???

It's now 2 weeks I am trying to get a broadband connection in Goregaon. Can't believe I live in India's biggest metro....

Need a wireless broadband for streaming videos.

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 12:43 AM PST

Hi, I live in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Here in the city there are many ISP available but my area is not feasible by any ISP except BSNL and here BSNL broadband( wire-line) really sucks. Its upload speed is pathetic. Right now I am using BSNL Evdo its good for download but upload speed, I really don't except more from it.

Even in this city only reliance broadband have good upload speed which gives near 1 mbps upload speed.

Suggest me a wireless broadband which gives me good upload speed. And also it should be unlimited. 3G and MTS like EVDO services are not unlimited and they are too much expensive.

I only had seen a video on YouTube of Reliance WiMax which gives more than 1 mbps upload speed. But only one video which is not sufficient for trusting.

What I need only good upload speed.

Creating this thread as I couldn't find one.

My second purchase from Lenskart.  Had ordered prescription glasses.  The whole experience was smooth as the the first one.  Placed the order on 18th December and got the delivery today (took longer than usual maybe due to GOSF).  Quality is pretty good.  Costed me 3.3 grands (after using 1000 reward points).
