India removes barriers to U.S. embassy

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 11:49 AM PST

I am not sure what I think about this...

On Tuesday, New Delhi police used tow trucks and a backhoe loader to drag away long concrete blocks from roads running past the embassy and leading up to gates of the compound, a Reuters witness said.

The low barriers had prevented vehicles from approaching the compound at high speeds and were presumably designed to help protect the embassy against attack from suicide bombers.

What kind of childish nonsense is this?

Suggest me a broadband plan .

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 11:33 AM PST

Hi all ,
Currently I am using BSNL and I am on ULD 950 Plan ( 4mbps till 8 gb post 512kbps FUP) .
I am from Jabalpur MP . Here only few ISP's are available .

1. BSNL
2. Airtel
3. Tikona

I am on BSNL and Tikona's network is not available in my locality . I want to opt for Airtel if these conditions gets satisfied :

1. Ping < 60 [ I play CS online and Pings are important ]
2. Support and Stability is criteria .
3. Unlimited plan .

In 950 rs I get 8gb at 4mbps which gets consumed within first week and the rest 20 days sucks at 512kbps . Even 360P videos are not stream able , forget about downloading movies :\ .

My monthly budget is Rs 1000 max .

So Airtel users I need your help ,
Kindly help me in following issues :

1. Does airtel provides good ping ?
2. What speed you get , I mean according to plan or any fluctuations ?
3. Which plan you are on and it will be great if you post a speed test result with Mumbai ( Vodafone/ Joister ) preferred.

Apart from this kindly suggest me a good unlimited plan for home use . I surfed the website but the plans are not as per my city .
Any plan with 2/4mbps available with good FUP ?

Please suggest and reply with your precious  comments regarding above criterion .

Kind regards
Nikhil .

New AirTel Connection @ Perungudi, Chennai

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST

A few months back, I had initiated a topic where I mused out loud re: ISPs in Chennai's Perungudi area.

http://broadbandforum.co/topic/64020-searching-for-isp-perungudi-chennai/

As it so happened, AirTel was the *only* way to go. Lazy arse clowns at BSNL threw their hands up. Reliance, two-faced twats, offered connections ONLY to corporates/offices (and refused even if I said I run a SOHO myself).

So... AirTel it had to be. And boy was it a rocky start - right from the "address/identification proof" requirement. Anyway... I must say that the fellow at the franchise office close by was a class act (thanks to him, I retained some sort of sanity).

I registered on a Thursday and was promised installation by Saturday. But the engineers didn't come till this evening (Tuesday).

I had opted for my own modem (AirTel's pay 6-months-rental-in-advance-and-stick-with-it-with-no-chance-of-plan-change can suck on my left nut!) - the engineers were scrapping around with the settings (thankfully, I had done my homework and found out what had to be tinkered with re- AirTel's ADSL/PPPoE config).

I'll skip the part where they clowned around and broke a statuette while tinkering with the junction box.

Mercifully, I am now connected... I was promised a "Welcome call", which - they said - would allow me to set my bill preferences, bill generation date and change my plan, etc. Yet to receive one.

If I try to register online, the portal sends a OTP to some other registered number and not mine! God knows what these dingbats have done! Are they re-using an old or a previously disconnected service?

Anyway... I tried calling 121/198 from the fixed line. And try as I might - keying in the fixed line with STD code *always* ends up as an error. WTF!??! Exasperating.

And I dunno if it is my luck, the Net Xpress app which the technician downloaded refuses to run (XP\SP3). I got it to run in a 'safe mode' (as opposed to rebooting the computer in safe mode), but it doesn't detect an active internet connection (there is a file being blissfully downloaded in the background). In the previous step, it had asked if I was an Airtel Technician. Not sure if this was to be done by them...

On a side note, is this application any good? (Assuming I get it to run one fine day)

Oh well... End of rant... At least I can *ahem* browse.

Hinting towards a WW2 setting? Doesn't sound like a good idea. Machine guns vs. guy with knife in a upclose and personal killing game.

This is the free version.

