Query about Medical Insurance and Term Plan

Posted: 13 Oct 2013 12:47 PM PDT

This is going to be an awkward post. So, I have a mediclaim policy that started 2 years ago and I plan to take a term plan sometime next year.

The question I want to ask is…

When I applied for medical insurance, I got a quote based on my smoking habits. I assume the premium was higher based on that.

I have not smoked for 1.5 month now. I know it does not really mean anything right now. The question I want to ask is…

Can I get a fresh quote for my existing medical insurance policy in a year or two or three based on my quitting smoking (if it stays like this by that time?).

What should I do for the term plan? Get a quote based on I am a smoker or based on I am a non-smoker? After how much time can I call myself a quitter/non-smoker to get the connected benefits in various insurance policies?

Basically, what exactly is the criteria of these companies when it comes to smokers…?

Problems with 1mbps thunder plan

Posted: 13 Oct 2013 11:42 AM PDT

I am experiencing problems with reliance thunder 1mbps the d/l speed is now 20kbps and it varies up and down sometimes i get maximum of 70 and sometimes 3 kbps i have complained regarding the same to reliance CC. A service engineer came home and said line is working fine problem lies with server call CC to solve it.Now i did that to no help getting response issue will be sorted out then i get a sms complaint has been solved now i have registered my third complaint in 3 days getting the same thing CC says service engineer and service engineer says CC and complaint is solved without consulting me. Any ideas how to get it sorted. As i feel now i am acting as a member of reliance service team rather a customer coordinating between service engineer and CC.I have also asked both of them sort it on their own to no use.

Hello

I have a pretty weird problem. I have taken 3G data pack of 3GB data. Now 3G eats battery life like anything. Can I use 2G on always on basis and switch on 3G when I specifically want to do heavy browsing like say youtube ? Will I be charged for 2G usage ?

MTNL Broadband VDSL2 User Experiences

Posted: 13 Oct 2013 10:12 AM PDT

I wanted to start a new experience thread simply to discuss MTNL VDSL.

Some things to consider before/after taking a new VDSL connection

SNR margins (SNRM)
Below 9 dB : Poor experience with lots of HEC and CRC errors. Line will disconnect frequently.
9   - 11  dB : Ok but not ideal. Disconnections will be there if some unexpected variance is introduced by rains, humidity in the wire.
12 - 16  dB : Ideal and realistic value. Expect almost no disconnections as the line has more wiggle room for tolerating variances.
17 dB and up : God Mode. Lucky few get this on VDSL synced at 30 mbps and up. So far I have seen various stats and no one has reported this SNRM (That is because VDSL sync rates are always higher)

Higher you sync rate, lower the SNRM will be. Lower the SNRM, lower the connection reliability. Lower reliability means frequent disconnections. Hence ISP's have a setting in DSLAM to artificially increase SNRM value for a particular phone line. Hence you sync at lower rate and line automagically becomes stable.

Attenuation may not be that important after all. It reduces sync speeds over a distance but is not an indicator of connection reliability. (You can roughly calculate your line length from it. Do it here)

Apply for VDSL connection only if you are within half km. Otherwise you will get ADSL like sync rates.

I will update this entry with some of our findings. Since VDSL is somewhat new to India, this thread can help some early adopters.

Currently the speeds are decent for fast servers. But single streams are slow due to a bottleneck somewhere.

Airtel 3g switches automatically to 2g

Posted: 13 Oct 2013 10:06 AM PDT

i have just activated airtel 3g on my iPhone after a long time and when i turn 3g on, it is ok for sometime and then after 2-3 mins it automatically switches to 2g, this is really frustrating as i have paid for 3g and i am living in a well developed area, not remote or 2g only zone.

How is 2G data transfer charged on 3G plans on Vodafone

Posted: 13 Oct 2013 08:05 AM PDT

I just had this query that if I recharge my phone with a 3G data pack but surf the internet on phone on 2G network then

1.  Do I get charged at pay as you use 2G rates of 10p/10kb?

2. Do I use up my limit of the 3G data pack that I have recharged?

I guess one of the two has to be applicable.. but which one??

Scammers on eBay India

Posted: 13 Oct 2013 07:34 AM PDT

I was looking to buy a tablet and saw a Nexus 7 with Wi-Fi and 3G 2013 version at a great price and sorta impulse bought the item. Bad decision. The item was not shipped for 5 days, the scamsters website was blocked by my antivirus and the guy insisted the tab had a sim slot when infact the Cellular version is yet to be launched.

No real damages done financially as the refund has been initiated by the system, apart from losing a week and a half, I guess.

MORAL : Stay away from new sellers, I know some or what the heck most may be legit, but its not worth it. And if something is too good to be true, it probably is.

In my early posts i had indicated that there are certain pilot tests going on in Pune for upcoming ISP which will offer speeds at par with other fastest ISP in India. I was lucky enough to grab some speedtest results of the pilot project.

As of now I have no clue as under what name the service is going to be launched. But i will try to find out more or the news will be available shortly because as per my information they are planning to launch within 1-2 months.

