How to open file with .docx extension

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 12:39 PM PST

Yup. I have used Lotus Notes. It has issues in terms of speed & all. Not encountered too many bugs. But the slowness could be attributed to a few features which are not really needed by most but are forced upon. One feature I like is the way the attachments are not grouped at the top, but can be placed in different parts of the mail where relevant, similar to how we place links anywhere in the post rather than just at the top.

( I am not sure whether DD will show all the games of the world cup and I far as I know Star Cricket will show all the matches as the official broadcaster. Correct me if I am wrong.)

There is an ad coming on channel 100 of Tata Sky DTH that the above mentioned channels are available for Rs. 65 per month. But he is worried that once he adds these channels to watch world cup, he will have to keep them for a minimum of one year. Is that true? Can he subsribe to these sports channel only for the length of period he wants say 1 month, 2 months like that? Please help him....thanks

It will be good if u go for supreme sports pack. As sports channels are part of this BASE pack, it can be dropped any time. Also you will get all sports channels in very less price. If u go for optional pack, you cannot drop it before 90 days.

TechTalk: Mobile Call Charges May Go High

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 07:55 AM PST

Trivandrum: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), on Wednesday, has recommended a six-fold jump in 2G spectrum cost for operators. This is after the Comptroller and Auditor General's (CAG) findings that the exchequer has lost an estimated amount of Rs. 1.76 lakh crore in 2008 by selling 2G licenses bundled with start-up spectrum at Rs. 1,658 crore to pan-India operators.

The operators are currently paying Rs. 1,658 crore for the contracted 6.2 MHz spectrum for pan-India license but TRAI has come out with a new rate of Rs. 10,972.45 crore. Also, each MHz of additional spectrum held by operators should cost a one-time charge of Rs. 4,571.87 crore (all India). However, this would vary from circle to circle and operators would be required to pay only for those circles, where they hold extra spectrum. TRAI has also recommended that the suggested prices should be made effective from April 1, 2010.

This would mean that our mobile bills are going to multiply in the coming days. Imagine the call rates being Rs. 5 or Rs. 6 per minute, for local calls. That would be "disastrous", as the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the general body for GSM service providers, says.

"This would mean that my mobile charges are going to triple or even more. My father lives abroad and if the call charges are going to be hiked, all I can do is reduce my dependency on mobile phones and make use of cheaper internet based services like Skype or GTalk," says Arun Shajan, Quality Controller, Hilton Hyundai, Trivandrum.

"Also, in the long run, this is going to cause heavy loss for the government as more and more people would turn to the aforementioned services," he adds.

Major telecom operators like Bharti and Vodafone have raised their concern over the new recommendations by TRAI, terming them as "flawed, illogical and discriminatory" against the old operators. The COAI also commented that it is like "changing the goal post in the middle of the game."

However, the telecom operators in Trivandrum, when contacted chose not to comment on this. "I'm not aware of any such issues and as such I have not been intimated about any call charge hikes," says Jyothi Shankar, XX, BSNL, Trivandrum.

Telecom minister Kapil Sibal also criticised the CAG for the methodology used to arrive at the presumptive figures.

When I config ooma hub under PPPOE mode, ooma hub is unable to connect with connectivity under PPPOE mode.

Still finding solution for OOMA hub......

I would suspect that cloning the MAC ID was probably the thing that made the difference. In that case, there probably is some MAC binding going on. No, I don't care if they told you there isn't, the computer never lies, humans do.

The OOMA hub shouldn't need any PPPoE details to set up - it's a phone box, all you should do is configure your login name and password for the OOMA service. If the WBR1310 has more than one ethernet port, plug your PC in to one and the OOMA hub in to another (there's not much point in doing as WBR1310 >> OOMA >> PC unless the WBR1310 has only 1 ethernet port - in which case, it still should not require your PPPoE details).

Dammm they have changed their minds actually worried that big players will crush me in a short time + plus my less profit public benefit attitude .... now they want me to get into well settled family business. Its time to start convincing them.
(In background progress continues): The hardwares have been ordered. Ubiquiti products will be here by last week feb. The tower guy was good and suggested some alternative low cost tripole based installations. A couple of friends ready to trade roof space for free internet and yes in a written agreement. In total 3 access point on PTMP design will be installed.

Unable to connect Belkin Wi-Fi router (BSNL Broadband)

When connected this modem to the PC directly, it works perfectly and the connection speed is good.

However, I am unable to install my Belkin N-type router to work with this connection.

I made all the connections properly, and this is where it fails is: While setting-up the Belkin router using the CD given by Belkin for the first time, it asks for User Name and Password. My BSNL exchange person gave the user id that looks something like "ha44XXXXXXXX" where 'XXXX' is my landline phone number. The default password is "password". When I entered this user name and password during the Belkin set-up, it tries to contact the ISP and reverts with the message "Your ISP did not accept your user name and password". I have been trying this for several hours to no avail. I have even typed the password as "Password" just in case, but nothing has worked. I even tried calling the BSNL Call Centre and they confirmed that the user name & password that I am entering is correct. I suspect using the external router (Belkin) is not liked by BSNL. Should I buy one of those Type-2 from BSNL?

