I wanted to start a new experience thread simply to discuss MTNL VDSL.

Some things to consider before/after taking a new VDSL connection

 

SNR margins (SNRM)
Below 9 dB : Poor experience with lots of HEC and CRC errors. Line will disconnect frequently.
9   - 11  dB : Ok but not ideal. Disconnections will be there if some unexpected variance is introduced by rains, humidity in the wire.
12 - 16  dB : Ideal and realistic value. Expect almost no disconnections as the line has more wiggle room for tolerating variances.
17 dB and up : God Mode. Lucky few get this on VDSL synced at 30 mbps and up. So far I have seen various stats and no one has reported this SNRM (That is because VDSL sync rates are always higher)

 

Higher you sync rate, lower the SNRM will be. Lower the SNRM, lower the connection reliability. Lower reliability means frequent disconnections. Hence ISP's have a setting in DSLAM to artificially increase SNRM value for a particular phone line. Hence you sync at lower rate and line automagically becomes stable.

 

Attenuation may not be that important after all. It reduces sync speeds over a distance but is not an indicator of connection reliability. (You can roughly calculate your line length from it. Do it here)

Apply for VDSL connection only if you are within half km. Otherwise you will get ADSL like sync rates.

I will update this entry with some of our findings. Since VDSL is somewhat new to India, this thread can help some early adopters.

 

Currently the speeds are decent for fast servers. But single streams are slow due to a bottleneck somewhere.

The answer he gave me was 100 percent correct but absolutely useless, therefore that must be Microsoft's support office and from there the airport is just a while away."

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature

Any idea, when Hathway will be starting Recording facility on SD/HD set-top boxes?

New set top box is having USB slot.  What I understand from other providers is that one needs to have external drive (min 4 GB size) to connect to set-top box and software upgrade for recordings.

I happened to check the data usage at office and around 5 GB which was downloaded on 31st October evening has been counted in November usage. One can argue that technically one can download around 5 GB from 00:00 hrs to 01:23 hrs but as said earlier, I had myself downloaded 5 GB in the evening of 31st because I had 20 GB data left.

 

Now I am already over 5 GB of my this month's quota of 25 GB.

 

So this is a clear fraud which MTNL would like to pass on as a simple website coding mistake. (By the way this applies to VDSL users too if your username ends with @a)

 

But be warned. Turn off your modem completely 10 minutes before midnight (23:50 hrs) on last day of every month. (10 minutes before because MTNL server sometimes runs 10 minutes late and the server guys keep on fiddling with server timings)

 

Guys who own this model please get this update..it's really good...will provide some changes that I feel awesome.

I am planning to switch to a wired broadband connection. but unfortunatly hathway and act are refusing to provide connection in my area. and the only provider left is BSNL now. the plans offered by BSNL are ok compared to Hathway and ACT, the only concern was the download speed post FUP and the ping rates.I also host citrix xen application (small scale deployment) from my place to be accessed at work!. Please advice.

In a Diwali bonanza to its customers, Vodafone India Thursday said it has slashed data rates by up to 80 percent across the country, with effect from November 1.
In June, the company had reduced the price from 10 paisa per 10 KB to 2 paisa per 10 KB in Karnataka, UP West and Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh circles and it has now extended the same rates to all its circles from November 1.
The company said same rates will be charged even if the customer is in roaming.

This promo has been activated on autorenewal and will be renewed'. This should have expired on 7^th Nov 2013. But today I got an sms 'Priya grahak BC 34 agle 30 dino ke liye appke account main renew ho gaya hai. Is offer ke liye aapke account se Rs 34 ka balance debit kiya gaya hai. Luft uthay ein Local mobile calls@40p/min ka 30 dino ke liye'. Please note I had not asked for this auto renewal crap. So I have lost an entire week. Looks like Vodafone systems don't know how to count. I know this cannot be a one off case but an institutionalised skimming going on but even by Vodafone standards skimming ONE ENTIRE WEEK is over the top. So anyone else who gets this 'benefit' from Voda be warned.

SUN DIRECT has blocked sound on SAKSHI TV telugu news channel from the past one month. If they decide which channel we should watch & listen and which to only watch without sound, there can be nothing more worse than that.

I'm no big fan of the Sakshi TV channel but it only exposes SUN DIRECT's antics. what prevents them from completely removing the channel from your telugu bouquet ?? instead of getting exposed as completely against Mr. Jagan Reddy's channel.
Customer care people offer all sorts of stupid solutions, like removing the AV cables and reconnecting the same etc.,, as if it is a problem specific only to you.
