The scheme for me was gonna get over on 21st Jan, and so I stopped using the network from 20th Jan 22:30 itself. I suggest you to be on the safer side and recharge again with Rs. 4500 and only then browse. Your balance may be deducted and you will have no right to complain.

I am not too sure if the device is a problem as I am on the same network and have the same device but don't see the problems he is facing. I would think it might have something to do with the contention in his area

Not bought anything personally from timtara, but people say its pathetic. They don't ship the products and getting a refund is an issue. Some people got their products delivered after 4-5 months, that too after threatening them with police action/court case, and repeatedly calling them.

Stay away from linksys/cisco WAG line of devices. Also have a look at buffalo and Asus routers.
And TP link routers are pretty nice from what I've seen.

3G data not valid in 2G network?

vodafone... you can use 3G data (costly) in 2g network but not vice versa
airtel...... you can use 2G data (cheaper) in 3g network and vice versa.... yes you read it correct.