I am trying "Always ON" PPPoE connection. Settings in VPI/VCI are 0 and 35 respectively. My Belkin is a router-only, it doesn't have a modem inside.

I am entering User ID without @bsnl.in.

Please help me if any of you have faced this issue and how you got around it.

Thanks.

The option will be
Does your ISP need ID and pASSWORD TO LOG IN /
Select NO.
Since already entered in adsl modem and "Always On " mode.

SMPS fan, absolute necessity or BS

My SMPS fan conked out 5 days ago. Been running the PC 24/7 since then and still don't find signs any overheating or loss of performance. Of course, i have only one hard disk, and no external video or sound cards or any other major power hogs. So i was wondering if these guys who exhibit symptoms of a cardiac arrest, and advise immediate shutdown in such a scenario, really just alarmists.

Hi,

On my Fedora Linux pc the image files (all types jpeg, gif etc) are no longer showing their pictures. What I mean to say here the images are easily opened in a number of apps such as the GIMP, Image Viewer etc. But since all the images are stored in different folders and displayed as icons in terms of file arrangement. The file arrangement I have chosen is called Icon View in the Konqueror browser. My worry is why all the image files are shown as a picture of a digital camera instead of showing them as small pictures (the content of the image file itself). Please help thanks...

Can any one please tell me how to upload a screen shot here with this post?

no need for them if u get a media streamer like Popcorn,Iomega etc and directly send it to ur tv . Also if u d/l 1080/720 BRRips of movies and 720p of HDTV it makes no sense to turn them in DVD format other than to just stream it to ur Tv if u dont have a large monitor.

oops forgot to add that the codec provided by nero (vision) is the best so far when it comes to video rendering and the fastest by Ulead Video Studio.

I have never used director b4 but the new features looks nice. I am more of an Avid products user apart from Premiere

Usually a merc costs more than an LEXUS, bcause their maintainence costs is high, their purchase costs itself is more than LEXUS, and LEXUS being the part of TOYOTA, still isn't available OFFICIALLY in the INDIAN market.

Also LEXUS has more reliable than a merc, bmw etc, and also the best part is SO quite even at the speeds of 140 KM/hr.

I have had a ride in LEXUS (1 st pic above), was so comfy and quite, and SUPER MARK LEVINSON audio systems were adorable.

This HAPPY journey in LEXUS(actually a TAXI) was when my DAD and me were going to the DXB airport for the flight 2 MUMBAI.

So can u imagine in ABROAD like in UAE, some luxurious TAXI's are also available, unlike here in INDIA just stuck with those TATA's and other SHIT like M RENAULT.

not getting best speeds [UMG 1831 + bsnl 3g]

Posted: 13 Feb 2011 08:20 PM PST

after going through the amazing speeds posted by users of bsnl 3g and umg 1831 users, i myself bought one.
earlier my dad had a micromax datacard(the 3.6 mbps that came with bsnl 3g). using that i had seen speeds of 250kBps+ in IDM. so i assumed, that probably using umg 1831 would result in increased speeds.
But as it turns out, there is no difference. I am here in bhubaneswar, orissa. all the settings are basically the ones used to get connected.

Here i am posting a mdma and idm screenshot together.
Please help me out guys if by any tweaking in setting(or something that i may have missed out) i can get better speeds.
Moreover what exactly is negotiated Qos in mdma ?

Movies now HD channel Added on Dishtv

Posted: 13 Feb 2011 01:23 PM PST

Movies Now has started showing a Irritating Scrolling message, " This is a free preview..."

If you guys are going to charge for each HD channel separately, i think that's the worst thing you could do as we the HD users already pay Rs.100 for the 4-5 channels and now
asking more $$ would just be beyond acceptable level for me as a subscriber.

Lastly i don't see any difference in Zee TV on channel 100 and ZeeTV HD, so I assume this is just a way of making fool of HD Subscribers that its HD and included in price.

Airtel Broadband love story ended due to fair usage policy...

Now they also have a software running called VPA or something which is responsible for throttling your speeds once you reach your Fair Usage Policy limit. Now this software is supposed to reset your speeds to your plan speeds at the beginning of the billing cycle that is if you have been throttled as per Fair Usage Policy already.

Now the problem is that their VPA software is still running on the old billing cycle whereas the customers are expecting their speeds to get normal as per the new billing cycle. The result - pretty much a meltdown happening at Airtel call centers right now.

All of this is something I learnt in the last 60 mins of agonising and plain BP-raising 5 phone calls to the customer care department speaking to 6 different people all giving me weird answers till one of the tech team people gave me the answer above which made some sense. Not to mention I was put on hold for 10 mins and hung up on - 3 times!