The app can be used to track the tv shows you are watching. You can mark the episodes you have watched. And keep an eye on episodes that are yet to be broadcast in the USA.

Comes very handy to see when the next episode of your favorite show would be broadcast.

Free version does not have ads from what I see. They suggest going for the paid version if you want to support the platform.

Benefits of the paid version:

SeriesGuide X adds more list widget options and notifications for favorited shows.

There is an option in the settings to change the timezone to your own by adding number of hours. I am yet to see what number to add. If anyone is using the app here on the forum please tell me :D

Sony Playstation Vita

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 08:11 AM PST

They launched a new version?

Looks like it!

Sony has announced a new version of its PS Vita, just weeks after announcing a price-drop across both the US and Europe. (Japan was treated to the discount back in February.) It's 15 percent lighter and 20 percent thinner than the original model and will add an additional hour of life to the battery. The new (WiFi-only) Vita will land in Japan first, on October 10th priced at 18,980 yen (about $190). Other hardware improvements (alongside pink, black, blue, grey, lime green, and yellow color options) include a micro-USB charger -- like your smartphone -- and 1GB of onboard storage. Interestingly, the screen tech has been changed to LCD from OLED, but we'll have to see it in the flesh before we jump to any conclusions on performance.

Display has been downgraded from OLED to LCD lol.

The general cricket discussion thread

Why this thread?

So often, we have some random thought or point to make/discuss , and I personally sometimes skip it as I feel it is not worthy of a new thread & feel its unfair to hijack an existing thread...

Would recommend creating new thread for any big news & as usual we have threads for specific series/tournaments.. This is for something general random posts related to cricket...Kind of the Cricket Offtopic thread...

Will start with one post

Will parallel line cause issues?

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 07:12 AM PST

hi friends my house has a parallel line for the broadband landline, one in bedroom and 2nd in the hall. the bedroom line has the landline connected, however the hall does not have a phone connected  and is just idle. the broadband in charge at the exchange said that even though there is no instrument connected the parallel line would cause disconnection issues for 8mbps broadband!!! Is that true?? Am i better off getting a new line which will have no parallel line?? I am tired of this problem since last 20 days...

Airtel suspended my old premium postpaid number without intimation

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 06:56 AM PST

Hi guys, I just happened to see another example of how we Indians as a customer are cheated in India.
Airtel terminated services to my old postpaid premium number early in the morning. I joined airtel 5 months back . Customer care does not have details for the termination. They just said " we would arrange a call within 24 hrs"

I had paid for getting this premium no. Some 5 yrs back on airtel itself and moved to Vodafone after mnp. Later came back to airtel because of lack of 3G service on Vodafone in Karnataka.

This is how I have been welcomed on airtel. Now i am missing all important calls and my business is getting affected.

3G routers: Is internet always on?

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 06:13 AM PST

When I used to use a 3G dongle of Micromax, the internet used to keep getting disconnected because of which I had to keep redialing. But if I use the SIM card in my mobile, and suppose signal strength is lost for a moment, when the signal is back, the mobile will automatically connect back the 3G connection.

In a 3G to WiFi router, does the 3G connection automatically gets connected back? Or sometimes there is a need to redial or reset the router? Please tell for both kinds of router: in which 3G dongle gets plugged in and router in which SIM card gets inserted directly. In my Micromax dongle, I've to redial manually whenever internet gets disconnected; how will be the behavior when I connect this dongle to a router?

The Cubli

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 05:29 AM PST

The Cubli is a 15 × 15 × 15 cm cube that can jump up and balance on its corner. Reaction wheels mounted on three faces of the cube rotate at high angular velocities and then brake suddenly, causing the Cubli to jump up. Once the Cubli has almost reached the corner stand up position, controlled motor torques are applied to make it balance on its corner. In addition to balancing, the motor torques can also be used to achieve a controlled fall such that the Cubli can be commanded to fall in any arbitrary direction. Combining these three abilities -- jumping up, balancing, and controlled falling -- the Cubli is able to 'walk'.

This work was carried out at the Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control, ETH Zurich, Switzerland.
