Tata Sky HD DTH: HD Channels now have ads Posted: 13 Apr 2012 12:53 PM PDT Quote: "If HD channels start airing commercials, then I want a reduction in my channel subscription," said Ashish Tiwari, a Mumbai resident. Ankul Barar, who lives in Delhi, said, "If broadcasters are going to air ads then, since we pay a premium on these channels, we may as well have just one ad break in one hour like when we go to watch a film in a cinema hall."Shailaja Bajpai in Bangalore is angry at the thought of ads interrupting her viewing on channels she pays more for. If we look up on technical side then we all know that larger bandwidth is required for broadcasting HD channel. Leaving aside the facilities required to broadcast HD content, the bandwidth required to transmit one HD channel is 4-5 times more than usual SD content. For broadcasting HD, additional equipment has to be installed. HD Technology & programming is very expensive. In fact the production companies have to replace or add most of their transmission & production chain. That means replacing cameras, vision mixers, monitors and VT machines with new, costly versions and installing fibre cable, servers and new routeing equipment. Production cinematic HD cameras cost way more. Filmmakers don't use SLR. And these cameras don't use triax cables like SD cameras do. The copper/fibre hybrid cables are about 10 times the cost of triax. For audio it's whole another story. Providing video feed with 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound takes more than a smile. There is much more cost involved in live production. How about better scenery, more intricate costumes, better-painted backgrounds etc? Imperfections such as nail holes, faded color on the walls will show up on HD. Even the makeup of actors need adjustments due to change in clarity & contrast. Average consumer is bound to overlook some of these factors. Then how about effing video & sound quality of HD channels? You pay for that. |