Background of the story - you gotta hang on here, the story might be a bit long:
I became an Airtel customer back in March 2010 when they didn't have clearly called out Fair Usage Policy limits - I got myself the 512k day/1 Mbps night plan. After a couple of months they introduced Fair Usage Policy throttling which I noticed with a reduction in speed, and in my case it was after reaching 100GB a month. The limit was also confirmed with someone from customer care at that time. Also, at some point in Oct/Nov - they made my plan 1 Mbps full day with no change in Fair Usage Policy or prices - atleast I wasn't told of Fair Usage Policy limits but this is where it get's murkier and more rotten - read on.

In October 2010, I noticed that I was being throttled much earlier in the month. So I called up customer care and complained because they told me my limit is still at 100 GB. I logged a ticket and their new local "good-for-nothing-ticket-bounty-hunters" called me and said that this is because I have reached my download limit of 25 GB. I said CC told me 100 and u tell me 25 - I want to believe CC. They gave me the mobile number of a senior person Mr Mehta (PM me for full name and mobile no.) as a senior CC person and they asked me to check with him. He said that Airtel has 2-3 diff software that their diff departments look at and they have diff Fair Usage Policy in diff software for me. But he also said that my Fair Usage Policy limit is 100 GB. By this time I reached the beginning of the next billing cycle and the speeds were reset and I said I will get this checked again when I reach the cap.

Now come December, my speed was cut to half as soon as I hit 25GB. By now this is another stress factor in my life which I have to manage like my job, my health, my investments etc :) So I know the drill - I call up CC to ask a simple question "What is my Fair Usage Policy limit and what will happen if I reach this limit?". Now on purpose I made a diff call to the CC 3 diff days to ask the same question because I knew with experience that the answer everytime is going to be different - and it was. One version was that my speed would get reduced to 512kbps (but no further reduction even if I hit 200GB) and the other version was that my speed would get reduced to 256kbps - all from the same CC department. What I observed in my speed however was this: after 25GB, I was reduced to 512kbps and now for the last 3-4 days, my speed has reduced to 256 kbps - possibly because I hit another speed limit or something.

Now before I go ahead, here is my definition of the term "fact": A fact is a piece of information that you believe is true because either you have experienced it yourself or it has been validated by certain rules or people that you believe in. For example - if I come across a ghost tomorrow, I would say ghosts are real - even if people call me crazy - because this is something I have experienced and I trust my senses. Similarly, water is H2O because my belief in science and it's rules makes me agree to it.

Now the above were facts and I have the complaint numbers and names of people saved to prove it, here is my opinion which by the way have turned very real facts for me:
- Airtel customer care has gone to the dogs - my recent experiences with them make me believe that they are one of the bottom 5 quality of CC in my whole life of experiencing customer care in everywhere I have lived in the world - UK, US, Singapore and Dubai
  • Their Fair Usage Policy as an idea was a disaster against everything that the India growth story has to offer, it's execution was an even worse disastor, cataclysmic for me and this would scar their brand for a long time to come
  • They simply DO NOT care about their customers - not a single CC or "Senior" person I spoke to was even remotely interested in solving my problems instead sending me to departments after departments to just rid their hands of any problem
  • Airtel des not care about your contractual terms with them - What we call a plan is basically a contract I entered into with Airtel. Airtel changed the terms of this contract without even a formal notification to me leaving me to find out myself when I start seeing a degradation in quality that I was not expecting to see. They did this because they have a line in the contract - something like "Airtel reserves the right to change it's plans blah blah". This is written to protect and not to abuse - rarely is this line used as a practice and Airtel is abusing this blatantly and without any regrets in an almost peadophilic way. Airtel: might I remind you as a business person - there are the words of a contract and there is a spirit of the contract. The trust goes away as soon as the spirit of the contract goes away - Business 101 motherfu**ers!
  • Airtel is completely out of tune with the demands of internet usage of current times - they think a 25GB cap is required for a 4Mbps connection in today's world of streaming FU*KING LEGAL HD content available all around the web - both paid and free - YouTube HD, TED HD - install Miro and your list is endless. Sorry I had to shout out the curse words there because I am genuinely sick and at times nauseated of Airtel treating us all like pirates just because we can reap the promise of the internet to it's full free collaborative glory born on the principles of sharing and bringing the whole world to the same level in terms of availability of content - from Minnesota to Mogadishu!

I had to write this to share (and vent) my frustration with a community who is also going through hell like this every day dealing with Airtel. Some of us are geeks and we ask questions to demand what we rightfully believe is ours - because Airtel and the trust led us to believe so.

For people who are not on the Airtel Broadband yet - I very sincerely and strongly urge you to read the above in full and then make a conscious decision about your broadband provider. After all, in such cases we have to believe that we vote with our wallets - so choose wisely who gets your vote.

If people have similar experiences with Airtel, I urge you to write in detail on this forum.

About the sad ending - I am working on it including the number portability of my Airtel mobile to another provider so I can remove Airtel from my life.

Similar thing happend with me too and I am going to really dump Airtel for good.
Any suggestions for unlimited plans in south delhi .. mtnl / spectranet / reliance
