Night Ranger – Greatest Hits 1989

Featuring ex-Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Brad Gillis and former Montrose keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald, Night Ranger was one of the most popular mainstream hard rock bands of the mid-’80s. The group formed in the early ’80s in San Francisco; in addition to Gillis and Fitzgerald, the members included Jack Blades (vocals, bass), Jeff Watson (guitar), and Kelly Keagy (drums). After a few local gigs, promoter Bill Graham managed to get them supporting slots on Judas Priest, Santana, and Doobie Brothers concerts. Night Ranger’s first album, Dawn Patrol (1982), reached number 38 on the U.S. charts, yet it was 1983′s Midnight Madness that established the band as a commercial force. Featuring the AOR hit “(You Can Still) Rock in America” and the number five single “Sister Christian,” the record peaked at number 15 and sold over a million copies. 1985′s 7 Wishes was just as successful, reaching number ten on the charts. Night Ranger’s audience began to diminish after 1987′s Big Life. Fitzgerald left the following year and the band released their last album, Man in Motion, which failed to go gold or spawn any Top 40 singles. Night Ranger broke up the next year. Jack Blades joined the supergroup Damn Yankees, which also featured Ted Nugent and Tommy Shaw. A reunited Night Ranger returned in 1998 with Seven.

ABC News reports that expectant 19-year-old mother Mareena Silva of Ft. Lupon, Colo., was six weeks pregnant when she obtained a prescription for antibiotics to fight off an infection. In a harrowing turn of events, the pharmacist accidentally gave Silva methotrexate, a chemotherapy and rheumatoid arthritis drug that can act as an abortion pill. Now Silva may lose her baby.

Methotrexate and mistaken identity

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, methotrexate can harm a developing fetus. As an abortion pill, it can cause miscarriages and birth defects, frightening truths Silva had never contemplated.

"I am so worried about myself and the baby," Silva cried during an ABC News interview. "I just took one, but it was so much more of a big deal because I’m only six weeks along."

Dr. Paul Doering of the University of Florida’s College of Pharmacy told ABC News that few pharmacy mistakes could have been as dangerous. All it took was a careless mistake from a pharmacy technologist, who matched the methotrexate prescription with Mareena Silva’s last name. Unfortunately, the tech didn’t pay close enough attention to the similar but different first name on the bottle. The methotrexate was for another woman.

’50-50 chance’ of avoiding danger

Mareena Silva reportedly experienced nausea after a single pill. Her doctor advised her to induce vomiting immediately. Silva was then rushed to the hospital and administered charcoal to absorb the methotrexate.