VOD not working through WiFi Netgear Dongle

Posted: 13 Oct 2013 07:08 AM PDT

I've configured my WiFi Netgear Dongle (Netgear WNCE2001) to my WiFi Internet connection. Dongle successfully connects to the WiFi router and I'm able to browse the internet using that. Router is configured with DHCP enabled in PPPoE mode. When I connect to the Tata Sky HD+ STB, the IP connection is showing successful and interestingly it's listing all the available titles under VOD. But if I give any programme for download, it never downloads. It always stuck at 0%. I've tried connecting STB directly to the router using ethernet cable. There is absolutely no issue with downloading and everything works fine. So it cannot be direct issue with the ISP provider. May not be any issue with STB also, since it's downloading when connected directly. As I mentioned before, I tried connecting to internet using the dongle, there is no issue with that browsing. So I'm not suspecting any issue with Dongle able to work with ISP provider.

Can anyone help me point out where else can it go wrong? Am I missing something here??

The highest download speed you ever reached

Posted: 13 Oct 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Once at a friend's place (hostel) there was an unsecured wifi network, and I downloaded at almost 1MBps. I would often go to his place to download. But, after 1-2 months the network became secured and so it was the end of delight. So, anyways what is the highest download speed you have ever got?

The MyColorScreen team has been hard at work creating a one-click theming app for Android known creatively as "Themer." That brief introduction pretty much sums up everything you need to know about this app. It changes the look and feel of your home screen with just one click. And no, I don't mean it just changes around a few icons. Each theme looks fundamentally different from the one that came before it.

BSNL Combo 600 Plan Free usage reduced to 750 MB? (August 2013)

Posted: 13 Oct 2013 06:38 AM PDT

Just logged in to portal to check my usage details for BBG-FN-HOME-600-COMBO-PLUS-MONTHLY_R plan (2.5 GB day usage and night unlimited) and was shocked to see that the free

usage instead of showing as 2.5 GB is showing as 750 MB!!! I have used about 970 MB till now so the charged usage is showing as 220 MB!

Very shocked and disappointed if BSNL has taken this step which is beyond belief. After waiting for many years, instead of getting a raise in

the free usage, it has been reduced to more than one third! If other people are using this plan kindly check your portal account to see if there also it is showing 750 MB? If yes then post here and if it is still 2.5 GB then I suppose there must be some issue with the site. Hope it is still 2.5 GB because 750 MB is a joke! Also people might end up getting huge bills this month if they don't know this. Quite shocked by BSNL's shamelessness as they once again made such a huge change without informing the users!

Degrading BSNL Broadband and its Infrastructure. No hope in sight :(

Posted: 13 Oct 2013 04:08 AM PDT

I have been a BSNL customer for some years now , more because its the only ISP in many parts of the south india. Starting from the later half of this year , the BSNL broadband has been slowly degrading.

Every weekend , BSNL networks starts to crumble under the load (weekend influx of users) and not until Tuesday , the network starts to come back to normal.

It been happening for past 2-3 weeks. My SNR are within normal.

Here is current ping to google dns , so inconsistent , and also so high . Usually my pings are 20-40ms , but since its monday and as i said before , pings are horrible.

BxDaaoJ.png

Routing is bad , and i dont know if bsnl is going to improve its infrastructure.

Today placed a complaint and got calls from local BSNL officer , regional officer . Regional officer had no clue what i was telling , as he kept saying my speed is 512kbps and it will soon be 4mbps coming 1st.. *facepalm* and i kept repeating the issue is with Routing and not with my speeds. I just said to tracert to one ip (valve server ) and look at the route  and see for the lagging / latency node (TATA server)

http://whois.net/ip-address-lookup/180.87.12.81

nAaOIi3.png

A simple routing from india to singapore now goes via US *morefacepalm*

Did try to contact TATA , but they said to instead contact my upstream provider , ie BSNL :(

This has already been detailed in this blog post : http://anuragbhatia.com/networking/bsnl-softlayer-connectivity-problem-possible-fix/

And as the blogger said , its upto BSNL to correct the issue , which i think wont happen anytime soon.

Also from one of his tweet :

BSNL in #3 out of top 50 world most active AS'es. Keep on screwing up routing AS9829!

http://bgpupdates.potaroo.net/instability/bgpupd.html

With no other ISP in my place , and no other prvt players coming along the road in any time soon .. Dont know what else to do.

With more dwindling profits , BSNL is in precarious condition and letting it fail will eventually lead to more people being cut off from internet , letting it live will only deteriorate the already present horrible network. Right now in Catch 22 situation .

All i think we can do currently is keep lodging complaint after complaint . But the current mentality of BSNL personnel's is to run an OK network , irrespective of it performs.

Does it lag ? Do you have latency while gaming ? Not able to run a decent 240p youtube video ?

WE ARE LEAST BOTHERED !!

Tikona Broadband User Experiences

Posted: 13 Oct 2013 02:49 AM PDT

Thought I would start another thread for people who have actually used this service to describe their experience.

They have started advertising quite heavily in Bombay and their plans seem pretty decent. Their 600kbps UL plan would be excellent for me.

I really like the way they have bill limits for their limited plans as well. That shows they understand consumer concerns about enormous bills and have designed their plans to allay them.

So how good is their service? Any down time? How quickly do they respond to complaints? Really any information from people who have used Tikona would be appreciated.
